BODY CODE DESIGNATION
DESCRIPTION
The generator consists of an internal fan and an internal electronic Integrated Circuit (IC) voltage regulator. Voltage regulator is part of the rotor, brush and brush holder assembly.
Alternating current produced is rectified to direct current through diodes. A charging system warning light is used to indicate charging system malfunction. If there is an interruption in the charging system warning light circuit, the generator relay or Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay functions as a back-up for electrical flow from ignition switch. Warning light circuit energizes field coil of generator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
OPERATION
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM), maintains a system charging voltage of approximately 13-15 volts. PCM determines a target voltage based on inputs from battery temperature sensor (ambient temperature). PCM compares target and battery voltages whenever engine is running. If battery voltage is less than target voltage, PCM will provide more field current. If battery voltage is greater than target voltage, PCM will provide less field current.
