INTRODUCTION

If no faults were found while performing BASIC TESTING , proceed with ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS in this article. If no fault codes or only pass codes are present, proceed to H - TESTING W/O CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e. ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.).

VEHICLE BODY IDENTIFICATION

The self-diagnostic capabilities of this system, if properly utilized, can simplify testing. The Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) monitors several different engine control system circuits.

If a problem is sensed with a monitored circuit, a fault code is stored in the SBEC, the check engine light illuminates and SBEC enters limp-in mode. In limp-in mode, SBEC compensates for component failure by substituting information from other sources. This allows vehicle operation until repairs can be made.

Once codes are known, refer to FAULT CODES listed in this article to determine the questionable circuit. Test circuits and repair or replace components as required. If problem is repaired or ceases to exist, the SBEC cancels that fault code after 50 ignition on/off cycles. To clear codes, refer to CLEARING CODES in this article.

A specific fault code results from a particular system failure. It is NOT necessarily the reason for that failure. The fault code does not condemn a specific component. The fault code calls out a probable malfunction area.

HARD FAILURES

Hard failures cause check engine light to illuminate and remain on until the malfunction is repaired. If light comes on and remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, cause of malfunction must be determined using diagnostic (code) charts. If a sensor fails, SBEC will use a substitute value in its calculations, allowing engine operation in limp-in mode. In this condition, vehicle will run but driveability may be poor.

INTERMITTENT FAILURES

Intermittent failures may cause malfunction light to flicker or stay on until the intermittent fault goes away. The corresponding trouble code, however, will be retained in SBEC memory. If related fault does not reoccur within a certain time frame, related trouble code will be erased from SBEC memory. Intermittent failures can be caused by faulty sensor, bad connector or other wiring-related problems. See INTERMITTENTS in H - TESTING W/O CODES article.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Refer to ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS to retrieve fault codes. If fault codes are NOT present and/or DRB-II (Diagnostic Readout Box-II) is used, proceed to one of the following tests

  1. Go to NO START TEST 1 (NS-1) chart if a no-start condition exists or engine stalls after start-up. Perform indicated VERIFICATION PROCEDURE chart after repairs. Ensure charts apply to engine being tested.
  2. Go to DRIVEABILITY TEST 1 (DR-1) chart if engine runs but has performance problems. Perform indicated VERIFICATION PROCEDURE chart after repairs. Ensure charts apply to engine being tested.

Note. When using trouble shooting charts for diagnosis, DO NOT skip any steps in chart or incorrect diagnosis may result.

Before proceeding with diagnosis, the following precautions must be followed

  1. Vehicle must have a fully charged battery and functional charging system.
  2. Probe SBEC connector from pin side. DO NOT backprobe SBEC connector.
  3. DO NOT cause short circuits when performing electrical tests. This will set additional fault codes, making diagnosis of original problem more difficult.
  4. DO NOT use a test light in place of a voltmeter.
  5. When checking for spark, ensure coil wire is NO more than 1/4" from ground. If coil wire is more than 1/4" from ground, damage to vehicle electronics and/or SBEC may result.
  6. DO NOT prolong testing of fuel injectors or engine may hydrostatically (liquid) lock.
  7. Always repair lowest fault code number (check engine light) or first fault displayed (DRB-II) first.
  8. Always perform verification test after repairs are made.

Note. Manufacturer recommends using DRB-II (Diagnostic Readout Box-II, C-4805) to diagnose the system. Check engine light function has limited diagnostic usage.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOSTIC MODE

  1. Start engine (if possible). Move transmission shift lever through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on, then off (if equipped).
  2. Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn ignition on, off, on, off and on. Record 2-digit fault codes as displayed by flashing check engine light.
  3. For example, Code 23 is displayed as flash, flash, 4-second pause, flash, flash, flash. After a slightly longer pause, other codes stored are displayed in numerical order.
  4. Once check engine light begins to flash fault codes, it cannot be stopped. If you loose count, it will be necessary to start over. Code 55 indicates end of fault code display.
  5. Refer to FAULT CODES table to translate trouble code number to a system fault description (DRB-II display). Once trouble area is identified, refer to NO START TEST 1 (NS-1) or DRIVEABILITY TEST 1 (DR-1) trouble shooting chart to diagnose problem. Use trouble shooting chart titles to find appropriate chart.
  6. As an example, a 3.0L engine starts and runs, but has a driveability problem. Check engine light indicates a Code 14. Refer to FAULT CODES table to translate trouble code number to a system fault description (DRB-II display).
  7. When system fault description (DRB-II display) is obtained, refer to DRIVEABILITY TEST 1 (DR-1) since vehicle has a driveability problem. Follow DR-1 chart until it leads you to a diamond box that asks: IS FAULT MAP VOLTAGE TOO LOW? This box will refer you to DR-4 for diagnosis.

DRB-II DIAGNOSTIC MODE

  1. Turn ignition off. Attach DRB-II Tester (C-4805) to self-test connector. Connector is located in engine compartment near left shock tower.
  2. Start engine (if possible). With foot on brake, move transmission shift lever through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on, then off (if equipped).
  3. Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn ignition on. Enter vehicle model year and engine size. Read fault data on DRB-II. Refer to NO START TEST 1 (NS-1) or DRIVEABILITY TEST 1 (DR-1) for your engine.

Note. Actuator, sensor, solenoid and switch tests available on DRB-II will vary depending on engine, transaxle and emission packages.

START COUNTER

  1. A start counter will appear along with fault displayed on DRB-II. As an example, DRB-II will display 0 SINCE THIS FAULT. The start counter shows how many engine starts have occurred since last fault was stored.
  2. This helps determine if fault is intermittent. Memory space limits start counter to first 3 faults. If more than 3 faults are stored, start counter will display third fault with a 3 +.

FAULT COUNTER

  1. A fault counter will appear along with fault displayed on DRB-II. As an example, DRB-II will display #1 OF 2 FAULTS. SBEC will store up to 8 fault messages. Faults are numbered in reverse order of setting.
  2. The most recent fault to occur will be number one. Vehicles without air conditioning will always have A/C CLUTCH RELAY CKT (circuit) stored in memory. This fault will always be number one if vehicle is not equipped with that option.
  3. If no fault messages are stored, DRB-II will display NO FAULTS with start run counter reading SINCE LAST ERASED. When no faults are stored, counter will reach a maximum of 255.

DRB-II SWITCH TEST MODE

The SBEC can only recognize high and low states on switch circuits. SBEC cannot tell the difference between an open or short circuit or a defective switch. The DRB-II display must change between INPUT HIGH and INPUT LOW.

DRB-II READ INPUT STATES

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to read input states of Z1 voltage sense, park/neutral switch, brake switch, A/C switch, speed control resume, on/off and set switches. DRB-II will display INPUT HIGH and INPUT LOW as SBEC senses component status changing.

DRB-II READ OUTPUT STATES

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to read output states of speed control vacuum solenoid, purge solenoid, A/C clutch relay, radiator fan relay, ASD relay, check engine light, speed control vent solenoid and EGR solenoid. DRB-II will display ENERGIZED or DE-ENERGIZED as SBEC senses component status changing.

DRB-II ACTUATES SOLENOIDS & RELAYS

This state on DRB-II allows SBEC to actuate radiator fan relay, A/C clutch relay, ASD relay, purge solenoid, speed control servo solenoids and EGR solenoid. With tester in this state, SBEC can also actuate all solenoids and relays simultaneously. This test allows technician to observe components in operation.

DRB-II ACTUATES OUTPUTS

This mode on DRB-II allows SBEC to actuate ignition coil, fuel injectors (#1), fuel injectors (#2), fuel injectors (#3), AIS motor open and close, alternator field, tachometer output and fuel monitor signal. During this test DRB-II will read ACTUATING.

DRB-II READ SENSOR VOLTAGES

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to read battery temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, coolant temperature sensor, TPS sensor, minimum throttle in volts, knock sensor, battery voltage and MAP sensor.

DRB-II READ SENSOR VALUES

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to read coolant temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or Centigrade, manifold pressure in inches of vacuum or kilopascals, AIS motor in steps, adaptive fuel factor in percent, barometric pressure in inches of mercury or kilopascals, engine speed in RPM, SBEC spark advance in degrees, vehicle speed given in MPH and oxygen sensor state given as center, rich or lean.

DRB-II ENGINE PARAMETERS

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to read engine RPM, total spark advance, MAP reading, barometric pressure, AIS motor, battery voltage and adaptive fuel factor.

DRB-II SET ENGINE RPM

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to set engine RPM at a fixed speed from 900-2000 in 100 RPM increments. This allows for accuracy of AIS motor control to be checked.

DRB-II EMISSIONS EMR TESTS

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to reset emission reminder light and mileage. This is only used on trucks.

DRB-II READ MODULE INFORMATION

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to read SBEC part number and application.

DRB-II SYSTEM MONITORS

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to read fuel control monitor, charging monitor, RPM monitor, speed control status, engine knock retard, boost monitor, secondary indicators, adaptive fuel factor, theft alarm status and DIS signal status.

DRB-II SPECIAL FUNCTIONS

This mode on DRB-II allows technician to actuate ASD fuel system test, minimum airflow idle speed and reset memory. When reset memory is selected, adaptive fuel, AIS counter, minimum throttle, erase fault data and reset all values can be selected.

BLANK MESSAGE SCREEN

  1. Connect DRB-II to a different vehicle. If message screen is still blank, DRB-II or cable adapter are faulty. Substitute to find faulty component. If message screen is not blank, DRB-II and cable adapter are functioning properly.
  2. Inspect diagnostic connector for proper wire placement, damaged terminals or pushed out pins. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, using an ohmmeter, check Black/White ground wire of diagnostic connector for continuity to ground. Repair as necessary.

NO RESPONSE MESSAGE

  1. Ensure ignition is turned on. Disconnect SBEC 60-pin connector. Using an ohmmeter, check Pink wire of diagnostic connector for continuity to SBEC 60-pin connector cavity No. 25. (Scheme 7)through see scheme 10.
  2. Check Light Green wire of diagnostic connector for continuity to SBEC 60-pin connector cavity No. 45. (Scheme 7)through see scheme 10. If continuity is not present, repair circuit as necessary. If continuity is present, replace SBEC. Attempt retest. RAM TEST FAILURE Message - Replace DRB-II. CARTRIDGE ERROR Message - Replace DRB-II cartridge. KEY PAD TEST FAILURE Message - Power up DRB-II again with fingers off the keypad. If error message returns, replace DRB-II. HIGH OR LOW BATTERY Message - Correct condition of vehicle battery and reconnect DRB-II.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION (TURBO)

EMISSION MAINTENANCE REMINDER (EMR) MILEAGE TRANSFER

Note. EMR information applies only to trucks, but will be referred to in flow charts.

  1. When SBEC is replaced, vehicle mileage must be copied from odometer to a replacement SBEC memory. Transfer of vehicle mileage will enable new SBEC to operate EMR light properly.
  2. Using DRB-II (C-4805), enter EMISSIONS EMR TESTS. Press YES key. Select test item EMR MEMORY CHECK. Press YES key. DRB-II will read EMR MEMORY CHECK ARE YOU SURE? YES, NO. Press YES key.
  3. DRB-II will display IS INSTRUMENT PANEL MILEAGE BETWEEN 9953 AND 10051? If vehicle mileage is within specification, EMR memory check is complete. Press YES key. If vehicle mileage is not within specification, go to next step.
  4. Press NO key. DRB-II will display DO YOU WANT TO CORRECT EMR MILEAGE? Press YES key. DRB-II will display ENTER MILEAGE SHOWN ON INSTRUMENT PANEL USE ENTER KEY TO END.
  5. Enter vehicle mileage. DO NOT enter tenths. When correct vehicle mileage is entered, press ENTER key. DRB-II will ask for verification of mileage entry. If mileage entry was accurate, press ENTER key. DRB-II will display EMR MEMORY CHECK TEST COMPLETE. Vehicle must travel at least 8 miles for reset to occur.

EMISSION MAINTENANCE REMINDER (EMR) LIGHT RESET PROCEDURE

Note. EMR information applies only to trucks, but will be referred to in flow charts.

  1. The Emission Maintenance Reminder (EMR) light is designed to be a reminder to service the vehicle emissions control system. It is not an emissions warning system, only a reminder to perform emissions servicing.
  2. The components to be serviced include PCV valve, oxygen sensor and some vacuum-operated components. EMR light will illuminate after a predetermined mileage.
  3. Using DRB-II, select EMISSIONS EMR TESTS. Select EMR MEMORY CHECK. Press F1 or F2 key on DRB-II until display reads RESET EMR LIGHT. Press YES key.
  4. Display will read RESET EMR LIGHT ARE YOUR SURE? YES, NO. Press YES key. When DRB-II is finished resetting, EMR light display will read EMR LIGHT RESET.

CLEARING CODES

Using DRB-II, select test ERASE FAULT DATA. Press YES key on DRB-II. DRB-II will display ARE YOU SURE? YES, NO. Press YES key on tester. Tester will display ERASING FAULT DATA X. When DRB-II is finished erasing fault codes, it will display FAULT DATA ERASED.

If DRB-II is not available, fault codes may be cleared by disconnecting negative battery cable for at least 15 seconds, allowing SBEC to clear fault codes.

VEHICLE SECURITY SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS

  1. Cycle ignition switch to ACCESSORY position 3 times, leaving ignition in ACCESSORY position. Security system is now in diagnostic mode. Park lights and taillights will flash verifying their operation. The horn will sound twice verifying trunk key cylinder is in proper position.
  2. Return ignition switch to OFF position. Turning ignition off will stop lights from flashing, but keep security system in diagnostic mode. With security system in diagnostic mode, vehicle horn will sound when switches are activated, verifying proper operation of switches.
  3. Begin diagnosis with all doors, hood and trunk closed. Open and close each door with a one-second delay between opening and closing. Vehicle horn will sound when door switch opens and when door switch closes.
  4. Open and close hood. Vehicle horn will sound when hood switch opens and when switch closes. Activate power door locks. Vehicle horn will sound when door locks are activated in LOCK position and again when door locks are activated to UNLOCK position.
  5. Using door key, lock and unlock vehicle doors with a one-second delay between locking and unlocking. Vehicle horn will sound when switch is locked and when switch is unlocked.
  6. Cycle ignition switch to RUN position. Vehicle horn will sound once, indicating ignition input is operating properly. Cycling ignition switch to RUN position will also take security system out of diagnostic mode.
  7. If horn does NOT sound during testing, this indicates no input from switch, faulty wiring or defective security system module. Security system module is located above glove box. If SBEC has been replaced recently, vehicle security system will not function until 20 engine cranks have occurred.

SUMMARY
