DESCRIPTION

The power side mirrors are controlled by a single switch assembly located on either the driver's door panel or center console. All vehicles except "G" and "J" bodies are equipped with an ignition-off draw connector, which helps prevent battery discharge during storage. This connector is included in power mirror circuitry and should be checked if mirrors are inoperative.

OPERATION

There are 3 types of mirror adjuster switches used. Type I uses a left-to-right rocker switch for mirror selection and 4 buttons for mirror movement. Type II uses a rotary switch, which is turned clockwise for right-side mirror and counterclockwise for left mirror and can be moved UP, DOWN, LEFT or RIGHT for mirror direction. Type III has a paddle switch for mirror selection located centrally among the four movement buttons. (Scheme 1) The power mirror motors are integral in mirror assembly and cannot be replaced separately.

MIRROR MOTOR TEST

  1. Remove power mirror switch from mounting position. Disconnect wiring harness at switch connector.
  2. Disconnect switch wiring harness at connector. In the case of memory mirrors (Green 8-pin mirror connector and memory switch in driver's door panel), the switch wiring disconnects from the cowl top harness rather than the mirror harness.
  3. Using 2 jumper wires, one connected to a 12-volt source and the other to a good vehicle ground, refer to the appropriate «MIRROR MOTOR TEST CHARTS»(/dodge/shadow/i-1986-1994/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power__mirror-motor-test-charts) for wire hook-ups at the wiring harness (harness side, not switch side). If 2 wire codes are indicated in the "12 volts" column, both wires must be hooked up to 12 volts simultaneously for test to work. 4) If results shown in chart are NOT obtained, check circuit for broken or shorted wire. If wiring is okay, replace mirror assembly as required.

MIRROR SWITCH TEST

  1. Remove the power mirror switch from its mounting position. Disconnect the switch from the wiring harness. Move mirror adjuster switch to either left or right position as indicated in the appropriate «MIRROR SWITCH CONTINUITY CHARTS»(/dodge/shadow/i-1986-1994/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power__mirror-switch-continuity-charts) .
  2. Using a continuity tester or an ohmmeter, test for continuity between the switch terminals as shown in the appropriate «MIRROR SWITCH CONTINUITY CHARTS»(/dodge/shadow/i-1986-1994/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power__mirror-switch-continuity-charts) . If results shown in the chart are not obtained, replace the switch.
