INTRODUCTION

Note. Introduction information not applicable.

ENGINE COMPRESSION

Check compression pressure with engine at normal operating temperature, all spark plugs removed, ignition system disabled and throttle valves wide open. Crank engine until maximum reading is indicated on gauge. Compression should not be less than 100 psi (7 kg/cm 2 ). Variation between cylinders should not be greater than 25 percent.

ApplicationPsi (kg/cm 2 )
2.2L & 2.5L TBI, 2.2L Turbo, 2.5L Turbo & 3.3L(1) 100 (7)
3.0L178 (12.5)

VALVE CLEARANCE

Note. All engines use hydraulic lifters. No adjustments are required.

IGNITION TIMING (4-CYL & 3.0L)

CAUTIONTiming light secondary connection should be made with inductive pick-up. DO NOT puncture cables, boots or nipples with test probes.
  1. Place gear selector in Neutral. Turn off all lights and accessories. If magnetic probe timing light is being used, refer to equipment manufacturer's instructions for service procedure. If conventional timing light is used, connect timing light to No. 1 cylinder.
  2. Start engine and warm to normal temperature. Connect tachometer to engine and ensure idle RPM is to specification. Disconnect engine coolant sensor lead wire. CHECK ENGINE light should illuminate.
  3. Check timing through timing window in bellhousing on 4-cylinder models or on crankshaft pulley for 3.0L. If timing is within 2 degrees of specification, do not adjust. If timing is incorrect, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and turn housing until specified timing is obtained.
  4. Recheck timing after distributor hold-down bolt has been tightened. Reconnect coolant lead wire. Erase any fault codes. Recheck curb idle and adjust (if necessary). Remove diagnostic equipment.

IGNITION TIMING (3.3L)

Note. Basic timing is fixed and has no means of adjustment.

IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE

Note. Idle mixture is controlled by SBEC. No adjustment is possible.

Electronically fuel injected vehicles use an Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) motor to regulate idle RPM. The AIS is controlled by the Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) which uses information received from various sensors to determine, among other things, idle speed. Curb idle speed is not adjustable. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES article for diagnosis of incorrect idle speed.

MINIMUM AIRFLOW (2.2L & 2.5L TBI)

  1. Connect DRB-II to vehicle. Disconnect and plug heated air door vacuum hose. Ensure engine is at operating temperature.
  2. Connect timing light and tachometer. Turn engine off. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor. Disconnect PCV hose from intake manifold.
  3. Attach Orifice (6457) to manifold. Orifice size is .125" (3 mm). Start engine. Ensure ignition timing is to specification. Let engine idle for at least one minute.
  4. Using DRB-II, access MINIMUM AIRFLOW IDLE SPEED. When this mode is accessed, AIS motor will fully close, spark advance will be fixed and fuel delivery will not change.
  5. Check minimum airflow. See «MINIMUM AIRFLOW»(/dodge/shadow/i-1986-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) . If minimum airflow is not to specification, replace throttle body. Disconnect all test equipment.

MINIMUM AIRFLOW (2.2L TURBO & 2.5L TURBO)

  1. Connect DRB-II to vehicle. Ensure engine is at operating temperature.
  2. Connect timing light and tachometer. Turn engine off. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor. Disconnect PCV hose from intake manifold.
  3. Plug PCV nipple on manifold.

MINIMUM AIRFLOW (3.0L)

  1. Connect DRB-II to vehicle. Ensure engine is at operating temperature.
  2. Connect timing light and tachometer. Turn engine off. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor. Disconnect PCV hose from PCV valve.
  3. Plug PCV valve nipple. Disconnect idle purge hose at tee fitting. (Scheme 1) Attach Orifice (6457) to intake purge hose. Orifice size is.125" (3 mm).
  4. Start engine. Ensure ignition timing is to specification. Let engine idle for at least one minute.
  5. Using DRB-II, access MINIMUM AIRFLOW IDLE SPEED. When this mode is accessed, AIS motor will fully close, spark advance will be fixed and fuel delivery will not change.
  6. Check minimum airflow. See «MINIMUM AIRFLOW»(/dodge/shadow/i-1986-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments). If minimum airflow is not to specification, replace throttle body. Disconnect all test equipment.
