SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
PRETEST INSPECTION
Before proceeding with diagnosis, the following precautions must be followed
- Vehicle must have a fully charged battery and functional charging system.
- Always start at SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A: IDENTIFYING VEHICLE EQUIPMENT & SYSTEM PROBLEMS. Starting with any other test may result in incorrect results.
- Only perform test steps indicated. It is NOT necessary to perform all steps in a test.
- VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article should only be used when instructed to do so by another test. Always start at SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A: IDENTIFYING VEHICLE EQUIPMENT & SYSTEM PROBLEMS.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position before disconnecting or connecting components.
- Use extreme care when connecting or disconnecting wiring during testing to prevent accidental grounding or shorting.
- DO NOT use a test light in place of a voltmeter.
- Always disconnect scan tool after use.
- Always disconnect scan tool before charging battery.
- Always perform appropriate verification test after repairs are made.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
Note. Before proceeding with diagnosis, certain precautions must be followed. See PRETEST INSPECTION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
Diagnostic test procedures are designed to detect system faults as quickly as possible. Body Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are accessed through Data Link Connector (DLC). Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB) scan tool or generic scan tool, is used to access information from DLC.
A 1999 diagnostic program cartridge (if applicable), scan tool, body diagnostics cable, hand-held oil pressure gauge, jumper wires, and digital volt-ohmmeter will be needed for testing. Proceed to SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A: IDENTIFYING VEHICLE EQUIPMENT & SYSTEM PROBLEMS in appropriate BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS article.
GENERIC SCAN TOOL
Self-diagnostic tests are written specifically for Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB) scan tool. A generic scan tool can be used, but may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions.
DRB SCAN TOOL
Refer to DRB scan tool instructions to retrieve and clear fault messages, and when performing other scan tool function.
DRB scan tool is grounded through DLC connector. Only one volt/ohmmeter test lead is required when instructed by testing to measure voltage or resistance on specified circuit. DRB scan tool volt/ohmmeter mode should only be used when body control computer tests require the use of this option.
