REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONFasteners originally used for air bag components are specifically designed for air bag system. DO NOT replace with substitutes. Use only vehicle manufacturer replacement fasteners for air bag components.

Removal

  1. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-91316-S18411489132001030700000) . Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected from stud on strut tower and isolated from all other components.
  2. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Lock steering column by turning steering wheel 180 degrees clockwise from straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove ignition key from lock cylinder. Remove speed control switches and connectors.
  3. On models with cruise control, remove both cruise control switches from steering wheel by removing screws from side of switch, then rocking switch away from airbag and steering wheel. Disconnect connectors. Air bag module bolts will be accessible. On models without cruise control, remove both covers from sides of steering wheel by prying covers from steering wheel, to gain access to air bag module bolts.
  4. On all models, remove 2 air bag module-to-steering wheel bolts. Lift air bag module from steering wheel. Disconnect wiring harness from rear of air bag module. Remove air bag module from steering wheel. Place air bag module onto bench with trim cover facing upward away from bench surface.
  5. If optional audio control switches are present on rear of steering wheel, disconnect 4-pin connector between clockspring and steering wheel wiring harness.
  6. Remove steering wheel retaining nut. Using puller, remove steering wheel.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use steering wheel retaining nut to install steering wheel. DO NOT hammer on steering column shaft when installing steering wheel.
  2. Use care when installing air bag module onto steering wheel, as not to pinch wires of air bag module harness. Tighten steering wheel retaining nut and air bag module-to-steering wheel bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-91316-S06384881422001030700000) .
