SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
- Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable from stud on strut tower before attempting any repairs to steering column components. Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnecting negative battery cable before working on vehicle.
- Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. Failure to disable air bag system may result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-91316-S18411489132001030700000) .
- After repairs, turn ignition on from passenger's side of vehicle in case of accidental air bag deployment.
- When placing a live air bag module on a work bench or other surface, always face air bag module and trim cover upward, away from surface. This will reduce motion of air bag module if accidentally deployed.
- After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which irritates skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves, long-sleeved shirt during cleanup. Wash hands with mild soap and water.
- Electrical sources should never be allowed near connector on back of air bag module.
- Always use factory type installed fasteners when installing air bag system components, as components contain a special coating designed for air bag system.
- Clockspring must be replaced whenever driver's side air bag has been deployed.
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
- To disable air bag system, ensure ignition is off. Disconnect negative battery cable from stud on strut tower. Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnecting negative battery cable before working on vehicle, as reserve capacitor in air bag system must be fully discharged.
- To activate air bag system, reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Observe operation of AIR BAG warning light on instrument panel.
- AIR BAG warning light should come on for 10 seconds and then go off. If AIR BAG warning light fails to come on, or remains on for more than 10 seconds, a problem exists in air bag system. System should be checked. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
CLOCKSPRING CENTERING
| CAUTION | Following clockspring centering procedure must be performed if in doubt as to whether clockspring is centered properly. If clockspring is not centered properly, air bag electrical circuit could be disrupted. |
Note. If clockspring centering is performed with steering wheel already removed, go to step 4 .
- Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-91316-S36003567142001030700000). Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-91316-S18411489132001030700000).
- Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Lock steering column by turning steering wheel 180 degrees clockwise from straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove key.
- Remove air bag module and steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-91316-S10727650642001030700000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Depress plastic lock pin to disengage clockspring locking mechanism.
- With locking mechanism disengaged, rotate clockspring rotor clockwise to end of travel. DO NOT apply excessive torque.
- From end of clockwise travel, slowly rotate clockspring counterclockwise until Yellow appears in clockspring centering window. see scheme 3 Arrow on clockspring will be pointing at drive pin on clockspring rotor when clockspring is centered.
Column Shift
If shift interlock does not operate properly on column shift models, shift interlock cassette on steering column must be replaced. Shift interlock cable may only be adjusted once after installing NEW shift interlock cassette on steering column. See LOCK CYLINDER & SHIFT INTERLOCK CASSETTE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
Floor Shift
- Remove shifter handle. Remove console bezel. Move gear shift lever to Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position.
- If interlock cable is being replaced, remove pin to allow cable to self adjust. Press locking clip to secure adjustment. If interlock cable is not being replaced, pin will not exist. Loosen locking clip on interlock cable to allow cable to self adjust. Press locking clip to secure adjustment.
- Install bezel on shifter console. Install shifter handle.

Column Shift Models
- If shift interlock does not operate properly, shift interlock cassette on steering column must be replaced. Shift interlock cable may only be adjusted once after installing new shift interlock cassette.
- Shift interlock cassette is located on steering column, behind lock cylinder. (Scheme 13) To adjust shift interlock cassette, push adjustment tab inward until adjustment tab stops. Ensure adjustment tab is fully depressed when adjusting shift interlock cassette. Adjustment tab will click as it moves into place and automatically adjusts.
