ENGINE IDENTIFICATION
Note. For engine repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
Engine may be identified by Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stamped on metal tab, located near lower left corner of windshield. The eighth character identifies the engine model.
Engine identification number, located on cylinder block below cylinder head, may be required when ordering replacement parts.

VALVE ARRANGEMENT
Front Bank - I-E-I-E-I-E (Front-to-rear).
Rear Bank - E-I-E-I-E-I (Front-to-rear).
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
Hydraulic valve lifters are used. No valve adjustment is required.
Note. For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removal. Also place mating marks on engine hood and other major assemblies before removal.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. To trouble shoot engine mechanical components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
| CAUTION | Fuel system is under pressure. Pressure must be released prior to servicing fuel system components. |
- Loosen fuel tank cap to release pressure. Disconnect injector wiring harness from engine wiring harness. Connect jumper wire from terminal No. 1 of injector harness to ground. (Scheme 38)
- Connect jumper wire to terminal No. 2 of injector harness. (Scheme 38) Touch jumper wire to positive battery terminal for no more than 5 seconds to release fuel pressure. Remove jumper wires and reconnect wiring harness.

ENGINE

Removal
- Loosen fuel tank cap to release pressure. Disconnect injector wiring from engine wiring harness. Connect jumper wire from terminal No. 1 of injector harness to ground. see scheme 2
- Connect jumper wire to terminal No. 2 of injector harness. Touch jumper wire to positive battery terminal for no more than 5 seconds to release fuel pressure. Remove jumper wires and reconnect wiring harness.
- Disconnect battery cables. Mark hood hinge location on hood and remove hood. Drain cooling system. Disconnect all electrical connections and vacuum hoses. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses. Remove radiator and fan assembly.
- Wrap shop towel around fuel lines. Remove fuel lines from fuel rail by pushing inward on plastic ring located at end of fuel line fitting and pull fuel line from fitting. Disconnect accelerator cable.
- Remove air cleaner assembly. Raise vehicle and drain engine oil. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifolds. Remove transaxle inspection cover.
- Mark flex plate-to-torque converter position. Remove torque converter mounting bolts. Attach "C" clamp to retain torque converter in transaxle housing. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and set aside. Remove lower transaxle-to-block mounting bolts. Remove starter.
- Lower vehicle. Disconnect ground strap. Support transaxle. Attach engine hoist to engine. Remove upper transaxle mounting bolts. Mark right engine mount position on right rail support. Remove mount-to-rail mounting bolts. CAUTION: Mark engine mount location on frame for reassembly reference.
- Remove front engine mount through bolt. Remove left engine mount through bolt from inside wheelwell or insulator bracket-to-transaxle bolts. Remove engine.
Installation
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure fuel lines are installed until a "click" sound is heard. Align engine mounts and install. DO NOT tighten mounting bolts until all mounting brackets and bolts have been installed. Check axle shaft length with damper weight removed.
- Axle shaft length must be within specification. See AXLE SHAFT POSITIONING SPECIFICATIONS table. If axle shaft length requires adjustment, support engine/transaxle assembly with a floor jack. Loosen vertical bolts on engine mount near timing belt cover and front engine mount bracket-to-front crossmember bolts. Pry engine right or left as required to obtain correct axle shaft length.
- Tighten mounting bolts and nuts to specification. Recheck axle shaft length. Install damper weight and tighten to specification (if equipped). Fill cooling system.
Note. To fill and bleed cooling system, remove engine temperature sending unit, located in front of thermostat housing, near the spark plug wire holder. Fill cooling system until coolant reaches this level. Install sending unit and tighten to 60 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Finish filling cooling system.
INTAKE MANIFOLD

Scheme 39
- Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__fuel-pressure-release) in this article. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner-to-throttle body hose.
- Disconnect control cables and linkages at throttle body. Disconnect Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) motor and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) wiring harness connectors at throttle body. Remove vacuum hoses from throttle body and intake manifold.
- Remove EGR tube flange from air intake plenum (upper intake manifold). Disconnect vacuum hoses and EGR tube flange from air intake plenum. Disconnect wiring connectors at charge temperature sensor, MAP sensor and O2 sensor heater. Remove support brace from cylinder head to air intake plenum.
- Wrap shop towel around fuel lines. Remove fuel lines from fuel rail by pushing inward on plastic ring, located at end of fuel line fitting, and pull fuel line from fitting.
- Remove ignition coils and alternator bracket from air intake plenum. Remove air intake plenum 4 bolts. (Scheme 39) Rotate air intake plenum back over the valve cover. Cover intake manifold ports with shop rags.
- Disconnect vacuum hose at pressure regulator. Disconnect fuel injector wiring harness from engine wiring harness. Disconnect necessary sensor wiring connectors, near fuel rail and intake manifold.
- Remove fuel rail retaining bolts and fuel rail. Disconnect coolant hoses at intake manifold. Remove 8 intake manifold retaining bolts in proper sequence and remove intake manifold. (Scheme 40) Remove intake manifold gasket end seal retaining screws and remove gasket.

- Ensure sealing surfaces are clean. Apply a 1/4" diameter drop of Sealant (4318025) in the 4 corners of the intake manifold-to-cylinder head contact areas.
- Install intake manifold gasket. Tighten intake manifold gasket end seal retaining screws to 105 INCH lbs. (11 N.m). Install intake manifold. Tighten manifold bolts to specification in proper sequence using 3 steps. (Scheme 40)
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Ensure injector holes are clean. Lubricate injector "O" rings with engine oil prior to installation. Install injector until firmly seated in port.
- Tighten air intake plenum bolts to specification in sequence. (Scheme 39) Ensure fuel lines are installed until a "Click" sound is heard. The fuel supply line is a 5/16" diameter fitting and fuel return line is a 1/4" fitting.
- To fill and bleed cooling system, remove engine temperature sending unit. Sending unit is located in front of thermostat housing, near the spark plug wire holder. Fill cooling system until coolant reaches this level. Install sending unit and tighten to 60 INCH. lbs. (7 N.m). Finish filling cooling system.
- Raise vehicle and disconnect exhaust pipe from rear exhaust manifold flange. Disconnect EGR tube from rear exhaust manifold. Disconnect O2 sensor wiring.
- Remove alternator assembly support brace at front of exhaust manifold. Remove crossover pipe mounting bolts. Remove rear manifold retaining nuts and remove manifold.
- Lower vehicle. Remove heat shield-to-front manifold screws. Disconnect crossover pipe at front manifold. Remove front manifold retaining nuts and remove manifold.
Inspection
Check manifolds for cracks, damage and mounting surfaces for warpage. Repair or replace manifold if warpage exceeds .008" (.20 mm).
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mounting bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- Remove intake manifold. See «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__intake-manifold). Remove exhaust manifold. See «EXHAUST MANIFOLDS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r). Disconnect necessary wiring and coolant hoses.
- Remove rocker arm assembly and push rods. See «ROCKER ARMS & PUSH RODS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) in this article. Mark push rod location for reassembly reference. Remove push rods. Remove cylinder head bolts in sequence. (Scheme 41) Remove cylinder head.
Check cylinder head for warpage. Resurface head if warpage exceeds .00075" (.0191 mm) per 1" (25 mm) span. DO NOT grind more than .008" (.20 mm) from cylinder head surface or cylinder block deck surface.
- Hold a straightedge across threads of cylinder head bolts. Ensure cylinder head bolt threads contact straightedge in all areas. If threads fail to contact straightedge, bolts are stretched and must be replaced.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure cylinder head gaskets are installed with identification number facing away from cylinder block. Tighten cylinder head bolts to specification in sequence using 4 steps. (Scheme 41) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__torque-specifications) at end of article. CAUTION: No. 9 cylinder head bolt is a 8 mm bolt and must be tightened to specification after all other 11 mm bolts are tightened to specification.
- When tightening cylinder head bolts the required additional 1/4 turn, torque should exceed 90 ft. lbs. (122 N.m). Replace bolt if torque DOES NOT exceed this specification.
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Ensure proper procedure is followed when installing rocker arm assembly and push rods. See «ROCKER ARMS & PUSH RODS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r).
- When filling cooling system, remove engine temperature sending unit. Sending unit is located in front of thermostat housing, near the spark plug wire holder. Fill cooling system until coolant reaches this level. Install sending unit and tighten to 60 INCH. lbs. (7 N.m). Finish filling cooling system.
Scheme 41
Removal & Installation
- Disconnect battery cables. Remove right wheel inner splash shield. Remove drive belts. Remove retaining bolt and vibration damper. Using Seal Remover (C-4991), remove seal from timing chain cover. (Scheme 42)
- Use Seal Installer (C-4992) and install seal until even with timing chain cover surface. Using Plate (L-4524), thrust bearing/washer and bolt, install vibration damper. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
Scheme 42
- Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Disconnect coolant hoses from timing chain cover. Support engine and remove right engine mount. Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN in this article.
- Remove oil pick-up tube. Remove transaxle inspection cover (if necessary). Remove right wheel and inner splash shield. Remove drive belts.
- Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached. Remove A/C compressor mounting bracket. Remove retaining bolt and vibration damper. Remove idler pulley from front engine bracket. Remove engine bracket from front of cylinder block.
- Note location of cam sensor, located in top of timing chain cover. Loosen cam sensor retaining bolt enough to allow slot of sensor to slide past the bolt. Pull sensor from timing chain cover. Remove timing chain cover retaining bolts, cover, gasket and "O" rings.
Note. It may be necessary to tap lightly on top of cam sensor to remove sensor. DO NOT pull on wiring harness lead during cam sensor removal.
Note. Install front crankshaft oil seal after installing timing cover to ensure oil pump engages properly.
- Install new gasket and "O" rings on cylinder block. Rotate crankshaft so oil pump drive (flat areas) of crankshaft are vertically positioned.
- Align flat areas of oil pump in timing chain cover with crankshaft. Install cover. Ensure oil pump engages properly with crankshaft. Install timing chain cover retaining bolts and tighten to specification.
- Using Seal Installer (C-4992), install seal until seal is even with surface of timing chain cover. Using Plate (L-4524), thrust bearing/washer and bolt, install vibration damper.
- When installing cam sensor, ensure sensor mounting surface is clean. If the same cam sensor is installed, use NEW spacer and "O" ring. If replacement cam sensor is installed, ensure paper spacer is installed on cam sensor and "O" ring is installed on sensor.
- Apply engine oil to cam sensor "O" ring and install sensor in timing chain cover. Hold sensor downward until sensor contacts camshaft timing gear and tighten to specification in this position. Reconnect sensor wiring.
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__torque-specifications) at end of article.
- When filling cooling system, remove engine temperature sending unit. Sending unit is located in front of thermostat housing, near the spark plug wire holder. Fill cooling system until coolant reaches this level. Install sending unit and tighten to 60 INCH. lbs. (7 N.m). Finish filling cooling system.
- Remove timing chain cover. See «TIMING CHAIN COVER»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r). Timing chain stretch should be checked to determine if component replacement is required.
- Place torque wrench on camshaft sprocket bolt. Proper amount of torque must be applied in direction of engine rotation. Apply 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m) torque with cylinder heads installed or 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m) with cylinder heads removed. NOTE: When applying torque to camshaft sprocket bolt, DO NOT allow crankshaft to move. It may be necessary to hold crankshaft also.
- Once torque is applied, position measuring scale near timing chain so movement can be measured. Apply the same amount of torque in the opposite direction and note amount of chain movement. If movement exceeds 1/8" (3.17 mm), replace timing chain.
- Rotate crankshaft so timing marks are aligned. (Scheme 43) Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. Remove cup washer, camshaft sprocket, timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.
- Install timing chain and sprockets. Use straightedge to ensure timing marks are aligned. (Scheme 43) Install sprocket retaining bolt and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__torque-specifications) at end of article.
- Ensure camshaft end play is within specification. See «CAMSHAFT SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. If end play is not within specification, replace thrust plate, located between camshaft sprocket and camshaft. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
Scheme 43
- Remove air intake plenum (upper intake manifold). See «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__intake-manifold) . Disconnect spark plug wires. Disconnect closed ventilation system and evaporation control system components from valve cover (if necessary).
- Remove valve cover. Remove rocker arm and shaft assembly retaining bolts. Remove rocker arm assembly. If push rods are to be removed, mark component location for reassembly reference.
Note. When disassembling rocker arm assemblies, mark component location for reassembly. Components must be installed in original location.
- Ensure push rods are seated in valve lifters. Install rocker arm assembly in original location. Ensure steel retainers are located on the retaining bolt area of rocker arm shafts.
- Slowly tighten rocker arm shaft bolts to specification, starting at the center and working outward. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__torque-specifications) at end of article. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
| CAUTION | DO NOT operate engine until 20 minutes after rocker arm installation. This allows proper amount of time for valve lifters to bleed down. |
- Remove cylinder head. See «CYLINDER HEAD»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__cylinder-head). Remove yoke retainer bolts. Remove yoke retainer and aligning yoke. (Scheme 44)
- Using Valve Lifter Remover (C-4129), remove valve lifter. Mark component location for reassembly reference.
- Inspect valve lifter roller for damage. Ensure valve lifter O.D. and oil clearance is within specification. See «VALVE LIFTERS SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Inspect valve lifter bore in cylinder block and outside surface of lifter for scoring.
- If scoring exists, ream cylinder block bore for the next oversize valve lifter. Oversize valve lifters are available in .001" (.02 mm), .008" (.20 mm) and .030" (.76 mm).
Scheme 44

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure components are installed in original location. Lubricate valve lifters with engine oil prior to installation. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.

CAMSHAFT
Note. Manufacturer lists camshaft service procedure with engine removed only.
- Remove engine from vehicle. Remove intake manifold, cylinder head, timing chain cover, timing chain, rocker arms, push rods and valve lifters. See appropriate heading in this article.
- Remove thrust plate retaining screws. Remove camshaft.
Inspect camshaft for wear. Measure bearing journals. Replace camshaft if not within specification. See CAMSHAFT SPECIFICATIONS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.

- Lubricate camshaft with camshaft lubricant and install. Tighten thrust plate bolts to specification. Check camshaft end play. If end play exceeds specification, replace thrust plate. See «CAMSHAFT SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Ensure components are installed in original location.

Inspect bearing for damage. Replace bearings if I.D. is not within specification. See CAMSHAFT BEARING SPECIFICATIONS table.

CAMSHAFT BEARING SPECIFICATIONS
Use Camshaft Bearing Remover/Installer (C-3132-A) for bearing replacement. Ensure all oil holes are aligned. The No. 2 bearing must also index with oil passage to left cylinder head and No. 3 bearing indexes with oil passage to right cylinder head.
- Remove transaxle and flywheel or drive plate. Using screwdriver, pry seal from seal retainer.
- To install, place Seal Installer (C-4681) on crankshaft. Coat seal O.D. with Loctite (4057987). Position seal over seal installer and tap into seal retainer. Install flywheel or drive plate and transaxle.
- Drain cooling system. Remove water pump drive belt. Remove right front lower fender shield. Remove water pump pulley. Remove water pump retaining bolts. Remove water pump and "O" ring.
- To install, reverse removal procedure using new "O" ring. Tighten bolts to specification.
- When filling cooling system, remove engine temperature sending unit. Sending unit is located in front of thermostat housing, near the spark plug wire holder. Fill cooling system until coolant reaches this level. Install sending unit and tighten to 60 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Finish filling cooling system.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove dipstick. Drain engine oil. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan. To install, reverse removal procedure using new gasket. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
CYLINDER HEAD
Inspect cylinder head for cracks and warpage. Repair or replace cylinder head if warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD SPECIFICATIONS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. DO NOT grind more than .008" (.20 mm) total from surfaces of cylinder head or cylinder block deck.
Valve Springs
- Inspect valve spring tension, free length and maximum out-of-square. Replace if not within specification. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- Measure valve spring installed height from spring seat to bottom of spring retainer. If spacers are installed, measure from top of spacer. If height exceeds 1 19/32" (40.5 mm), install a 1/32" (.794 mm) thick spacer in cylinder head counterbore to obtain correct installed height. Valve Stem Oil Seals
Ensure oversize valve stem seals are used when oversize valves are installed.
Valve Guides
- Check valve stem oil clearance. Ensure valve stem diameter is within specification. Valve guide must be reamed for valve with oversize valve stem if clearance exceeds specification. See «VALVE LIFTERS SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- Valves are available with oversize valve stems of .006" (.15 mm), .016" (.40 mm) and .031" (.80 mm). Cylinder head must be replaced if guide cannot be cleaned using a .031" (.80 mm) reamer.
Note. DO NOT ream valve guides from standard to maximum oversize in one step. Ream guides to oversize in gradual steps, so guides are reamed true in relation to valve seat.
Valve Seat
Worn or burned valve seats can be reworked provided proper angles and seat width are obtained. Cylinder head must be replaced if valve seat cannot be corrected.
Seat Correction Angles
If seat width is too wide after grinding, use a 15 degree or 65 degree stone to alter seat width. A 15 degree stone will lower valve seat and a 65 degree stone will raise the valve seat.
Valves
Oversize valves are available in .005" (.15 mm), .016" (.40 mm) and .031" (.80 mm).
Piston & Rod Assembly
Piston must be installed with notch or groove on top of piston toward front of engine. Note direction of connecting rod installation on piston prior to removal. Connecting rod must be installed in original direction. No other information for connecting rod-to-piston installation is available from manufacturer.
Fitting Pistons
- To determine if piston-to-cylinder clearance is within specification, piston skirt diameter should be measured 1.65" (41.9 mm) downward from top of piston at 90 degree angle to piston pin. Piston diameter must be within specification. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. NOTE: Piston diameter should be measured at normal room temperature of 70°F (21°C).
- Cylinder bore measurements should be taken at .47" (11.9 mm) below top surface of cylinder bore, middle of bore and .47" (11.9 mm) from bottom of cylinder bore.
Piston Rings
Ensure ring end gap and side clearances are within specification. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS SPECIFICATIONS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Position ring gaps in proper location prior to installation. (Scheme 45)

Rod Bearings
Prior to installing rod bearings, hold a straightedge across threads of connecting rod bolts. Ensure connecting rod bolt threads contact straightedge in all areas. If threads fail to contact straightedge, bolts are stretched and must be replaced. Apply light coat of engine oil to connecting rod threads prior to tightening nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
Crankshaft & Main Bearings
- Prior to installing main bearings, hold a straightedge across threads of main bearing cap bolts. Ensure main bearing cap bolt threads contact straightedge in all areas. If threads fail to contact straightedge, bolts are stretched and must be replaced.
- Apply light coat of engine oil to threads on prior to tightening bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r__torque-specifications) at end of article.
| CAUTION | Crankshaft journal grinding should not exceed .012" (.30 mm) under standard size. DO NOT grind thrust surfaces of No. 2 main bearing. With cast iron crankshafts, final paper or cloth polishing after regrind must be done in same direction as engine rotation. |
Cylinder Block
- Check cylinder bore, out-of-round and taper. Measurements should be taken at .50" (12.7 mm) below top surface of cylinder bore, middle of bore and .50" (12.7 mm) from bottom of cylinder bore.
- Check valve lifter bore diameter. Repair or replace cylinder block if not within specification. See «VALVE LIFTERS SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
Note. Cylinder bore should be measured at normal room temperature of 70°F (21°C).
ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM
The crankshaft-driven oil pump provides lubrication to the main gallery. (Scheme 46)
Crankcase Capacity
Crankcase capacity with oil filter is 4.5 qts. (4.2L).
Normal Oil Pressure
Normal oil pressure should be 5 psi (.35 kg/cm 2 ) at curb idle and 30-80 psi (2.1-5.6 kg/cm 2 ) at 3000 RPM.

OIL PUMP
Note. Oil pan and timing chain cover must be removed to service oil pump. Pressure relief valve can be serviced by removing the oil pan and pick-up tube only.
REMOVAL & DISASSEMBLY
- Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN article in this section. Remove timing chain cover. See «TIMING CHAIN COVER»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- To remove pressure relief valve, drill a 1/8" (3.175 mm) hole in relief valve retainer cap. Retainer cap is located at oil pan surface of timing chain cover, near the oil pan stud.
- Install a self-tapping screw into the hole. With timing chain cover installed, pull on screw to remove retainer cap.
- With timing chain cover removed, clamp screw in a vice. Support timing chain cover while lightly tapping on cover with soft-faced hammer until retainer cap is removed.
- Remove spring and pressure relief valve. Remove pump cover bolts and pump cover. Note direction of rotor installation. Remove inner and outer rotors. (Scheme 47)
- Inspect components for damage. Using straightedge and feeler gauge, check flatness of pump cover. Replace cover if clearance is equal to or exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table.
- Measure thickness of both rotors. Replace rotors if not within specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table.
- Install outer rotor in timing chain cover. Measure clearance between outer rotor and timing chain cover. If clearance is equal to or exceeds specification, but outer rotor O.D. is within specification, replace timing chain cover.
- Install inner rotor and measure clearance between inner and outer rotors. Replace pump assembly if clearance is equal to or exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table.
- Place straightedge across timing chain cover surface. Using feeler gauge, check rotor end clearance between rotors and straightedge. Replace pump assembly if clearance is equal to or exceeds specification.
- Ensure pressure relief valve slides freely in bore. Check free length and pressure of pressure relief valve spring. Replace spring if not within specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#33l-v6-vin-r) table.
