Scheme 30

Scheme 30

Disassembly & Inspection

  1. Note location and direction of rocker arm components and bearing caps. Disassemble rocker arms. (Scheme 31) Ensure intake valve rocker arm shaft has a.12" (3 mm) oil hole in bottom of shaft. Exhaust valve rocker shaft does not have oil hole. The oil hole supplies oil to the exhaust valve rocker arm.
  2. Inspect components for damage. Replace if damaged. Ensure all oil holes are not restricted. Inspect camshaft and cylinder head journal areas for damage. Inspect distributor drive gear for damage. Measure lobe height. Replace camshaft if not within specification. See «CAMSHAFT SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-3) tables at end of article.

Note. Bearing caps are numbered for installation sequence.

Reassembly & Installation

  2. Install No. 1 bearing cap on rocker arm with machined portion of rocker arm shaft facing downward, toward the cylinder head. This will position notch areas of rocker arm shafts upward, pointing toward outside of bearing cap.
  3. Apply sealant to bearing cap mating surfaces at both ends of cylinder head. Ensure arrows on bearing caps are pointing in same direction as arrow on cylinder heads. Ensure bearing cap numbers are in order. (Scheme 32)
  4. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts to 85 INCH lbs. (10 N.m) in the following sequence: No. 3, No. 2, No. 1, and No. 4. Repeat procedure and tighten bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Install distributor adapter with new "O" ring. Coat camshaft oil seal lip with grease.

VALVE SEAT

Valve seat width must be within specification. Refer to the CYLINDER HEAD SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. No replacement procedure is available from manufacturer.

SEAT CORRECTION ANGLES

After grinding, if seat width is too wide, use a 15-degree or 65-degree stone to alter seat width. A 15-degree stone will lower valve seat and a 65-degree stone will raise the valve seat.

Rocker Arms & Auto Lash Adjusters

See CAMSHAFT & ROCKER ARMS in this article for service procedure.

Piston & Rod Assembly

  1. Ensure pistons and rods are installed in original cylinder location. Note cylinder number and location. (Scheme 31)

For cylinders No. 2, 4 and 6, install piston with the "L" mark toward the timing belt side of engine. Ensure front mark "72" on connecting rod is facing toward timing belt side of engine. (Scheme 33)

Scheme 33

Scheme 33

Fitting Pistons

Piston diameter should be measured at right angle to piston pin, approximately .08" (2.0 mm) from bottom of the piston skirt.

  2. Plain thrust bearing goes on front (timing belt side) of cylinder block and rear (flywheel side) of main bearing cap assembly. Tab thrust bearing goes on rear (flywheel side) of cylinder block and on front (timing belt side) of main bearing cap assembly.

Cylinder Block

  1. Check cylinder block head surface warpage, cylinder bore diameter, taper and out-of-round. Measurements should be taken .50" (12.7 mm) below top surface of cylinder bore, middle of bore and .50" (12.7 mm) from bottom of cylinder bore.
  2. Repair or replace cylinder block if not within specification. See «CYLINDER BLOCK»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-3) tables at end of article.

Oil Pump

The crankshaft-driven oil pump provides lubrication to the main gallery. (Scheme 36)

Crankcase Capacity

Crankcase capacity with oil filter is 4.5 qts. (4.3L).

Normal Oil Pressure

Oil pressure should be 35-100 psi (2.5-7.0 kg/cm 2 ) at 3000 RPM with engine at normal operating temperature.

Scheme 36

Scheme 36: Normal Oil Pressure

  2. Remove oil pump-to-cylinder block bolts. Note bolt location and length for reassembly. Remove oil pump. Disassemble oil pump. (Scheme 37) Remove oil seals from oil pump case.
  1. Inspect components for damage. Measure clearance between small area of inner rotor and oil pump case. Measure clearance between outer rotor and oil pump case.
  2. Install inner rotor and outer rotor in oil pump case. Place a straightedge across the pump case and both rotors. Using a feeler gauge, check the rotor end clearance between the rotors and the straightedge. Ensure relief plunger slides freely in the bore. Replace the oil pump assembly if measurements exceed specification. Refer to the «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/dynasty/i-1987-1993/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-3) table below.
