DESCRIPTION
| WARNING | The airbag system is a sensitive, complex electro-mechanical unit. Before attempting to diagnose, remove or install the airbag system components you must first disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable. Then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge. Failure to do so could result in accidental deployment of the airbag and possible personal injury. The fasteners, screws, and bolts, originally used for the airbag components, have special coatings and are specifically designed for the airbag system. They must never be replaced with any substitutes. Anytime a new fastener is needed, replace with the correct fasteners provided in the service package or fasteners listed in the parts books. |
| CAUTION | Do not hammer on steering column shaft. This may cause damage to the column internally. |
Note. When servicing the steering wheel after removing the old bolt, a NEW bolt must be used when installing.
Note. When servicing the steering coupler a NEW bolt must be used when installing.
Scheme 1
There are two types of columns available: electronic tilt/telescope (2) and manual tilt/telescope (not shown). Each type of column has been designed to be serviced as an assembly less wiring, switches, steering wheel, etc.
The tilt motor (3) can be replaced separately from the column, but the telescoping motor (1) is serviced with the column. The upper intermediate shaft (4) can also be serviced separately from the column.
The electronic tilt and telescope column is operated by a switch on the column located below the multi-function switch. The movement of the column is controlled by the memory seat module. Refer to MODULE, MEMORY, SEAT, OPERATION .
When servicing any component of the steering column, refer to Restraints and observe all WARNINGS and CAUTIONS. Refer to WARNING .
The steering column bearing housing (2) is bolted to the cowl as a seal and steering shaft stabilizer to reduce steering wheel vibration. The steering column shaft bearing (1) is contained within the steering column bearing housing (2). If the housing (2) needs serviced the steering column bearing (1) must also be replaced.
The steering column shroud is serviced with the steering column module. Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN, DESCRIPTION .
Note. Some vehicles equipped with Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS) may not have a power steering cooler.

The power steering fluid cooler (2) is located at the front of the vehicle. It is mounted to the radiator support just forward of the air-conditioning condenser and just rearward of the front fascia. The cooler is positioned so it is in the air flow through the front fascia of the vehicle.

- Drain the power steering fluid out of the reservoir.
- Remove the grille. Refer to «GRILLE, REMOVAL»(ref-465921-S35029314672012042300000) .
- Release the spring clamps (2) and remove both hoses from the cooler (1).
- Squeeze the two cooler retainer clips (1) near the base (2), behind the cooler pipe (3) to open the clip and remove the cooler.
