TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. To trouble shoot mechanical engine components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
Inspection
Check cylinder head warpage. Repair or replace cylinder head if warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

- To install, reverse removal procedure. Check cylinder head bolts for stretching before installing. Using straightedge, ensure threads are in a straight line. If not, replace bolt(s). (Scheme 20) Apply Mopar® lock and seal adhesive to 4 small cylinder head bolts. (Scheme 21) Lubricate large bolts with clean engine oil.
- Using 3 steps, tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence, and to specification. (Scheme 21) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-98253-S08964724442001051800000). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Inspection (Secondary Timing Chains)
To inspect secondary timing chains for wear, remove front cover. See FRONT COVER. Rotate engine clockwise until tensioner pistons are fully extended. Measure distance between tensioner housing and top of piston step ledge. (Scheme 22) If the distance at point "A" is more than.59" (.15 mm), replace secondary timing chain(s).

- Disconnect negative battery cable. Align timing mark on crankshaft damper with "TDC" mark on front cover. (Scheme 23) Ensure "V8" mark on right and left camshaft sprocket is at 12 o'clock position. (Scheme 24)
- Remove power steering pump. Remove access plugs from right and left cylinder head to access chain guide upper bolts. (Scheme 25) Remove oil fill housing for access to right secondary chain tensioner bolt. Remove front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(ref-98253-S28638113952001051800000). CAUTION: Cover oil pan opening to ensure plate behind left secondary chain tensioner does not fall into pan.
- Using adjustable pliers and Chain Tensioner Pin (8514), compress tensioner, and pin primary chain tensioner in place. (Scheme 26) Remove right and left secondary chain tensioners. (Scheme 27) CAUTION: A damaged or magnetized target wheel, located on right camshaft sprocket, could cause a no start condition. DO NOT hold camshaft target wheel while loosening or tightening right camshaft sprocket. DO NOT place target wheel near any magnetic source. CAUTION: DO NOT use force to rotate camshafts or crankshaft while timing chains are removed. Severe valve and/or piston damage could occur.
- Remove camshaft position sensor from right cylinder head. (Scheme 28) Remove right camshaft sprocket bolt. Hold tube portion of camshaft with adjustable pliers and remove sprocket. Slowly rotate right camshaft counterclockwise 45 degrees to a neutral position (no valve load). Repeat removal procedure for left sprocket, and slowly rotate left camshaft counterclockwise 15 degrees to a neutral position.
- Remove idler sprocket bolt, and slide idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket forward. Remove primary and secondary timing chains. Remove tensioner arms and chain guides. (Scheme 27)
- Inspect components for damage. Using feeler gauge and straightedge, check pump cover flatness. Measure thickness of inner and outer rotors. Measure outer rotor outside diameter. Replace oil pump assembly if not to specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-98253-S11385966082001051800000) table.
- Install outer rotor into pump body. Press outer rotor to one side, and measure clearance between outer rotor and pump body. Replace oil pump assembly if clearance exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-98253-S11385966082001051800000) table.
- With outer rotor installed in pump body, install inner rotor. Measure rotor tip clearance between inner and outer rotors. Replace oil pump assembly if clearance exceeds specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-98253-S11385966082001051800000) table.

- To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Prime oil pump by filling rotor cavity with engine oil before installation. Tighten cover bolts to 105 INCH lbs. (12 Nm).
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten oil pump and primary chain tensioner bolts in sequence and to specification. (Scheme 32) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-98253-S08964724442001051800000).
