DESCRIPTION

The navigation system offers several new customer features for expanded usability and convenience with hands-free voice-activated operation in addition to the touch screen buttons. The navigation system uses the Bluetooth microphone in the rear view mirror. Navigation routes can be based on a variety of formats including some of the following

  1. Destination entry by street intersection, city, zip code, street name, street address and number, state/province/country and phone number
  2. Stop/change route
  3. Save current position
  4. Personal menu, including Guide Me Home (Go Home), Trip Itinerary, List of Saved Locations, Favorite Points of Interest (from a data base), Manage Personal User and Choose User
  5. Personal Interests including recent routes, address book, Where Am I Now, Emergency (police stations, Dodge dealerships, fire stations, hospitals and emergency care centers), Trail and geographic coordinates
  6. Route options include shortest, quickest, maximize freeways, minimize freeways, avoid toll roads and avoid ferries
  7. Navigation can be put into DEMO mode to enhance trip planning

This navigation system will support Traffic Messaging. Traffic Messaging displays voice and pop up warning messages for medium and high priority situations on the route such as road closures due to accidents/hazardous situations and it can even generate a traffic detour for a traffic event located on the route.

OPERATION

The navigation system collects data from GPS satellites in orbit around the Earth. This information is sent to the radio to be processed and provides the user with present location and is used to provide the route planing and guidance as the vehicle is driven.

Scheme 68: DESCRIPTION

In vehicles equipped with the navigation system and the optional satellite audio feature the navigation antenna has been integrated into the satellite antenna on the roof of the vehicle. Refer to ANTENNA, SATELLITE, AUDIO, DESCRIPTION . In vehicles equipped with the navigation system, but not equipped with the optional satellite audio feature, a dedicated navigation antenna module (1) is used.

The dedicated navigation antenna module is located on the top of the instrument panel base trim near the windshield and adjacent to the sun load sensor. The navigation antenna module has a stamped metal mounting flange (2) that is secured to the instrument panel base trim by two screws. A single pigtail cable (3) with an integral connector (4) exits the antenna module and is routed down through the instrument panel to the navigation unit, which is integral to the Radio Receiver Module (RRM) (also known as the radio or the head unit). The antenna module, its mounting and the cable are all concealed beneath the defroster grille on the top of the instrument panel.

The dedicated navigation antenna module cannot be adjusted or repaired. If damaged or ineffective the entire unit must be replaced.

The navigation module acquires Global Positioning System (GPS) position data through a navigation antenna module. Vehicles equipped with the optional satellite radio system have a roof-mounted combination antenna that also receives satellite audio and cellular signals. Refer to ANTENNA, SATELLITE, AUDIO, DESCRIPTION . Vehicles not equipped with the optional satellite radio system have a dedicated navigation antenna module mounted on the top of the instrument panel near the windshield.

The navigation antenna module is used to provide satellite information for route calculation and vehicle positioning purposes to the navigation unit, which is integral to the Radio Receiver Module (RRM) (also known as the radio or the head unit). The antenna module receives time pulse information from the GPS satellites, then calculates and transmits altitude, latitude, longitude, number of satellites, satellite direction, satellite angle of elevation, direction, signal to noise ratio and accuracy information.

The hard wired circuits between components related to the navigation antenna module may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic tools and procedures. Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS . The wiring information includes wiring diagrams, proper wire and connector repair procedures, details of wire harness routing and retention, connector pin out information and location views for the various wire harness connectors, splices and grounds.

However, conventional diagnostic methods will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the navigation antenna module or the electronic controls and communication between modules and other devices that provide some features of the navigation system. The most reliable, efficient and accurate means to diagnose the navigation antenna module or the electronic controls and communication related to navigation system operation requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool. Scheme 69: REMOVAL

Note. In vehicles equipped with the optional satellite radio system, the navigation antenna is serviced as a unit with the combination antenna located on the roof panel. Refer to ANTENNA, SATELLITE, AUDIO, REMOVAL .

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery.
  2. Remove the Radio Receiver Module (RRM) (also known as the radio or the head unit) from the instrument panel in order to access and disconnect the cable (4) of the navigation antenna module (1) from the RRM. Refer to «RADIO, REMOVAL»(ref-646238-S04791459302014072800000) .
  3. Remove the defroster grille from the top of the instrument panel base trim (3). Refer to «GRILLE, DEFROSTER, REMOVAL»(ref-646233-S13556503792014072800000) .
  4. Remove the two screws (5) that secure the navigation antenna module mounting flange to the top of the instrument panel base trim adjacent to the sun load sensor (2).
  5. Remove the navigation antenna module from the instrument panel.
