REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGDeactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch off before disconnecting any control module connectors. Failure to do so could result in damage to control module. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Removal

  1. On M/T models, pry corner of shifter boot up and remove shifter boot from console. Remove cup holder, if equipped. Remove console mounting screws. Lift console upward and disconnect wire harness connector, if equipped. While removing console, route shifter boot through console.
  2. On all models, remove 2 screws holding trim cover to Air Bag Control Module (ACM) mounting bracket. Remove trim cover. Remove 2 instrument panel center support bracket nuts. Pull top of instrument panel support bracket rearward and down from instrument panel studs.
  3. To disconnect ACM connector, remove Red Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock from connector. Depress latch tab while pulling out on connector and disconnect connector. Remove ACM mounting bracket-to-transmission tunnel screws. Remove ACM and mounting bracket as an assembly.

Installation

CAUTIONDO NOT remove bolts holding ACM to ACM bracket. Bracket is supplied with replacement ACM. Use correct screws when installing ACM.

Install ACM with arrow pointing toward front of vehicle. Connect ACM connectors, ensuring connectors are locked into position. Tighten ACM mounting screws to 125 INCH lbs. (14 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. From a position clear of air bag(s), turn ignition switch to RUN position. Reconnect negative battery cable. Observe SRS/AIR BAG warning light. Warning light should illuminate for 6-8 seconds and then go out, indicating system is functioning properly. If warning light fails to illuminate, or illuminates and stays on, a system malfunction exists. See MITCHELL® AIR BAG SERVICE & REPAIR, DOMESTIC & IMPORTED VEHICLES manual.

  1. Ensure ignition switch is off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect brakelines from Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Lift Controller Anti-lock Brake (CAB) connector locking handle upward to release harness connector and remove connector from CAB. Remove 2 anti-lock control assembly-to-mounting bracket bolts. Tilt assembly upward where brakelines attach, and remove anti-lock control assembly from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove left underdash cover and knee bolster reinforcement. Remove 2 CTM retaining screws at right side of underdash opening. (Scheme 10)
  2. Slide CTM down into opening far enough to gain access to connectors. Disconnect harness connectors and remove CTM from underdash. To install, reverse removal procedure. Program CTM. See «PROGRAMMING»(ref-34573-S09153786352001010900000).

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On A/T models, turn ignition switch to UNLOCK position and shift gear selector to "1" position. On models equipped with tilt steering wheel, tilt wheel to lowest position. On all models, pry cluster bezel away from clips securing it to instrument panel. (Scheme 11)
  2. Remove 4 instrument cluster screws. On A/T models, shift gear selector to park position. On all models, pull cluster rearward, and disconnect 2 electrical connectors. On A/T models, pull cluster rearward enough to gain access to shift indicator retaining screws in back of instrument cluster. Remove shift indicator. On all models, remove instrument cluster. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Open garage door opener storage bin. While pulling console gently downward, push latch tabs forward to release. Slide console back to release clips. Lower console to access wiring. Disconnect wiring connectors. Remove console. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is located in engine compartment on right inner fender. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove connector covers. Disconnect 3 connectors from PCM. Remove bolts and PCM from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument bezel. On A/T models, turn ignition switch to UNLOCK position and shift gear selector to "1" position. On models equipped with tilt steering wheel, tilt wheel to lowest position. On all models, pry cluster bezel away from clips securing it to instrument panel. (Scheme 11)
  2. Remove 2 retaining screws and pull radio straight out to access antenna cable and harness connector. (Scheme 12) Disconnect harness connectors, antenna cable and ground strap. To install, reverse removal procedure.
