- Remove steering column from vehicle. Remove steering wheel from steering column. Pull canceling cam spring from upper end of shaft assembly, if it has not been previously removed. (Scheme 48) Remove turn signal switch housing screws. Remove turn signal switch housing from steering column housing. Compress spring retainer and upper bearing spring with tilt lock plate adapter J-36667 and lock plate compressor J-23653-A.
- Remove retaining ring. Remove spring retainer and upper bearing spring. Remove inner race seat and inner race. Pull tilt level on column housing assembly and tilt column all way up. (Scheme 49) Insert a Phillips screw driver into square opening at bottom of spring retainer. Push and turn left to release spring retainer and wheel-tilt spring. (Scheme 50)
- Remove spring retainer and wheel-tilt spring. Remove two pivot pins using pivot pin remover J-21854-01. (Scheme 51) Place lock cylinder in A/C position. Pull tilt lever to release column housing. Remove column housing and steering shaft from housing support. (Scheme 52) Remove shear bolts, shear bolt washers, and ignition switch housing from steering column housing as follows: (Scheme 53) Use a metal punch to start drill head. Drill off head of shear bolts down to steel shear bolt washers with a 6.5 mm (1/4 inch) drill bit. Separate washers and ignition switch housing from column housing. Remove threaded end of shear bolts from ignition switch housing with locking pliers. NOTE: After drilling and removing threaded end of shear bolts, all metal shavings must be cleaned from all parts.
- Remove lock cylinder from ignition switch housing by pushing lock cylinder release tab. (Scheme 54) Remove ignition switch retaining screw and remove ignition switch assembly. Remove steering shaft assembly from housing support. (Scheme 55)
- Remove tilt bumpers with a pair of pliers. (Scheme 56) Remove support screws and remove support housing from jacket assembly.

Disassembly - Steering Shaft Assembly
| CAUTION | Prior to separating upper shaft from lower shaft, note relationship of upper shaft, with lock bolt slot at 12 o'clock position, to lower shaft pinch bolt groove at 7 o'clock position. |
- Position upper shaft 90 degrees to lower shaft and separate two parts.
- Rotate centering sphere 90 degrees and remove it from upper shaft. Separate sphere halves and remove joint preload spring. (Scheme 57)- see scheme 59.

Assembly - Steering Shaft Assembly
- Lubricate centering sphere halves and joint preload spring with lithium grease. Place joint preload spring between sphere halves with ends of spring in notches.
- Lubricate sphere end of upper shaft with lithium grease. Place sphere into upper shaft and rotate sphere 90 degrees. Lubricate sphere end of lower shaft with lithium grease. NOTE: To insure proper operation, upper shaft and lower shaft must be aligned correctly when they are connected.
- Place lock bolt slot on upper shaft at 12 o'clock position. Place pinch bolt groove near end of lower shaft at 7 o'clock position. Connect upper shaft to lower shaft.
Note. All fasteners in following steps must be seated firmly before being tightened to specifications.
- Connect support housing to jacket assembly with support screws. Tighten support housing screws to 16 N.m (12 ft. lbs.). Connect tilt bumpers to support housing and snap them in place. Slide steering shaft assembly into support housing. Lubricate both bearings in column housing with lithium grease.
- Slide column housing onto shaft assembly and housing support. Lubricate pivot pins with lithium grease and slide pins into housing until pins are bottomed. Tap pivot pins in place. NOTE: The pivot pins must be staked to column housing after installation. Stake each pin at 3 equally spaced locations.
- Pull tilt lever on column housing and tilt column all way up. Lubricate tilt spring with lithium grease. Install tilt spring and spring retainer. Be sure spring engages locating tab on support housing. Insert a Phillips screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer, push down, and turn right to lock it in place.
- Install ignition switch with ignition switch retaining screw. Tighten ignition switch retaining screw to 2 N.m (18 INCH lbs.). Connect wiring. NOTE: To ensure that tab on lock-cylinder shaft and slotted opening on ignition switch are in alignment, lock cylinder must be in ACC position prior to installation.
- Install lock cylinder into ignition switch housing. Attach ignition switch housing to column housing with shear bolt washers and shear bolts. Tighten ignition switch housing shear bolts until bolt heads separate from body. approximately 11 N.m (97 INCH lbs.). Place lock cylinder in LOCK position and remove key.
- Rotate steering shaft assembly until lock bolt engages and locks steering shaft in position. Install inner race and inner race seat. Install upper bearing spring and spring retainer. Compress upper bearing spring and spring retainer with tilt lock plate adapter J-2-6667 and lock plate compressor J-23653-A. Place retaining ring into groove on upper shaft.
- Connect turn signal switch housing to steering column housing with turn signal switch housing screws. Tighten turn signal switch housing screws to 3 N.m (27 INCH lbs.). Install steering column into vehicle. Install cancelling cam spring and steering wheel onto steering column.
