TROUBLE SHOOTING

Refer to TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING section.

TESTING

Note. If steering system is operating incorrectly, problem may be caused by defective vehicle speed signal from TCM. Steering operation can be checked using DRB and performing SPD PROP STEER test. Before performing SPD PROP STEER test, ensure gearshift is in Park, apply brakes and start engine. The SPD PROP STEER test will cause speedometer to display 60 MPH and required steering effort will increase. Note effort required to turn steering during test with brakes applied. Release brake and note that steering effort should decrease. Steering effort should be noticeably different. Repeat procedure to ensure correct steering effort. If steering operation is not correct, perform SYSTEM TEST .

  1. With ignition off, disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM). (Scheme 5) Disconnect 2-pin and 3-pin connectors at Speed Proportional Steering Module (SPSM). (Scheme 6) Inspect connectors and clean or repair if necessary.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance on VSS Signal Circuit (pin No. 3). (Scheme 7) If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in vehicle speed sensor circuit and perform «TEST VER-1»(ref-52543-S04167772592001092500000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance on VSS signal circuit (pin No. 58). (Scheme 8) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair VSS signal circuit for short to ground and perform «TEST VER-1»(ref-52543-S04167772592001092500000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step
  4. Using an ohmmeter, probe ground circuit. (Scheme 8) If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open ground circuit and perform «TEST VER-1»(ref-52543-S04167772592001092500000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  5. With ignition on, use a voltmeter to probe the fused ignition switch output circuit (pins No. 8 and 11). (Scheme 8) If the voltage is less than 9 volts, repair open fused ignition switch output circuit and perform «TEST VER-1»(ref-52543-S04167772592001092500000). If voltage is greater than 9 volts, go to next step.
  6. Using an ohmmeter, measure across solenoid control valve circuit 2 pin connector. (Scheme 6) If resistance is 5-7 ohms, replace speed proportional steering module and perform «TEST VER-1»(ref-52543-S04167772592001092500000). If resistance is not 5-7 ohms, replace solenoid control valve and pigtail. Perform «TEST VER-1»(ref-52543-S04167772592001092500000).

TEST VER-1

  1. Connect DRB to Data Link Connector (DLC). Reconnect any disconnected components. With DRB, erase all trouble codes. With DRB, display transmission temperature. Start and run engine until transmission is at normal operating temperature.
  2. Check transaxle fluid and adjust if necessary. If TCM module, torque converter or transaxle has been replaced, perform computer relearn procedure. CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See «COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES»(ref-10824) article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
  3. Road test vehicle. With DRB, read "RPM Display" under "Monitor". Make 15-20 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 upshifts. Perform these shifts from a standing start to 45 MPH with a constant throttle opening of 20-25 degrees. At speeds less than 25 MPH, make 5-8 wide open throttle kickdowns to first gear. Allow at least 5 seconds each in 2nd and 3rd between each kickdown.
  4. Diagnose power steering system, using a DRB scan tool, if power steering is suspected of not functioning properly. Test consists of checking available power steering assist, using DRB scan tool, to create an electrically simulated vehicle speed of zero to 60 MPH.
  5. Solenoid control valve and solenoid control module are both serviceable components. Both components are replaceable without requiring removal of steering gear from vehicle.
