Wiper System & Washer System: Removal & Installation Chevrolet Uplander I

Removal Procedure

  1. Reposition the underhood electrical center. Refer to «Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Replacement»(ref-241671-S41230725642006081100000) in Wiring Systems.
  2. Remove the right front diagonal brace. Refer to «Brace Replacement - Sheet Metal Diagonal (Chevrolet)»(ref-241699-S32208228052006081100000) or «Brace Replacement - Sheet Metal Diagonal (Pontiac)»(ref-241699-S01288087302006081100000) or «Brace Replacement - Sheet Metal Diagonal (Buick)»(ref-241699-S30005671862006081100000) in Body Front End.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the washer pumps.
  4. Disconnect the washer hose connections at the front and rear washer pumps.
  5. Contain the washer solvent in a suitable container.
  6. Disconnect the 2 front engine wiring harness connections from the wiring harness.
  7. Remove the bolts from the fender flange and inner wheelhouse.
  8. Lower the washer container into the engine compartment.
  9. Carefully pull the forward engine harness over the top of the washer container spout.
  10. Remove the washer solvent container (2) from the engine compartment.
  11. Transfer the following components: Cap Front washer pump Rear washer pump, if equipped

Installation Procedure

  1. Install new grommets into the washer container for the wiper washer pumps.
  2. Install the following removed components: Cap Front washer pump Rear washer pump, if equipped
  3. Pull the engine harness forward and lower the container into the engine compartment.
  4. Position the underhood electrical harness over the top of the washer container spout.
  5. Position the washer container (2) to the right front inner fender.
  6. Install the bolts. Tighten: Tighten the washer container bolts in sequence, as shown, to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  7. Connect the washer jumper hoses.
  8. Connect the electrical connectors.
  9. Install the right front diagonal brace. Refer to «Brace Replacement - Sheet Metal Diagonal (Chevrolet)»(ref-241699-S32208228052006081100000) or «Brace Replacement - Sheet Metal Diagonal (Pontiac)»(ref-241699-S01288087302006081100000) or «Brace Replacement - Sheet Metal Diagonal (Buick)»(ref-241699-S30005671862006081100000) in Body Front End.
  10. Reposition the underhood electrical center. Refer to «Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Replacement»(ref-241671-S41230725642006081100000) in Wiring Systems.
  11. Refill the washer container with new washer solvent.
  12. Verify the operation of the wipers/washer systems.
  1. Remove the washer solvent from the washer solvent container.
  2. Disconnect the front washer pump electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the front washer pump hose.
  4. Using a small flat-bladed tool, remove the front washer pump (3) from the washer solvent container.
  5. Using a small flat-bladed tool, remove the seal from the washer solvent container.
  1. Position the seal to the washer solvent container pressing in until fully seated.
  2. Position the front washer pump (3) to the washer solvent container pressing in until fully seated.
  3. Connect the front washer pump hose.
  4. Connect the front washer pump electrical connector.
  5. Fill the washer solvent container with washer solvent.
  6. Inspect for leaks.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ACCY position.
  2. Set the wiper switch to the Delay position.
  3. Turn the ignition switch off when the wipers are in the innerwipe position.
  4. Using a small flat-bladed tool, remove the lower washer nozzle from the wiper arm.
  5. Using a small flat-bladed tool, remove the upper washer nozzle from the wiper arm.
  6. Disconnect the upper washer nozzle from the upper washer nozzle hose.
  7. Remove the upper washer nozzle hose from the wiper arm.
  8. Disconnect the washer nozzle from the washer hose.
  9. Remove the washer nozzle hose from the wiper arm.
  1. Position the washer nozzle hose to the wiper arm.
  2. Connect the washer nozzle to the washer hose.
  3. Install the upper washer nozzle hose to the wiper arm.
  4. Connect the upper washer nozzle to the upper washer nozzle hose.
  5. Position the upper washer nozzle to the wiper arm, pressing in until fully seated.
  6. Position the lower washer nozzle to the wiper arm, pressing in until fully seated.
  7. Inspect the washers for proper operation.
  1. Remove the air inlet grille panel. Refer to «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Chevrolet)»(ref-241699-S36510933202006081100000) , «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Pontiac)»(ref-241699-S09397680152006081100000) or «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Buick)»(ref-241699-S22849547022006081100000) in Body Front End.
  2. Disconnect the front washer hose (1) from the retention clips (2).
  3. Disconnect the front washer hose from the air inlet grille panel.
  4. Remove the front washer hose grommet from the grille panel pinch weld.
  5. Disconnect the front washer hose from the washer solvent container (3).
  6. Disconnect the front washer hose from the front washer pump.
  7. Remove the front washer hose from the vehicle.
  1. Position the front washer hose to the vehicle.
  2. Install the front washer hose to the washer pump.
  3. Secure the front washer hose to the washer solvent container.
  4. Install the front washer hose grommet into the grille panel pinch weld.
  5. Connect the front washer hose to the air inlet cowl panel retainers (2).
  6. Install the air inlet grille panel. Refer to «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Chevrolet)»(ref-241699-S36510933202006081100000) , «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Pontiac)»(ref-241699-S09397680152006081100000) or «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Buick)»(ref-241699-S22849547022006081100000) in Body Front End.
  1. Remove the right cowl trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Cowl Side»(ref-241679-S28819948222006081100000) .
  2. Remove the right center lower trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Lower Center Pillar»(ref-241679-S03977818532006081100000) .
  3. Remove the right rear quarter trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Rear Quarter - Right»(ref-241679-S40373754052006081100000) .
  4. Disconnect the rear washer hose from the rear washer pump.
  5. Disconnect the rear washer hose from the washer solvent container.
  6. Disengage the washer hose grommet (1) from the dash panel below the plenum in behind the wiper module.
  7. Cut the tape securing the washer hose to the electrical harness loom for the full length back to the D-pillar hose connection
  8. Disconnect the hose from retainers in the rear quarter.
  9. Partially lower the headliner at rear of vehicle to access the washer hose at the jumper. Refer to «Headliner Replacement»(ref-241679-S22770420452006081100000) .
  10. Disconnect the washer hose (1) at the liftgate jumper hose connection (2).
  11. Pull the rear washer hose end out through the opening in the dash panel.
  12. Remove the rear washer hose from the right side of the vehicle.
  1. Route the rear washer hose (1) along the right side of the vehicle and secure the retention clips (2).
  2. Apply washer solvent to the rear washer hose ends in order to secure to the liftgate connection (3).
  3. Position the headliner and secure in place. Refer to «Headliner Replacement»(ref-241679-S22770420452006081100000) .
  4. Install the rear washer hose end through the opening in the dash panel.
  5. Tape the washer hose to the electrical harness loom approximately every 101.6-127 mm (4-5 in) apart beginning at the rear and working forward to the washer hose dash panel grommet.
  6. Secure the washer hose grommet (2) to the front dash panel (1).
  7. Connect the forward portion of the rear washer hose to the washer solvent container, rear washer pump spout.
  8. Install the rear quarter trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Rear Quarter - Right»(ref-241679-S40373754052006081100000) .
  9. Install the lower center trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Lower Center Pillar»(ref-241679-S03977818532006081100000) .
  10. Install the right cowl trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Cowl Side»(ref-241679-S28819948222006081100000) .
  1. Open and support the hood.
  2. Disconnect the washer hose from the front washer pump hose (5).
  3. Remove the wiper arm nut cover (3).
  4. Remove the wiper arm nut (4).
  5. Using the J 39637 , remove the wiper arm from the wiper drive system module. See «Special Tools»(ref-241701-S05177558142006081100000) .
  6. Remove the wiper blade from the wiper arm connection.
  1. Install the wiper blade onto the wiper arm.
  2. Position the wiper arm onto the wiper arm pivot shaft.
  3. Align the wiper blade tip to the horizontal mark on the windshield within the blackout area (a or b).
  4. Install the wiper arm nut (4). Tighten: Tighten the nut to 48 N.m (35 lb ft).
  5. Install the wiper arm nut cover (3)
  6. Connect the washer nozzle hose to the washer pump hose (5).
  7. Close the hood.
  8. Inspect the wipers for proper operation.
  1. Open and support the hood.
  2. Lift either the passenger or driver side arm in the upright position.
  3. Press the wiper blade clip button in and remove the wiper blade from the inside radius of the wiper arm.
  4. Remove the wiper arm out through the opening in the wiper blade.
  1. Insert the hook of the wiper arm through the opening in the wiper blade.
  2. Position the wiper blade pivot in the inside radius of the wiper arm hook.
  3. Pull the wiper blade pivot into the wiper arm hook until the pivot locks into the hook.
  4. Lower both wiper arms back onto the windshield.
  5. Close the hood.
  6. Inspect the wipers for proper operation.
  1. Remove the wiper blade from the wiper arm. Refer to «Wiper Arm Blade Replacement»(ref-241701-S02454174202006081100000) .
  2. Remove the bottom claws of the wiper blade from the notches in the wiper blade element.
  3. Pull the wiper blade element out through the wiper blade claws.
  1. Insert the open end of the wiper blade element into the bottom claws of the wiper blade.
  2. Guide the wiper blade element through the wiper blade claw sets.
  3. Engage the bottom claw of the wiper blade into the notches in wiper blade element.
  4. Install the wiper blade onto the wiper arm. Refer to «Wiper Arm Blade Replacement»(ref-241701-S02454174202006081100000) .
  1. Remove the wiper motor module (5). Refer to «Wiper Motor Module Replacement»(ref-241701-S15987951412006081100000) .
  2. Using the J 39232 , disconnect the transmission linkage (1) from the wiper motor crank arm (5). See «Special Tools»(ref-241701-S05177558142006081100000) .
  3. Remove the wiper motor crank arm nut (4) and crank arm (5).
  4. Remove the wiper motor screws (3).
  5. Remove the wiper motor from the module assembly.
  1. Position the wiper motor to the module assembly.
  2. Install the motor to module screws. Tighten: Tighten the motor screws to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
  3. Position the crank arm (5) to the wiper motor pivot shaft. Ensure the arm resides between the 2 casting dimples (2) as shown.
  4. Install the crank arm pivot nut (4). Tighten: Tighten the pivot nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  5. Using the J 39529 , secure the transmission link (1) to the wiper crank arm (5). See «Special Tools»(ref-241701-S05177558142006081100000) .
  6. Position the module assembly to the lower plenum. Refer to «Wiper Motor Module Replacement»(ref-241701-S15987951412006081100000) .
  7. Connect the electrical connector (2) to the wiper motor (1).
  8. Inspect the front wiper system operation.
  1. Raise and support the hood.
  2. Disconnect the wiper motor electrical connector.
  3. Lower the wiper motor module from the air plenum. Refer to «Wiper Motor Module Replacement»(ref-241701-S15987951412006081100000) .
  4. Using the J 39232 , separate the wiper transmission link (1) from the wiper motor crank arm. See «Special Tools»(ref-241701-S05177558142006081100000) .
  5. Remove the wiper motor pivot shaft nut (4).
  6. Remove the crank arm (5) from the wiper motor pivot shaft.
  1. Once aligned, secure the crank arm nut (4) while holding the crank arm between the 2 motor casting dimples (2). Tighten: Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  2. Using the J 39529 , connect the transmission link (1) to the wiper motor crank arm (5). See «Special Tools»(ref-241701-S05177558142006081100000) .
  3. Secure the wiper module. Refer to «Wiper Motor Module Replacement»(ref-241701-S15987951412006081100000) .
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the wiper motor.
  5. Verify the operation of the wiper system.
  6. Close the hood.
  1. Open and support the hood.
  2. Remove the driver side wiper arm (2). Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement»(ref-241701-S36566410302006081100000) .
  3. Remove the passenger side wiper arm (3). Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement»(ref-241701-S36566410302006081100000) .
  4. Remove the air inlet grille panel. Refer to «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Chevrolet)»(ref-241699-S36510933202006081100000) or «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Pontiac)»(ref-241699-S09397680152006081100000) or «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Buick)»(ref-241699-S22849547022006081100000) in Body Front End.
  5. Lower the washer container into the engine compartment. Refer to «Washer Solvent Container Replacement»(ref-241701-S10261093362006081100000) .
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector (2) from the wiper motor (1).
  7. Remove the 4 bolts, as shown, from the wiper module (5).
  8. Carefully guide the passenger side module out first from the opening in the front plenum.
  9. Pull the module from the drive side fender flange opening.
  10. Remove the module from the vehicle.
  1. Position the wiper module (5) to the lower plenum in the driver side fender flange opening first.
  2. Rotate the module (5) into the opening at the passenger side plenum.
  3. Ensure the rear center mount is secure into the sheet metal flange at the rear of the module.
  4. Install the wiper module bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts in sequence, as shown, to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  5. Connect the electrical connector (2) to the motor (1).
  6. Install the air inlet grille panel. Refer to «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Chevrolet)»(ref-241699-S36510933202006081100000) , «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Pontiac)»(ref-241699-S09397680152006081100000) or «Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Buick)»(ref-241699-S22849547022006081100000) in Body Front End.
  7. Install the driver side wiper arm (2). Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement»(ref-241701-S36566410302006081100000) .
  8. Install the passenger side wiper arm (3). Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement»(ref-241701-S36566410302006081100000) .
  9. Secure the washer container. Refer to «Washer Solvent Container Replacement»(ref-241701-S10261093362006081100000) .
  10. Close the hood.
  11. Inspect the wiper system for proper operation.
  1. Remove the washer solvent from the washer solvent container.
  2. Disconnect the rear washer pump electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the rear washer pump hose.
  4. Using a small flat-bladed tool, remove the rear washer pump from the washer solvent container.
  5. Using a small flat-bladed tool, remove the seal from the washer solvent container.
  1. Position the seal to the washer solvent container, pressing in until fully seated.
  2. Position the rear washer pump to the washer solvent container, pressing in until fully seated.
  3. Connect the rear washer pump hose.
  4. Connect the rear washer pump electrical connector.
  5. Fill the washer solvent container with washer solvent.
  1. Using a small flat-bladed tool, push in both sides to release fingers while pulling outwards on nozzle (6).
  2. Remove the rear washer nozzle (6) from the rear washer hose connection (5).
  1. Install the washer nozzle (6) to the rear washer hose connection (5).
  2. Position the rear washer nozzle (6) to the liftgate opening, pressing in until fully seated.
  1. Ensure the wiper is placed in the park position.
  2. Disengage the finish cover (3) from the wiper arm (5).
  3. Remove the wiper arm pivot nut (4).
  4. Using the J 39822 , remove the rear wiper arm. See «Special Tools»(ref-241701-S05177558142006081100000) .
  5. Remove the rear wiper blade from the rear wiper arm. Refer to «Wiper Arm Blade Replacement - Rear»(ref-241701-S12410181512006081100000) .
  1. Install the rear wiper blade onto the rear wiper arm. Refer to «Wiper Arm Blade Replacement - Rear»(ref-241701-S12410181512006081100000) .
  2. Position the rear wiper arm onto the wiper motor pivot shaft 45 mm (1.77 in) from the bottom edge of the glass (1). NOTE: Refer to «Fastener Notice»(ref-241680-S40752786592006081100000) in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Install the rear wiper arm nut. Tighten: Tighten the nut to 25 N.m (19 lb ft).
  4. Connect the rear wiper arm finish cover (3).
  5. Inspect the rear wiper system for proper operation.

Remove Procedure

  1. Push in the button of the wiper blade clip and remove the wiper blade from the inside radius of the wiper arm.
  2. Pull the wiper arm out through the opening in the wiper blade.
  1. Insert the hook of the wiper arm through the opening in the wiper blade.
  2. Position the wiper blade pivot in the inside radius of the wiper arm hook.
  3. Pull the wiper blade pivot into the wiper arm hook until the pivot locks into the hook.
  4. Operate the wipers and check for proper operation.

Fastener Tightening Specifications: Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications . Preliminary Procedure: Gently lift the rear wiper arm blade off the liftgate window in order to remove the wiper blade element.
1Rear Wiper Blade Element Tip: Use a pair of pliers to remove the wiper blade element from the wiper blade bear claws.

Blade Element Replacement - Rear

  1. Remove the rear wiper arm (5). Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement - Rear»(ref-241701-S23682690922006081100000) .
  2. Remove the rear wiper motor drive shaft nut (6).
  3. Remove the washer (7) and seal (8) from the wiper motor drive shaft.
  4. Remove the liftgate trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Liftgate»(ref-241689-S03071284502006081100000) in Body Rear End.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the rear wiper motor.
  6. Remove the rear wiper motor screws.
  7. Remove the rear wiper motor (3) from the liftgate (5).
  8. Remove the rear wiper motor from the vehicle.
  1. Position the rear wiper motor (3) to the liftgate.
  2. Install the rear wiper motor screws. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  3. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the wiper motor.
  4. Install the washer (7) and seal (8) onto the rear wiper motor drive shaft.
  5. Install the rear wiper motor drive shaft nut (6). Tighten: Tighten the nut to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  6. Install the rear wiper arm. Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement - Rear»(ref-241701-S23682690922006081100000) .
  7. Inspect rear wiper for proper operation.
  8. Install the liftgate trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Liftgate»(ref-241689-S03071284502006081100000) in Body Rear End.
  1. Remove the rear wiper arm (5). Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement - Rear»(ref-241701-S23682690922006081100000) .
  2. Remove the rear wiper motor drive shaft nut (6).
  3. Remove the washer (7) and seal (8) from the wiper motor drive shaft.
  4. Remove the liftgate trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Liftgate»(ref-241689-S03071284502006081100000) .
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the rear wiper motor.
  6. Remove the rear wiper motor screws.
  7. Remove the rear wiper motor (3) from the liftgate (5).
  8. Remove the rear wiper motor from the vehicle.
  1. Position the rear wiper motor (3) to the liftgate.
  2. Install the rear wiper motor screws. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  3. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the wiper motor.
  4. Install the washer (7) and seal (8) onto the rear wiper motor drive shaft.
  5. Install the rear wiper motor drive shaft nut (6). Tighten: Tighten the nut to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  6. Install the rear wiper arm. Refer to «Wiper Arm Replacement - Rear»(ref-241701-S23682690922006081100000) .
  7. Inspect rear wiper for proper operation.
  8. Install the liftgate trim panel. Refer to «Trim Panel Replacement - Liftgate»(ref-241689-S03071284502006081100000) .
