Cellular Communication Systems: Removal & Installation Chevrolet Uplander I

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the instrument panel (I/P) trim pad. Refer to «Upper Trim Pad, Outer Trim Cover, Fuse Block Access Cover Replacement - Instrument Panel»(ref-241678-S18664411922006081100000) in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  2. Remove the garnish molding from the right side windshield pillar.
  3. Unscrew the coaxial cable from the cellular antenna on the windshield.
  4. Unscrew the coaxial cable from the VIU/VCU module.
  5. Remove the bolt from the ground tab on the right side on the I/P.
  6. Remove the cable clips which secure the cable to the I/P.
  7. Remove the coaxial cable.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the coaxial cable.
  2. Install the cable clips to the I/P frame.
  3. Install the bolt to the ground tab on the right side on the I/P.
  4. Install and tighten the coaxial cable to the VIU/VCU module.
  5. Retape the cable to the A-pillar.
  6. Install and tighten the coaxial cable to the cellular antenna on the windshield.
  7. Install the garnish molding to the right side windshield pillar.
  8. Install the I/P trim pad. Refer to «Upper Trim Pad, Outer Trim Cover, Fuse Block Access Cover Replacement - Instrument Panel»(ref-241678-S18664411922006081100000) in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  1. Lower the headliner. Refer to «Headliner Replacement»(ref-241679-S22770420452006081100000) in Interior Trim.
  2. Disconnect the cables from the antenna.
  3. Loosen the retaining nut till the antenna assembly can be pulled from the top of the roof.
  1. Place the antenna assembly on the roof opening.
  2. Tighten the retaining nut. Tighten: Tighten the nut to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  3. Connect the antenna cables
  4. Install the headliner. Refer to «Headliner Replacement»(ref-241679-S22770420452006081100000) in Interior Trim.
  1. Remove the headliner. Refer to «Headliner Replacement»(ref-241679-S22770420452006081100000) .
  2. Disconnect the antenna cables from the antenna base cable connectors.
  3. Remove the antenna base bolt.
  4. Disengage the retainers at the inside of the roof.
  5. Remove the antenna base assembly.
  1. Route the antenna base cables through the roof opening.
  2. Install the antenna base to the roof.
  3. Secure the antenna base with the bolt. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
  4. Connect the antenna cables to the antenna base cable connectors.
  5. Install the headliner. Refer to «Headliner Replacement»(ref-241679-S22770420452006081100000) .

1Mobile Telephone Digital Antenna Assembly Tip: The release tab is not visible with the mast assembled to the antenna base. Using a small flat-bladed tool, push in and hold the release tab, then rotate the mast counterclockwise in order to release the mast from the antenna base.

Mobile Telephone Digital Antenna Replacement

  1. Remove the courtesy lamp lens.
  2. Remove the screw near the courtesy lamp.
  3. Grasp the overhead console and pull downward in order to disengage the fasteners.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the overhead console.
  5. Remove the screws securing the OnStar® button assembly (4) to the overhead console.
  6. Remove the OnStar® Microphone from the OnStar® button assembly. Refer to «OnStar Microphone Replacement»(ref-241669-S04441198512006081100000) .
  1. Install the OnStar® Microphone into the OnStar® button assembly. Refer to «OnStar Microphone Replacement»(ref-241669-S04441198512006081100000) .
  2. Position the OnStar® button assembly (4) to the overhead console.
  3. Install the screws to secure the OnStar® button assembly to the overhead console. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
  4. Connect the electrical connectors.
  5. Align the overhead console within the vehicle.
  6. Press up on the overhead console engaging the fasteners in order to secure the console to the vehicle.
  7. Install the overhead console screw. Tighten: Tighten the screw to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
  8. Install the courtesy lamp lens.
  1. Remove the windshield garnish molding. Refer to «Garnish Molding Replacement - Windshield Pillar»(ref-241679-S05261698922006081100000) in Interior Trim.
  2. Remove the upper trim pad. Refer to «Upper Trim Pad, Outer Trim Cover, Fuse Block Access Cover Replacement - Instrument Panel»(ref-241678-S18664411922006081100000) in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  3. Remove the bolt holding the locking strap which secures the VCIM to the bracket.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. Disconnect the cell antenna coaxial cable from the VCIM.
  6. Remove the VCIM from the bracket and from the vehicle.
  1. When replacing a VCIM, record the 11-digit ESN and the 10-digit STID number from the label on the new VCIM.
  2. Install the VCM to the bracket using the clip strap and tighten the bolt. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  3. Connect the electrical connectors.
  4. Connect the cell antenna coaxial cable to the VCIM.
  5. Install the upper trim pad. Refer to «Upper Trim Pad, Outer Trim Cover, Fuse Block Access Cover Replacement - Instrument Panel»(ref-241678-S18664411922006081100000) in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  6. Install the windshield garnish molding. Refer to «Garnish Molding Replacement - Windshield Pillar»(ref-241679-S05261698922006081100000) in Interior Trim.
  7. Reconfigure the OnStar® system. Refer to «Control Module References»(ref-241672-S08014971642006081100000) in Computer/Integrating Systems.
  1. Remove the courtesy lamp lens.
  2. Remove the overhead console screw near the courtesy lamp.
  3. Grasp the overhead console and pull downward in order to disengage the fasteners.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the overhead console.
  5. Use a small flat-bladed tool to remove the OnStar® microphone (3) from the OnStar® button assembly (4).
  1. Position the OnStar® microphone (3) to the opening in the OnStar® button assembly (4).
  2. Push the OnStar® microphone (3) into the opening in the OnStar® button assembly (4) until the fasteners engage securing the microphone to the button assembly.
  3. Connect the electrical connectors.
  4. Align the overhead console within the vehicle.
  5. Press up on the overhead console engaging the fasteners in order to secure the console to the vehicle.
  6. Install the overhead console screw. Tighten: Tighten the screw to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
  7. Install the courtesy lamp lens.
