Service Programming System (SPS)

For step by step programming instructions, please refer to the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

IMPORTANTDO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer's concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle's battery. Incorrect system voltage or voltage fluctuations from a battery charger, may cause programming failure or control module damage. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle's battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's manual. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
  2. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  3. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
  4. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
  5. DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

Passenger Presence System (PPS) Rezeroing Procedure

Important

  1. Before rezeroing the passenger presence system (PPS), the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS.
  2. When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming on and off. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults.
  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. Verify that all supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) and PPS components, connectors and connector position assurances (CPAs) are properly connected and mounted.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  6. With a scan tool, request the PPS rezeroing procedure.
  7. Initiate the PPS rezeroing procedure. The PPS will illuminate both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators located on the rearview mirror until the rezeroing procedure has been completed. When the rezeroing procedure has been successfully completed, the PPS will display the current system status at the rearview mirror indicator. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators, located on the rearview mirror, will alternate from no illumination to full illumination in 1-second intervals, for 5 seconds. The PPS will treat an unsuccessful rezero attempt as a system fault.
  8. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful, repeat this procedure. Due to the communication status between the SDM and the PPS module, this procedure may have to be repeated until a successful rezero attempt has been achieved.
  9. After the PPS has been successfully rezeroed, perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(ref-277748-S10358011192008011800000) .

  4. Follow the scan tool on screen instructions.
IMPORTANTWhen replacing a theft deterrent control module with a GM SPO replacement part, the module will learn keys immediately. The existing PCM however, must learn the new fuel continue password when the theft deterrent control module is replaced. When replacing a powertrain control module (PCM) with a GM SPO replacement part, after programming, these modules will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received and a password is learned, a relearn procedure must be performed to change this password again. A PCM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the fuel continue password of the other vehicle theft deterrent control module and will require performing the 10 Minute Re-Learn Procedure to learn the fuel continue password of the current vehicle theft deterrent control module. When performing the 10 Minute Re-Learn Procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from the theft deterrent control module memory. Additional keys may be learned immediately after the 10 Minute Re-Learn Procedure. Refer to Adding Keys . When performing the 10 Minute Re-Learn Procedure, 2 master passkey III+ (PK3+) keys are required. If a gray valet key is learned first, the theft deterrent control module will not allow additional keys to be learned.
  1. Tech 2 diagnostic scan tool
  2. Techline Terminal with current Service Programing System (SPS) software

10 Minute Re-Learn Procedure

Use this procedure after replacing any of the following components

  1. The passkey III+ (PK3+) keys
  2. The theft deterrent control module
  3. The PCM, see Important above
IMPORTANTIf replacing a theft deterrent control module with a GM SPO replacement part, ensure the procedure to set up a new theft deterrent control module has been performed prior to the 10 Minute Re-Learn Procedure.
  1. Connect the Tech 2 diagnostic scan tool to the vehicle.
  2. With the scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programing System and follow the scan tool on screen instructions.
  3. Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect it to a Techline Terminal with current Service Programing System (SPS) software.
  4. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming Systems and follow the Techline Terminal on screen instructions.
  5. Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and re-connect it to the vehicle.
  6. With a master passkey III+ (PK3+) key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  7. With the scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programing System.
  8. At this point, the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10 Minute Re-Learn Procedure.
  9. Observe the SECURITY telltale or the scan tool on screen timer. After approximately 10 minutes the scan tool timer will expire and/or the telltale will turn OFF. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
  10. Turn OFF the ignition and wait 5 seconds.
  11. With a master passkey III+ (PK3+) key, start the vehicle. The theft deterrent control module has now learned the key transponder information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
  12. Turn OFF the ignition and wait 15 seconds minimum.
  13. With a second master passkey III+ (PK3+) key, start the vehicle. The theft deterrent control module has now learned the second master passkey III+ (PK3+) key transponder information.
  14. Learning additional keys, if required. Refer to «Adding Keys»(ref-277774-S16401432012008011800000) .
