Shift Interlock Systems: Removal & Installation Chevrolet Tracker II

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Note. For steering column and related component removal and installation procedures, see appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT or appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.

Removal

  1. Disable the SIR system. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. Remove the following from the floor: The 4 screws (1,6,3,4). (Scheme 2) The 2 plastic retaining clips (2,5). The console box.
  2. Remove the following components from the steering column: The screws. The steering column upper cover. The steering column lower cover.
  3. Remove the bracket retaining screw (2) from the ignition switch. (Scheme 3) Remove the interlock cable (1) from the ignition switch. Remove the interlock cable nut. Remove the interlock cable at the manual selector.
  4. Remove the interlock cable (1) out from under the instrument panel. Remove the interlock cable from under the carpet. Remove the interlock cable from the interlock cable bracket at the manual selector. Inspect the interlock cable for fraying or kinks. Replace the cable as necessary.

Installation

  1. Route the interlock cable under the carpet to the manual selector and under the instrument panel to the ignition switch. Place the manual selector lever in the NEUTRAL position. Turn the ignition switch to ACC position. Install the interlock cable end to the ignition switch (1). (Scheme 3)
  2. Secure the interlock cable end with the bracket retaining screw. Adjust and tighten the screw in order to get the correct tension. Install the steering column upper cover and the steering column lower cover to the steering column. Secure the covers to the steering column with the screws. Install the interlock cable end.
  3. Tighten the interlock cable nut to 115 ft. lbs. (13 N.m). Install the console box to the floor. Secure the console box with 2 plastic retaining clips (2,5) and 4 screws (1,6,3,4). (Scheme 2) Enable the SIR system. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the following items from the floor: The 4 screws (1,6,3,4). (Scheme 2) The 2 plastic retaining clips (2,5). The console box.
  2. Remove the shift lock solenoid electrical connector (3) from under the carpet and disconnect. (Scheme 4) Remove the shift indicator lamp electrical connector. Remove the shift indicator lamp (1). Remove the shift lock solenoid cover (2). Remove the shift lock solenoid (2) from the manual selector.

  1. Install the shift lock solenoid (2) to the manual selector. (Scheme 4) Install the shift lock solenoid cover (2). Connect the shift indicator lamp electrical connector and the shift lock solenoid connector (3) under the carpet. Install the shift indicator lamp (1).
  2. Install the console box to the floor. Secure the console box with the 2 plastic retaining clips (2,5) and the 4 screws (1,6,3,4). (Scheme 2) Connect the negative battery cable.

Disconnect the stop lamp switch connector. Remove the stop lamp switch nut (1) and the stop lamp switch (2). see scheme 2 To install, thread the stop lamp switch (2) to the bracket. Secure with the nut (1). Connect the stop lamp switch connector. Adjust the stop lamp switch. See STOPLAMP SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS.
