SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM (WITH CRUISE CONTROL)
The system consists of the following components
- The shift lock relay.
- The shift lock solenoid.
When the vehicle is in PARK, the transmission range switch is closed and ignition voltage is supplied to the switch of the shift lock relay. When the brake pedal is applied, the stoplamp switch closes and battery voltage is supplied to the coil of the shift lock relay. The coil is grounded and the relay energizes. Grounding point for relay is located at right front shock tower, near horn. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . The energized shift lock relay applies voltage to the shift lock solenoid which energizes and releases the locking tab on the floor shifter.
SHIFT INTERLOCK CONTROL (WITHOUT CRUISE CONTROL)
The system consists of the following components
- The stoplamp switch.
- The shift lock solenoid.
When the vehicle is in PARK, the transmission range switch is closed and ignition voltage is supplied to the stoplamp switch. When the brake pedal is applied, the stoplamp switch closes and battery voltage is applied to the shift lock solenoid which energizes and releases the locking tab on the floor shifter.
SHIFT LOCK CONTROL CABLE
Gearshift lever is locked in Park when ignition switch is in LOCK position. With ignition on, gearshift lever is allowed movement to desired position. Ignition key cannot be removed until gearshift lever is returned to Park. Shift lock control cable is connected between floor shifter and ignition switch.
Intermittents
Inspect all related ground points for being clean and tight. Intermittent faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Inspect wiring for poor connections at BTSI solenoid, PNP switch, shift lock relay and stoplamp switch. Check for bent, backed out, deformed or damaged terminals. Check for weak terminal tension. Check for chafed wires that could short to bare metal or other wiring. Check for broken wire inside insulation. Manipulate wiring harness while observing scan tool or test light for changes in value.
Note. Cable is not adjustable. Manufacturer recommends cable replacement if faulty. See SHIFT LOCK CONTROL CABLE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID
Note. No adjustments are necessary.
STOPLAMP SWITCH
Pull up the brake pedal and hold the pedal in this position. Adjust the stop lamp switch (2). (Scheme 13) The clearance between the end of the thread and the brake pedal stopper (3) should be 1.5-2.0 mm (0.06-0.08 in). Tighten the lock nut to 66.4 INCH lbs. (7.5 N.m).

| WARNING | Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If tools or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components. |
Note. Do not tighten the stop lamp switch nut before adjusting the stop lamp switch.
