Cellular Communication System: Removal & Installation Chevrolet Tahoe II

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the IP trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER»(ref-175346-S38271644542005042000000) .
  2. Lower the front of the headliner. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT»(ref-176028-S13031405502005042900000) .
  3. Disconnect the cable connector (5) from the VIU connector.
  4. Disconnect the inline harness connector (4).
  5. Disconnect the harness connector (2) from the microphone connector.
  6. Disconnect the cable connector (3) from the GPS antenna.
  7. Remove the cable clips from the A-pillar and roof.
  8. Remove the cable assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the cable clips to the A-pillar and roof.
  2. Connect the cable connector (3) to the GPS antenna.
  3. Connect the harness connector (2) to the microphone connector.
  4. Connect the inline harness connector (4).
  5. Connect the cable connector (5) to the VIU connector.
  6. Install the front of the headliner. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT»(ref-176028-S13031405502005042900000) .
  7. Install the IP trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER»(ref-175346-S38271644542005042000000) .
  1. Disconnect the coaxial cable from the cell antenna base.
  2. Remove the cell antenna base from the glass, by using a wide-bladed plastic tool between the glass and the antenna base.
  3. Remove the antenna mast from the outside of the antenna base.
  4. Remove all residue by using a razor blade and isopropyl alcohol.
  1. Clean the glass at the installation location inside and outside with an alcohol wipe.
  2. Install the new antenna base to the outside of the glass so that measurement (a) is 12 mm (0.47 in) and measurement (b) is 215 mm (8.5 in) rearward of the third pillar.
  3. Install the new antenna base to the inside of the glass so that measurement (a) is 12 mm (0.47 in) and measurement (b) is 215 mm (8.5 in) rearward of the third pillar.
  4. Connect the coaxial cable to the cell antenna base.
  1. Lower the headliner. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT»(ref-176028-S13031405502005042900000) .
  2. Disconnect the cables from the antenna.
  3. Loosen the retaining nut till the antenna assembly can be pulled from the top of the roof.
  1. Place the antenna assembly on the roof opening.
  2. Tighten the retaining nut. Tighten: Tighten the nut to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  3. Connect the antenna cables
  4. Install the headliner. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT»(ref-176028-S13031405502005042900000) .
  1. Remove the navigation antenna from the ground plate. Refer to «Navigation Antenna Replacement»(ref-189228-S00774214142005090700000) .
  2. Remove the headliner. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT»(ref-176028-S13031405502005042900000) .
  3. Use a drill bit to drill the head of the rivet (2) out.
  4. Remove the plate (1) from the roof.
  5. Ensure that there are no pieces of metals in the roof to cause rattle while driving.
  1. Install the ground plate to the roof making sure the locking tabs slides into the holes in the roof.
  2. Install a new rivet (2) to retain the ground plate in place.
  3. Install the headliner. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT»(ref-176028-S13031405502005042900000) .
  4. Install the navigation antenna to the ground plate. Refer to «Navigation Antenna Replacement»(ref-189228-S00774214142005090700000) .
  5. Inspect the operation of the Onstar system.
  1. Remove the antenna by sliding it towards the front of the vehicle from the bracket in small increments.
  2. Disconnect the coaxial cable from the antenna.
  3. Remove the antenna from the bracket.
  1. Install the antenna to the bracket in order to connect the coaxial cable.
  2. Connect the coaxial cable to the antenna.
  3. Slide the antenna until it clicks in place.
  1. Remove the dash trim bezel. Refer to «BEZEL REPLACEMENT - IP CLUSTER»(ref-175346-S10239601372005042000000) .
  2. Grasp the OnStar® button assembly (1) and pull outwards to remove the button assembly.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the switches.
  4. Remove the switches and the button assembly (2).
  1. Reconnect the switches and button assembly (2) electrical connectors.
  2. Install the OnStar® button assembly (1) into the dash.
  3. Reinstall the dash trim bezel. Refer to «BEZEL REPLACEMENT - IP CLUSTER»(ref-175346-S10239601372005042000000) .
  1. Remove the IP trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER»(ref-175346-S38271644542005042000000) .
  2. Remove the I/P cluster harness in order to gain access to the VCU bracket screw.
  3. Remove the screw securing the VCU to the bracket.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the VCU from the bracket.
  6. The old VCU must be returned for core credit.
  1. Record the 11-digit ESN from the label on the new VCU module.
  2. Install the VCU to the bracket.
  3. Connect the electrical connectors to the VCU.
  4. Install the screw. Tighten: Tighten the screw to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  5. Install the IP cluster harness.
  6. Install the IP trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER»(ref-175346-S38271644542005042000000) .
  7. Press and hold the white dot button until the OnStar® status LED turns from green to red, and back again to green.
  8. Install a scan tool. Use the ID information menu to access the new ESN.
  9. Move the vehicle to an open area that is away from tall buildings and with a clear view of unobstructed sky. Allow the vehicle to run for 10 minutes.
  10. Press the blue OnStar® button to connect to the OnStar® call center Tell the advisor that this vehicle has received a new VCU. Ask the advisor to add the new ESN to update the customer's account. Follow any additional instructions from the OnStar® advisor. Ask the advisor to activate the OnStar® personal calling feature, if available.
  11. Return the old VCU for core credit.
  1. Remove the IP trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER»(ref-175346-S38271644542005042000000) .
  2. Remove the 2 screws (1) securing the VIU to the bracket.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  4. Remove the VIU from the bracket.
  5. The old VIU must be returned for core credit.
  1. Record the 10-digit STID number from the label on the VIU module.
  2. Install the VIU to the bracket.
  3. Connect the electrical connectors.
  4. Install the screws (1) securing the VIU to the bracket. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  5. Install the IP trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER»(ref-175346-S38271644542005042000000) .
  6. Press and hold the white dot button until the OnStar® status LED turns from green to red, and back again to green.
  7. Install a scan tool. Use the ID information menu to access the new STID number.
  8. Move the vehicle to an open area that is away from tall buildings and with a clear view of unobstructed sky. Allow the vehicle to run for 10 minutes.
  9. Press the blue OnStar® button to connect to the OnStar® call center. Tell the advisor that this vehicle has received a new VIU. Ask the advisor to add the new STID to update the customer's account. Follow any additional instructions from the OnStar® advisor. Ask the advisor to activate the OnStar® personal calling feature, if available.
  1. Remove the overhead console. Refer to «CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD (FULL LENGTH)»(ref-176028-S30376972612005042900000) or «CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD (SHORT LENGTH)»(ref-176028-S16111525432005042900000) .
  2. Disconnect the microphone (2) connector from the jumper harness.
  3. Unclip the microphone bracket (1) from the overhead console.
  4. Disconnect the microphone 2-way connector (2) from the mating 2-way connector.
  1. Mount the microphone (1) to the overhead console at the left rear corner of the overhead console.
  2. Clip the microphone bracket (1) to the overhead console.
  3. Connect the microphone connector (2) to the mating 2-way connector.
  4. Reinstall the overhead console. Refer to «CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD (FULL LENGTH)»(ref-176028-S30376972612005042900000) or «CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD (SHORT LENGTH)»(ref-176028-S16111525432005042900000) .
