Removal
Note. Required Tool: Relay Puller Pliers (J-43244).
- Remove the electrical center cover. Locate the relay. For 2003, see «FUSES & CIRCUIT BREAKERS»(ref-167702) article in ELECTRICAL. For 2004, see «FUSES & CIRCUIT BREAKERS»(ref-167758) article in ELECTRICAL. NOTE: Always note the orientation of the relay. Ensure that the electrical center is secure, as not to put added stress on the wires or terminals.
- Using the Relay Puller Pliers, position the tool on opposing corners of the relay. (Scheme 1) CAUTION: Use the Relay Puller Pliers to pull the relay straight out from the electrical center terminals. The use of pliers or a flat bladed tool could damage the electrical center.
- Remove the relay from the electrical center.

Installation
- Install the relay in the same position as removed.
- Install the electrical center cover.
| WARNING | Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components. |
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
- Raise vehicle. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Record all preset and theft codes from the radio. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Verify that all the electrical components are off such as interior lights, the underhood lamp, etc. Remove the rear battery cover bolts and cover. Disconnect negative battery cable.
- Remove the right transmission cover bolt and cover. (Scheme 2)
- Remove the starter bolts. (Scheme 3) Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.
- Remove the starter solenoid nut. (Scheme 4) Remove the starter lead from the solenoid stud. Remove starter from vehicle through right wheel well opening.
- If necessary, remove the starter shield. (Scheme 5)

Scheme 5
- If necessary, install the starter shield. (Scheme 5) Install starter to vehicle through right wheel well opening.
- Install the starter solenoid lead to the solenoid stud. (Scheme 4) NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. DO NOT use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the starter solenoid nut. Tighten the starter solenoid nut to specification. See «FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168742-S22495615242004111700000).
- Install the starter power lead and nut. Tighten the starter lead nut to specification. See «FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168742-S22495615242004111700000).
- Slide the starter rearward. Install the starter bolts. (Scheme 3) Tighten the starter bolts to specification. See «FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168742-S22495615242004111700000).
- Install the right transmission cover bolt. (Scheme 2) Tighten the transmission cover bolt to specification. See «FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168742-S22495615242004111700000).
- Connect the negative battery cable. Verify that all electrical components are off such as interior lights, the underhood lamp, etc. Clean any corrosion from the negative battery cable using a wire brush. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the cable bolt to specification. See «FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168742-S22495615242004111700000). Install the rear battery cover and nuts. Tighten nuts to specification. See «FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168742-S22495615242004111700000). Lower the vehicle. Reset the radio presets and theft codes..
