Wiper System & Washer System: Removal & Installation Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-278014-S01448585812008012100000) .
  2. Remove the left front wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-278015-S35721287192008012100000) .
  3. Remove the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side (Chevrolet)»(ref-278008-S33611937342008012100000) or «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side (GMC)»(ref-278008-S20399281122008012100000) .
  4. Disconnect the washer pump hoses (1, 2) from the left side fender flange. Refer to «Windshield Washer Hose Replacement»(ref-278010-S37403984922008012100000) .
  5. Drain the windshield washer solvent into a suitable container.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  7. Lower the vehicle in order to access the hood latch.
  8. Open the hood.
  9. Remove the windshield washer solvent cap.
  10. Remove the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped. Refer to «Battery Tray Replacement»(ref-278006-S10360996022008012100000) .
  11. Remove the upper windshield washer container bolt from under the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped.
  12. Remove the upper windshield washer solvent container bolts.
  13. Remove the windshield washer solvent container assembly (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Transfer washer pumps and level indicator to the new washer solvent container.
  2. Install the windshield washer container assembly.
  3. Install the upper windshield washer container bolt to the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped.
  4. Install the upper windshield washer solvent container bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  5. Install the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped. Refer to «Battery Tray Replacement»(ref-278006-S10360996022008012100000) .
  6. Install the windshield washer solvent cap.
  7. Connect the electrical connectors.
  8. Connect the washer pump hoses (1, 2). Refer to «Windshield Washer Hose Replacement»(ref-278010-S37403984922008012100000) .
  9. Install the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side (Chevrolet)»(ref-278008-S33611937342008012100000) or «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side (GMC)»(ref-278008-S20399281122008012100000) .
  10. Install the left front wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-278015-S35721287192008012100000) .
  11. Fill the washer solvent container with windshield solvent. Refer to «Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations»(ref-278026-S09169153392008012100000) .

Scheme 14: Washer Pump Replacement (Silverado)

Preliminary Procedures Remove the windshield washer system container. Refer to Windshield Washer Solvent Container Replacement . Place the washer container on a bench top and secure. Using two flat-bladed tools, pry gently upward on the pump in order to disengage the pump from the washer container grommet. Discard the grommet.
1Windshield Washer Pump Tip: Use full strength windshield washer solvent for a lubricant on the pump spout in order to ease the installation of the new washer pump into the new grommet.

Preliminary Procedures Remove the windshield washer container. Refer to Windshield Washer Solvent Container Replacement . Using two flat-bladed tools placed under the edges of the level indicator pry outward to release the level sensor from the washer container. Discard the level indicator grommet.

Scheme 19: Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (LD)

Preliminary Procedure: Open the hood in order to access and remove the wiper arm assembly.
1Windshield Washer Arm Finish Cap Tip: Use a small flat-bladed tool to remove the finish cap.
2Windshield Washer Arm Nut NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice . Tip: Hold the wiper blade to the vertical black bar target mark located at the lower center portion of the windshield. Tighten: 30 N.m (22 lb ft)
3Windshield Washer Arm Hose Tip: Rotate the hose clockwise around the end of the washer wiper arm upon installation.
4Windshield Washer Arm Assembly Tip: Use the J 39637 . Special Tools: J 39637 Wiper Arm Puller
5Windshield Washer Blade Assembly Tip: Pinch the 2 outer tabs on the arm, rotate the blade rearward and slide the blade forward to release the wiper blade from the wiper arm assembly.

Preliminary Procedure: Open the hood in order to access and remove the wiper arm assembly.
1Windshield Washer Arm Finish Cover Tip: Use a small flat-bladed tool to remove the finish cover.
2Windshield Washer Arm Nut NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice . Procedure Hold the wiper blade tip to the vertical black target mark located at the lower portion of the windshield. Hold the wiper arm in position and torque the nut. Perform a wet wipe and re-check the alignment, adjust if needed. Tighten: 30 N.m (22 lb ft)
3Windshield Washer Arm Hose Tip: Disconnect the washer hose from the air inlet grille panel connection.
4Windshield Washer Arm Assembly Tip: Use the J 39637 Wiper Arm Remover Tool.
5Windshield Washer Blade Assembly Tip: Pinch the 2 outer tabs on the arm, rotate the blade rearward and slide the blade forward to release the wiper blade from the wiper arm assembly.

Scheme 23: Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Replacement

1Rain Sensor Module Trim Cover Procedure: Gently pry the trim cover outward in order to remove the cover from the rain sensor module.
2Electrical Connector Procedure: Disconnect the electrical connector.
3Rain Sensor Module and Retainer Clips Procedure Disengage the retaining clips from the mounting bracket on the windshield. Disengage the rain sensor lens from the module by disengaging the retainer clips. Clean the windshield where the old conductive jell residue is present. Tip: The rain sensor bracket is not serviced separately. The windshield will need to be replaced if the rain sensor bracket is loose or has been damaged.

Scheme 24: Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Lens Replacement

Procedure: Remove the rain sensor module from the windshield bracket. Refer to Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Replacement .
1Windshield Moisture Sensor Procedure Wearing latex rubber gloves, hold the moisture sensor in the left or right hand. Release the 3 clips securing the lens to the sensor. Be careful when disengaging the sensor and the lens cover, keep the sensor electronics free from any dirt, debris or foreign material while open. Discard the old moisture sensor lens.

3Windshield Moisture Sensor Lens Cover Procedure Remove the old conductive jell residue from the windshield mounting bracket. Clean the area of the windshield that contacts the windshield moisture sensor lens with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water by volume on a dampened lint free cloth. Align and secure the two sensor halves back as one unit. Remove the plastic protective covering from the lens. Position and install the moisture sensor back onto the windshield bracket. Connect the electrical cover. Secure the rain sensor module trim cover.
