Diagnostic Starting Point - Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control
Begin the system diagnosis with the Diagnostic System Check - Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information
- The identification of the control modules which command the system
- The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit
- The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status
The use of the Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.
Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
- 2: Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.
- 4: Checks for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the BCM and the PCM.
- 5: The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed.

Circuit Description
The body control module (BCM) controls the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid ground circuit and monitors the voltage of the ground control circuit.
Conditions for Running the DTC
The control ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid must be OFF.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
- The body control module (BCM) detects the controlled ground circuit voltage is approximately equal to ground in the OFF state.
- The condition above must be present for more than 0.3 seconds.
- This DTC will be set after 20 seconds due to possible false failures.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The BCM stores DTC B2712 in memory.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- A current DTC B2712 will clear if the short to ground or open in the controlled ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is no longer detected by the body control module (BCM).
- A history DTC B2712 will clear after 100 consecutive ignition cycles if the condition for the malfunction is no longer present.
- A scan tool may be used to clear the DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
- If DTC B2712 is a history DTC, the fault may be intermittent. Refer to «Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/body-electrical/#wiring-systems-introduction__testing-for-intermittent-conditions-and-poor) in Wiring Systems.
- The following conditions may cause an intermittent malfunction to occur: An intermittent short to ground or open in the controlled ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid coil is intermittently shorted to ground internally. The body control module (BCM) is intermittently shorted to ground internally.

- 2: Listen for an audible click when the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid operates. Command both the ON and OFF states. Repeat the commands as necessary.

DTC B2712
The body control module (BCM) controls the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid ground circuit and monitors the voltage of the ground control circuit.
The controlled ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid must be ON.
- The body control module (BCM) detects the controlled ground circuit voltage is approximately equal to battery voltage in the ON state.
- The condition above must be present for more than 0.3 seconds.
- This DTC will be set after 20 seconds due to possible false failures.
The BCM stores DTC B2713 in memory.
- The body control module (BCM) determines that the controlled ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is no longer shorted to battery voltage.

Shift Lever Can Be Moved without Brake Pedal Depressed
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/body-electrical/#battery-charging-system-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the center console. Refer to «Console Replacement - Front Floor (Impala)»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) or «Console Replacement - Front Floor (Monte Carlo)»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
- Disconnect the automatic shift lock actuator electrical connector.
- Remove the automatic shift lock actuator from the pivot point (1), the base of the shift lock control and the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the automatic shift lock actuator to the base of the shift lock control and the pivot point (1).
- Connect the automatic shift lock actuator electrical connector.
- Install the center console. Refer to «Console Replacement - Front Floor (Impala)»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) or «Console Replacement - Front Floor (Monte Carlo)»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/body-electrical/#battery-charging-system-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the knee bolster bracket. Refer to «Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement - Left»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
- Disconnect the automatic shift lock actuator electrical connector.
- Remove the actuator from the steering column ball studs.
- Install the automatic shift lock control actuator to the steering column ball studs.
- Connect the automatic shift lock actuator electrical connector.
- Place the column in the neutral position.
- Adjust the automatic shift lock control actuator. Pull out the tab (1) on the adjuster block side (2) of the actuator. Press on the adjuster block (2) in order to compress the internal adjuster spring and disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block as far away from the actuator as possible. Lock in place by pushing in on the tab (1).
- Inspect the actuator. The actuator must lock the shift lever clevis when you place the clevis in the park position. If you can move the shift lever without pressing on the brake pedal, readjust the actuator.
- Install the knee bolster bracket. Refer to «Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement - Left»(/chevrolet/monte-carlo/vi-1999-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components
- The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
- The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
- The body control module (BCM)
- The powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The BCM provides a ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid when the transmission is in the PARK position. The BCM receives the transmission gear position information via class2 serial data from the PCM. This causes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to energize and lock the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open. This causes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. The BCM turns off the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid ground circuit when the transmission is out of the PARK position.
