Heater System: Removal & Installation Chevrolet Metro I

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Disconnect blower motor and blower motor resistor wiring harness connectors. Disconnect fresh/recirculated air control cable from blower motor case.
  2. Remove 3 bolts and blower motor case from vehicle. Disconnect air hose from blower case. Remove 3 screws attaching blower motor to blower case. Remove blower motor from blower case. Remove clip and remove fan from blower motor shaft.
  3. Look into blower motor opening and inspect the recirculation door rubber. Replace recirculation door if signs of wear are noticed. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Disconnect blower motor resistor electrical connector. Remove screw and remove blower motor resistor from blower motor case. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove heater control panel. See HEATER CONTROL PANEL. Remove blower speed selector switch from heater control panel. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove lower covers from left side of instrument panel. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Remove 4 screws and instrument cluster trim bezel.
  2. Open glove box and disconnect radio and antenna connectors from rear of radio. Remove ashtray, 4 screws, and center console trim bezel from instrument panel. Remove 4 screws from face plate, one screw through ashtray opening, and pull out radio.
  3. Remove knobs from heater control panel levers. Remove one screw and right side instrument panel cluster lower cover. Gently pry out heater face plate. Remove heater face plate bulb socket and A/C switch (if equipped). Remove 3 heater control cables from heater case and blower case. Remove 2 screws and push heater control panel further inside instrument panel. Remove electrical harness connector. Pull heater control panel from instrument panel through radio opening.
  4. To install, reverse remove procedure. Adjust heater control cables. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-244-S14118438362000030800000) .

Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Drain coolant from cooling system. Disconnect heater hoses in engine compartment. Disconnect all necessary cables and ducts from heater case. Remove blower case to heater case duct. Remove heater case from vehicle. Remove screws and clips from heater case. Separate heater case into halves (if necessary). Remove heater core from case. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. Pull out glove box while pushing on stopper from both sides. Remove 2 glove box attaching screws and glove box. Remove 3 attaching bolts, electrical connectors, and remove PCM.
  2. Remove gearshift control lever upper boot from console (manual transaxle only). Remove 6 screws and console from vehicle. Remove ashtray. Remove 4 center console trim bezel attaching screws. Disconnect cigarette lighter electrical connector and remove center console trim bezel. Remove screws and cup holder. Remove 5 radio attaching screws, disconnect 2 electrical connectors, and remove radio.
  3. Remove heater control panel. See «HEATER CONTROL PANEL»(ref-244-S19012835002000030800000) . Remove 2 screws and hood latch release handle. Remove knee bolster. Remove air bag module from steering wheel. Remove steering wheel nut and washer. Mark position of steering wheel on shaft, and remove steering wheel using puller.
  4. Loosen 2 upper steering column mounting bolts and lower column. Remove screw and left side instrument cluster lower cover. Remove 4 screws and instrument cluster bezel. Disconnect speedometer cable by pushing on plastic tab. Remove 4 screws, 3 electrical connectors, and instrument cluster. Remove passenger's air bag module.
  5. Disconnect all electrical connectors from both sides of instrument panel. Disconnect antenna cable hold-down loops. Unclip and remove left and right "A" pillar trim covers. Remove 7 bolts securing instrument panel center brace. Note that 2 bolts are located on each door jam "A" pillar area, 2 bolts are located at bottom center of instrument panel, and another is near steering column mounting area.
  6. Remove one cover, one screw and upper center of instrument panel. Remove 2 screws, and lower left and right corners of instrument panel. Remove instrument panel from vehicle.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten air bag module screws and steering wheel hub nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Activate air bag system and ensure air bag system is functioning properly. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.
