DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

Power mirror system consists of power mirror direction switch (left, right, up and down), power mirror selector switch (left, off, and right), driver's side outside power mirror, passenger's side outside power mirror and POWER MIRROR fuse (10-amp). Each outside power mirror contains 2 motors. Vertical motor operates up and down directions and horizontal motor operates left and right directions. Each power mirror motor is protected by a internal circuit breaker.

Power mirror switch receives battery voltage through POWER MIRROR fuse (10-amp). Power mirror switch also receives a constant ground. Four positions of direction switch have dual switch contacts. Each contact is connected to opposing sides of appropriate power mirror motor through selector switch. Selector switch interrupts or completes these circuits depending on position of selector switch. Circuits remain open in center off position.

If selector switch is placed in left position and up switch is depressed, battery voltage will be supplied to all 4 power mirror motors through left mirror motor left control circuit and right mirror motor left control circuit. Return path is completed only for left mirror through left mirror motor down control circuit, through power mirror switch to ground. Mirror will move up. If down switch is depressed, battery voltage will be supplied to all 4 power mirror motors through left mirror motor left control circuit and right mirror motor left control circuit. Return path is completed only for left mirror through left mirror motor right control circuit, through power mirror switch to ground. Mirror will move down. Remainder of mirror functions operate in a similar manner as described above. Pressing power mirror switch in opposing positions, left and right or up and down, will reverse polarity to selected mirror motor, utilizing same circuits and power mirror will move in opposite direction.
