PROGRAMMING
| CAUTION | Before attempting to program a control module, ensure vehicle battery is fully charged. Ensure a battery charger is not connected to vehicle battery and ignition switch is in proper position according to procedure. DO NOT change position of ignition switch during programming procedure unless instructed to do so. |
Note. DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed here by a service procedure. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer concern.
Note. Body Control Module (BCM) stores information regarding vehicle options. If BCM is not properly configured, BCM may not control all features properly. Before attempting BCM programming, ensure battery is fully charged.
Ensure battery is fully charged. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS from main menu. Select NEW BCM SETUP and follow instructions on scan tool. If BCM fails to accept program, check BCM harness connectors and ensure scan tool has latest software version.
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
To program Powertrain Control Module (PCM), see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
RADIO
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select DIAGNOSTICS from main menu. At vehicle identification screen, select "1" for 2001 model year, then PASSENGER CAR. At system selection menu, select BODY.
- At vehicle identification screen, select "N" for body type. At body screen, select RADIO. At radio screen, select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
- At special functions screen, select RADIO SETUP. At radio setup screen, select ENTER (Following test will setup a new or existing radio).
- Select one of possible Regular Production Options (RPO) using arrow keys. RPO code label is located on spare tire cover. Select USA/CANADA then press ENTER.
- Scan tool should display TEST IN PROGRESS. After scan tool displays TEST COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY, press EXIT. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM
If replacing a BCM with a replacement part, BCM must be programmed with the proper configurations before programming theft deterrent system. Once BCM is configured properly, it will learn Passlock(tm) sensor data code immediately. Existing PCM must learn new fuel continue password when BCM is replaced.
If replacing a PCM with a replacement part, after programming, these modules will learn incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. A PCM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn current vehicle's password.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position.
- Attempt to start engine, then release ignition key to ON position (vehicle will not start).
- Observe SECURITY telltale. After approximately 10 minutes, SECURITY telltale will turn off.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and wait 5 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1 - 4 2 more times for a total of 3 cycles in 30 minutes. Vehicle is now ready to relearn Passlock(tm) sensor data code and/or passwords on next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK position.
- Start engine. Vehicle has now learned Passlock(tm) sensor data code and/or password.
- Using scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed.
Code Enable Criteria
Ignition switch must be in ON position. DTC B1000 will set if an internal memory error, internal EEPROM checksum error, internal EEPROM write error or internal voltage regulator error exists.
Battery voltage must be 9-16 volts and radio must be switched from off to on. DTC B1001 will set if radio is from a different vehicle platform or if correct setup information was not entered using scan tool when replacing BCM.
Ignition switch must be in ON position. DTC B1001 will set if BCM is not configured properly from factory or when replaced.
Ignition switch must be in ON position for at least 20 seconds. DTC B1369 will set if ignition 0 input circuit is inactive after ignition 1 input has been active for 20 seconds.
Engine must be running for at least 20 seconds. DTC B1374 will set if ignition 1 input circuit is inactive after engine has been running for 20 seconds.
Ignition switch must be in ON position for at least 20 seconds. DTC B1379 will set if ignition 3 input circuit is inactive after ignition 1 input has been active for 20 seconds.
Battery voltage must be 9-16 volts and radio must be switched from off to on. DTC B1780 will set if a radio is installed from a different vehicle or if correct VIN information was not entered using scan tool when replacing BCM.
Ignition switch must be in ON position. Headlight switch must be in PARK or HEAD position. DTC B2532 will set if foglight relay control circuit is open or shorted to ground for 5 seconds.
Ignition switch must be in ON position. Headlight switch must be in PARK or HEAD position. DTC B2533 will set if foglight relay control circuit is shorted to battery voltage for 250 milliseconds.
For DTC B2558 to set, at least one door must be open, or interior lights must be commanded on by BCM and interior light control circuit is shorted to battery voltage for 125 milliseconds.
For DTC B2575 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position and ambient light sensor must sense a dark condition. DTC B2575 will set when ALC headlight relay control circuit is open for 5 seconds or more.
For DTC B2577 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position and ambient light sensor must sense a light condition. DTC B2577 will set when ALC headlight relay control circuit is shorted to ground for 5 seconds or more.
For DTC B2578 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position and ambient light sensor must sense a dark condition. DTC B2578 will set when ALC headlight relay control circuit is shorted to voltage for one second or more.
For DTC B2585 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position and ambient light sensor must sense a dark condition. DTC B2585 will set if parking light relay control circuit is open or shorted to voltage for 5 seconds, or if parking light relay output circuit is open, shorted to ground or shorted to battery for 5 seconds. A faulty underhood junction block can also cause DTC B2585 to set.
For DTC B2587 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position and ambient light sensor must sense a light condition. DTC B2587 will set if parking light relay control circuit is open or shorted to ground for 5 seconds with ALC not operating and headlights not in park position.
DTC B2588 will set when ignition switch is in ON position, ambient light sensor senses a dark condition and parking light relay control circuit is shorted to voltage for 1 second.
For DTC B2600 to set, headlight switch must be off, parking brake cannot be applied and transaxle must be in gear. DTC B2600 will set when DRL relay control and/or output circuit(s) are open, either headlight power circuit is open or DRL relay ground circuit is open.
For DTC B2601 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position, headlight switch must be off and transaxle must be in Park. DTC B2601 will set when headlight feedback is present for 5 seconds and BCM is not commanding DRL relay on.
For DTC B2602 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position and transaxle must be in Park. DTC B2602 will set when DRL relay control circuit is shorted to ground without being grounded by BCM.
DTC B2603 will set when ignition switch is in ON position, transaxle range switch is not in Park, DRL option is configured, DRL relay output is active and DRL feedback does not exist for 5 seconds.
DTC B2647 will set when Automatic Lighting Control (ALC) option is enabled, ignition is on, and ambient light sensor circuits are open or shorted to ground for more than 5 seconds.
DTC B2648 will set when Automatic Lighting Control (ALC) option is enabled, ignition switch is in ON position, and ambient light sensor signal is more than 5 volts.
For DTC U1000 or U1255 to set, vehicle power mode (ignition switch position) requires serial data communication to occur and voltage supply to modules should be 9-16 volts. DTC will set when a module does not associate an identification number with at least one critical parameter within about 5 seconds of beginning serial data communication.
For DTC U1001-U1254 to set, vehicle power mode (ignition switch position) requires serial data communication to occur and voltage supply to modules should be 9-16 volts. DTC will set when a message from a learned identification number has not been detected for the past 5 seconds.
For DTC U1300 to set, vehicle power mode (ignition switch position) requires serial data communication to occur and voltage supply to module should be 9-16 volts. DTC will set when a no valid messages are detected on class 2 serial data circuit and voltage level detected on class 2 serial data circuit is low for at least 3 seconds.
For DTC U1301 to set, vehicle power mode (ignition switch position) requires serial data communication to occur and voltage supply to module should be 9-16 volts. DTC will set when a no valid messages are detected on class 2 serial data circuit and voltage level detected on class 2 serial data circuit is high for at least 3 seconds.
For DTC U2000-U2007 to set, ignition switch must be in ON position.
DTC U2000 will set when IPC determines data from BCM is invalid for 12 seconds. DTC U2001 will set when BCM determines data from IPC is invalid for 5 seconds. DTC U2002 will set when BCM detects SPI serial data in circuit is less than 1.2 volt for 5 seconds. DTC U2003 will set when BCM detects SPI serial data in circuit is more than 4.5 volts for 5 seconds. DTC U2004 will set when BCM detects SPI serial data out circuit is less than 1.2 volt for 5 seconds. DTC U2005 will set when BCM detects SPI serial data out circuit is more than 4.5 volts for 5 seconds. DTC U2006 will set when BCM detects SPI serial data clock circuit is less than 1.2 volt for 5 seconds. DTC U2007 will set when BCM detects SPI serial data clock circuit is more than 4.5 volts for 5 seconds.
SYSTEM TESTS
Note. Do not replace Body Control Module (BCM) unless a DTC remains current after all DTC repairs have been performed. Do not replace BCM if only history DTCs are set.
