DESCRIPTION

Note. Body Control Module (BCM) may also be referred to as Body Function Controller (BFC).

Body Control Module (BCM) controls operation of Daytime Running Lights (DRL), automatic lamp control and foglights. BCM monitors available light levels through an ambient light sensor to determine when to energize automatic lamp control relay.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS - HANDLING

CAUTIONWhen handling Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) sensitive electronic parts (control modules), take special care to avoid damaging components.
  1. Discharge personal static electricity by momentarily touching metal grounding point on vehicle before touching electronic components.
  2. DO NOT touch terminals on components or connectors with fingers or metal tools. When unplugging connectors, DO NOT let metal tool contact any exposed terminal.
  3. Never jumper, ground, or use test probes on components or connectors unless specified in diagnosis. Always connect ground lead first.
  4. DO NOT remove solid-state components from protective packaging until ready for installation. Touch packaging to ground before opening.
  5. DO NOT bump or drop components. DO NOT put component on metal work bench, metal objects, or electrically operated components (such as radio, TV, or oscilloscope).

TROUBLE SHOOTING

  1. Check RH HDLP fuse (15-amp), LH HDLP fuse (15-amp) and HTR A/C IGN fuse (10-amp) in underhood wiring harness junction block. If foglights do not operate properly, check FOG LPS fuse (10-amp) in right instrument panel wiring harness junction block.
  2. Using scan tool, check for BCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If any BCM DTCs are set, see «BODY CONTROL MODULES»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-1996-2000/remont/body-cab-control-systems/#body-control-module) article.
  3. If one headlight or foglight does not work, check bulb, connections and related wiring. See appropriate wiring diagram in HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS article. Ensure all ground connections are clean and tight.
  4. Check for poor connections or partially broken wire inside of insulation which could cause an intermittent. Check for proper installation of aftermarket electronic equipment.

SYSTEM TESTING

WARNINGBefore servicing instrument panel components on vehicles with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, disable SIR system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
