Programming and Setup - All Systems Chevrolet Cobalt I

Service Programming System (SPS)

For step by step programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

IMPORTANTDO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer's concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle's battery. Incorrect system voltage or voltage fluctuations from a battery charger, may cause programming failure or control module damage. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle's battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL) - Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's manual. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
  2. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  3. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The control module Serial Data Link Tester The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
  4. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
  5. DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

Audio Amplifier Programming and Setup

There is no setup procedure that needs to be performed for the amplifier on this vehicle.

Body Control Module Programming and Setup

Each of the following courses of action requires a setup or programming procedure before the body control module (BCM) can be put into normal service.

Body Control Module (BCM) Replacement

If the BCM is replaced, the following procedures must be performed in the subsequent order

  1. BCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/communication-devices/#computerintegrating-systems__body-control-module-bcm-programmingrpo-configuration) in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.
  2. Theft Learn-Refer to «Programming Theft Deterrent System Components»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#theft-deterrent-system) in Theft Deterrent.

Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) Replacement

If the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. BCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/communication-devices/#computerintegrating-systems__body-control-module-bcm-programmingrpo-configuration) in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.
  2. Theft Learn-Refer to «Programming Theft Deterrent System Components»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#theft-deterrent-system) in Theft Deterrent.

Body Control Module (BCM) Reprogramming

If the BCM is reprogrammed, the following procedures must be performed

  1. BCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/communication-devices/#computerintegrating-systems__body-control-module-bcm-programmingrpo-configuration) in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.
  2. Theft Learn-Refer to «Programming Theft Deterrent System Components»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#theft-deterrent-system) in Theft Deterrent.

Theft Deterrent Programming

If the BCM or the powertrain control module (PCM) is replaced the programming for the replaced module must be performed before the programming of the theft deterrent system. Refer to the following

  1. BCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/communication-devices/#computerintegrating-systems__body-control-module-bcm-programmingrpo-configuration) in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.
  2. PCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .

Communication Interface Module (OnStar) Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.

Communication Interface Module Replacement

If the OnStar® communication interface module is replaced, the setup procedure needs to be performed. Please refer to OnStar Reconfiguration (Gen 5) or OnStar Reconfiguration (Gen 6.1) in Cellular Communication.

Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.

Radio Replacement

If the digital radio receiver is replaced, the following procedure must be performed

Perform the digital radio receiver setup. Refer to Digital Radio Receiver Setup in Entertainment.

EBCM Replacement

If the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is replaced it must be programmed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

EBCM Reprogramming

If the EBCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Engine Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. ECM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Learn-Refer to «CKP System Variation Learn Procedure»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-22l-introduction__ckp-system-variation-learn-procedure) in Engine Controls.

ECM Reprogramming

If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to CKP System Variation Learn Procedure .

  1. Engine replacement
  2. Any engine repair that disturbs the CKP sensor or it's relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
  3. CKP sensor

Heated Seat Control Module Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Ignition Control Module Programming and Setup

This module does not require that a programming event or a setup event is performed.

Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module Programming and Setup

IMPORTANTThe air bag indicator light may remain ON after the body control module (BCM), or sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is replaced, and during the programming procedure for the BCM until after the procedure is completed, and the ignition key is cycled OFF and ON.

If the SDM is replaced you must perform the BCM reprogramming procedure in order for the BCM to relearn the new SDM ID. Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration .

Instrument Panel Cluster Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Power Steering Control Module Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Powertrain Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement

If the powertrain control module (PCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. PCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Learn-Refer to «CKP System Variation Learn Procedure»(/chevrolet/cobalt/i-2004-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-22l-introduction__ckp-system-variation-learn-procedure) in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).

PCM Reprogramming

If the PCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a crankshaft position (CKP) variation learn procedure must be performed. Refer to CKP System Variation Learn Procedure in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).

  1. Engine replacement
  2. Any engine repair that disturbs the crankshaft position CKP sensor or its relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
  3. CKP sensor

Radio Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.

If the radio is replaced, the new radio must have the setup procedure performed. Refer to Radio Setup in Entertainment.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup

The following procedure must be performed when replacing the remote control door lock receiver module.

Transmitter Programming in Keyless Entry

Sunroof Control Module Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

TCM Programming Procedures

  1. The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
  2. Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
  3. If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
