Diagnostic Starting Point - Wiper/Washer Systems

Begin the system diagnosis by reviewing the system Description and Operation. Reviewing the Description and Operation information will help you determine the correct symptom diagnostic procedure when a malfunction exists. Reviewing the Description and Operation information will also help you determine if the condition described by the customer is normal operation. Refer to Symptoms - Wiper/Washer Systems in order to identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Symptoms - Wiper/Washer Systems

Important: Refer to the system description and operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to Wiper/Washer System Description and Operation .

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the Wiper/Washer System. Refer to «CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/electrical-component-locations/#wiring-systems-general-information__checking-aftermarket-accessories) .
  2. Inspect the easily accessible system components for obvious damage or for conditions which could cause the symptom.
  3. Ensure that all mechanical components are operative before diagnosing the electrical portion of the system.

Intermittent

Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT AND POOR CONNECTIONS .

Symptom List

Refer to a symptom diagnostic procedure from the following list in order to diagnose the symptom

  1. «Washers Always On»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system)
  2. «Washers Inoperative»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system)
  3. «Wipers Always On»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system)

Test Description

The numbers below Refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 5. This step tests for continuity through the 390 ohm resistor in the windshield wiper/washer switch.
  2. 6. This step tests for continuity through the delay resistors in the windshield wiper/washer switch. The measured resistance will change in sequence from low to high as the delay speed is increased.

Wiper Chatter Repair

Some vehicles may exhibit a condition where the windshield wipers chatter and/or wipe unevenly. Several items may contribute to this condition. To completely repair this condition, ALL of the items listed should be tested and repaired as necessary.

  1. Perform the wiper arm pressure test. Refer to «Wiper Arm Tip Pressure Check»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system__wiper-arm-tip-pressure-check) .
  2. Inspect the wiper blade element set. Refer to «Wiper Blade Element Check»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system__wiper-blade-element-check) .
  3. Clean the wiper blade elements. Refer to «Blade Element Cleaning»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system__blade-element-cleaning) .
  4. Clean the windshield glass. Refer to «Windshield Glass Cleaning»(/chevrolet/chevy-express-h2500/2003-2003/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system__windshield-glass-cleaning) .

Windshield Glass Cleaning

Clean the windshield with windshield cleaner, GM P/N 1050011 (Canadian P/N 992727) or equivalent. The cleaner should not harm the paint finish or scratch the glass. The glass is clean when the water no longer beads, but sheets across the entire glass surface.

Blade Element Cleaning

Lift each blade assembly off of the windshield and clean the element with a cloth saturated with full strength washer solvent. Then rinse the blade assemblies with water.

Windshield Wiper/Washer System Components

The windshield wiper/washer system consists of the following components

  1. Windshield wiper/washer switch
  2. Windshield wiper motor
  3. Windshield washer pump
  4. Windshield washer relay
  5. FRT WIPER 25A fuse
  6. W/S WASH 15A fuse

Wiper/Washer System Operation

The windshield wiper motor module is part of the windshield wiper motor cover and controls the windshield wiper motor and washer pump operation. The windshield wiper motor is a 2 speed motor and is operated at low speed in all modes except HIGH. The accessory voltage supply circuit to the windshield wiper motor provides the power for operating the wiper motor and the wiper motor module.

The windshield wiper switch supply voltage circuit is a 12-volt reference from the wiper motor module to the wiper/washer switch. The WASH, MIST, LOW, and DELAY modes are controlled by the windshield wiper/washer switch through a series of internal resistors, and the switch position determines the point on the resistor assembly where the reference voltage is applied. The windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit supplies the signal voltage from the switch assembly to the wiper motor module which determines the operating mode.

Windshield wiper motor high speed operation is controlled by the windshield wiper/washer switch through the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit. The windshield wiper switch high signal circuit is supplied 12 volts by the wiper motor module and when the wiper/washer switch is turned to the HIGH position the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit is grounded. The windshield washer pump is controlled by the wiper motor module through the windshield washer relay. The windshield washer relay coil and switch is supplied battery positive voltage, and during WASH mode the wiper motor module grounds the washer relay control circuit energizing the relay. While the relay coil is energized battery positive voltage to the switch side of the relay is supplied to the washer pump control circuit.
