- 3M 07502 3M Scotch Brite Adhesive and Stripe Removal Disk
Scheme 16
Scheme 17
- Apply masking tape to the body side border of the molding in order to protect the body from scratches. The tape will also aid in aligning the molding during installation.
- Use the J 41409 or a 0.8 mm (0.03 in) fishing line in order to cut through the adhesive material.
Important: In order to ensure a good replacement of new or old adhesive retained molding, verify that the panel surface temperature is approximately 24-41°C (80-105°F), and the panel surface is clean and free of any wax or oily film. If you will be painting the molding, do not bake the molding. Doing this will distort the part, making the part useless.
- Use a general purpose adhesive remover or 3M 07502 3M P/N 7502, attached to a drill. You can also use a 5-8 cm (2-3 in) square rubber or felt block. Use the cleaners in order to remove all traces of adhesive from the body panel.
- Clean the affected panel area with wax and grease remover, and wipe with isopropyl alcohol.
- Use the J 25070 or a heat lamp in order to warm the body panel to 24-41°C (80-105°F).
- Make a trial fitting of the piece to the vehicle, checking the alignment and all the gaps and the clearances. Do this before you remove the plastic backing. Important: Do not distort the part during the installation. The part may take a temporary set to the distorted shape and appear to have the proper adhesion, but the part will spring back to the original shape and cause a loss of adhesion.
- Once you are satisfied with the trial fit, peel the backing from all of the tape. Set the top row of tape first, and work down the panel to the other rows of tape. Important: Once the molding is set into place, do not attempt to remove the panel. This will destroy the adhesive strips and could lead to part distortion and damage.
- Hand roll the molding to the body in order to ensure proper adhesion. A shop towel rolled into a ball and held in the palm of your fist will aid in applying a consistent, evenly distributed pressure to the panel.

Important: Stripes and decals adhere to a painted surface using pressure sensitive adhesive. The use of a wetting solution aids the technician in lifting and positioning the stripe or decal during installation. A wetting solution also ensures a better bond between stripe or decal and panel. Stripe or decal replacement involving collision damage, or damage to underlying painted surface, requires that metal repair and/or refinish operations be completed before the stripe or decal is installed. Freshly painted surfaces must be allowed to dry thoroughly before installing stripe or decal. Residual solvents in fresh painted surfaces can lead to subsequent blistering problems if stripe or decal is applied before complete release of solvents. The striping material highlights vehicle surface imperfection. All dings, rough metal, paint defects and uneven two-tone paint breaklines mu
- Body surfaces and decals must be maintained between 21 to 38°C (70 to 100°F) during installation.
- Never apply decals when body surface and decal temperatures are below 21°C (70°F).
- Stripes and decals may be applied dry. If this does not result in a consistent bubble free application, the "wet" method must be used as in the case of large graphics packages.
- Stripes or decals that are applied on flexible surfaces (fascias, etc.) must be applied using the WET method. This will reduce the formation of bubbles under the decal due to the outgassing potential of the flexible materials.

- Remove all traces of adhesive residue from painted surfaces with a Varnish Makers and Painters (VM&P) naphtha.
| CAUTION | To prevent possible vehicle, stripe or decal damage, always refer to manufacturer's packaged instructions. |
| CAUTION | Striping material highlights vehicle surface imperfection. All dings, rough metal, paint defects and uneven two-tone paint breaklines must be eliminated before stripe/decal application. Freshly painted surfaces must be allowed to dry thoroughly before installing stripe or decal. Residual solvents in fresh painted surfaces can lead to subsequent blistering problems if stripe or decal is applied before complete release of solvents. |
- Prepare the surface. If the area where stripe or decal is to be applied has been refinished, remove any imperfections that would show through stripe or decal. CAUTION: Use of harsh chemicals when cleaning can damage exterior lamps. Suggested cleaners are a mild soap and water, or Varnish Makers and Painters (VM&P) Naptha. VM&P Naptha is a specific type of naptha and should not be substituted by any other naptha.
- Clean the painted surface with Varnish Makers and Painters (VM&P) naphtha.
- Clean the area where the stripe or decal will be applied with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water.
- Wipe the panel surface with a clean cloth while solvent is still wet and allow to dry.
- Apply the wetting solution to area where stripe or decal is to be installed.
- Remove the backing material of the stripe or decal as necessary. Do not touch the adhesive backing of the stripes or decal.
- Put the wetting solution on adhesive side of the stripe or decal. The wetting solution will allow movement of the stripe or decal for proper positioning.
- Apply the stripe or decal to the panel.
- Working from center where possible, squeegee the stripe or decal into position. Application of additional wetting solution may be necessary to ease the installation of stripe or decal. Application of soapy wetting solution on top side of stripe or decal will ease pull of squeegee on stripe or decal and help to eliminate damage to it.
- Apply heat to the stripe or decal at recessed areas. Press stripe or decal into the recess to obtain firm bond.
- Inspect the stripe or decal from critical angle using adequate light reflection to detect any irregularities that may have developed during installation.
- Remove all air bubbles by piercing with a safety pin, needle, or tool with same size piercing tip. Pierce bubble on its outer edge and force air out from opposite edge with blade of squeegee. Never use razor blade or knife edge.
- Install previously removed parts.
- Clean panel as require.
Adhesive Retained Molding and Emblem Description
Some trim items and name plates mount to the body with retainers and nuts. Most of these name plates are adhesive retained.
When you replace adhesive retained moldings, apply these moldings in an environment free of dust and dirt. The dirt and dust may come in contact with the adhesive backing and prevent proper adhesion.
