ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

Note. For repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.

Engine may be identified by Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine block code or partial VIN.

VIN is stamped on a metal pad located near lower left corner of windshield. Eighth character of VIN identifies engine model ("S" indicates 3.4L SFI engine). Tenth character of VIN identifies model year ("S" indicates 1995 model year).

Partial VIN (9 characters) is stamped on left side of cylinder block, at cylinder block-to-transmission flange. (Scheme 1) First character of partial VIN identifies manufacturer. Refer to the PARTIAL VIN table. Second character identifies model year ("S" indicates 1995 model year).

VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

Remove rocker arm covers. Rotate crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Begin by adjusting exhaust valve of cylinder No. 1. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE table. While trying to rotate push rod with thumb and forefinger, loosen nut on rocker stud until push rod just starts to rotate. This is considered zero lash. Tighten nut 1 1/2 turns (this centers the lifter plunger).

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. To trouble shoot engine mechanical components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

GENERAL PRECAUTION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Note. For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removal. Also place mating marks on engine hood and other major assemblies before removal.

FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE

Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen fuel tank filler cap. Connect Fuel Pressure Gauge (J-34730-1) to fuel line fitting (wrap shop towel around fitting to absorb leakage). Place gauge bleed hose into container. Open bleed valve to release pressure.

Note. Remove, engine, transmission, and engine frame as an assembly through bottom of engine compartment.

Removal & Installation

  1. Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__fuel-pressure-release) . Remove air cleaner assembly and duct. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Drain cooling system. Drain engine oil. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Remove torque converter bolts (A/T). Remove front fascia lower deflectors.
  2. Remove front suspension stabilizer bar. Remove serpentine drive belt. Disconnect transmission fluid lines from radiator (A/T). Disconnect control cables, coolant hoses, electrical connectors, vacuum hoses, and fuel lines as necessary. Remove drive shaft (mark for installation reference).
  3. Remove torque arm from transmission. Disconnect steering shaft from steering gear. Lower vehicle. Remove fuel rail. Remove "Y" brace from right exhaust manifold. Remove alternator and A/C compressor bracket (leave A/C hoses attached). Disconnect brakelines from combination valve and ABS hydraulic modulator as necessary.
  4. Working under right side of instrument panel, remove right kick panel (floor trim piece). Disconnect 3 main harness connectors (Blue, Black, and White). Disconnect evaporator temperature sensor electrical connector. Working in engine compartment, disconnect electrical connector for forward light wiring harness. Remove PCM and harness, and lay them on engine. Pull main harness through firewall and lay it on engine.
  5. Disconnect positive lead (output wire) from alternator and junction block. Disconnect negative lead from stud near junction block. Disconnect shock absorbers from lower control arms. Disconnect steering knuckles from lower control arms at ball joints. Raise and support vehicle.
  6. Put a suitable support table (such as a heavy table on rollers) under engine, transmission and engine frame assembly. Remove bolt securing engine frame to body. Raise vehicle away from assembly. Remove transmission from assembly. Remove engine from assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase. Fill cooling system. Bleed power steering system. Bleed brake system. Align front end.

Removal

  1. Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__fuel-pressure-release) . Drain coolant. Remove intake air duct. Disconnect fuel injector harness connector. Disconnect control cables from throttle body. Disconnect fuel lines. Disconnect coolant hoses from throttle body. Remove fuel rail stud.
  2. Disconnect fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose. Disconnect electrical connectors as necessary. Blow dirt out of injector bores with compressed air. Remove fuel rail and injector assembly. Remove vacuum harness assembly. Disconnect EGR pipe and position it aside. Remove bolts, upper intake manifold, and gasket.
  3. Remove rocker arm covers. Disconnect upper radiator hose and heater hose from lower intake manifold. Disconnect ground wires. Remove bolts, lower manifold, and gasket.

Installation

  1. Apply bead of RTV sealant to lower intake manifold sealing surfaces. Install NEW intake manifold gaskets on cylinder heads. Ensure all holes are aligned. Install intake manifold. Tighten intake manifold mounting bolts to specification in sequence. (Scheme 2) Refer to «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__torque-specifications). Tighten to specification.
  2. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW gaskets between lower and upper intake manifolds. Use NEW "O" rings for fuel system components. Fill cooling system.

Removal (Left)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust crossover pipe. Lower vehicle. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector. On M/T models, remove secondary air injection pipe assembly from exhaust manifold. On all models, remove exhaust manifold bolts, exhaust manifold, heat shields, and gasket.

Removal (Right)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect exhaust crossover pipe from manifold. Lower vehicle. Remove "Y" brace from rear of alternator. Remove EGR valve, adapter, and flexible pipe. On M/T models, disconnect secondary air injection pipe from manifold. On all models, remove bolts, exhaust manifold, heat shields, and gasket.

Installation (Left & Right)

To install, reverse removal procedure using a NEW gasket. Tighten the exhaust manifold mounting bolts to specification. Refer to the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  1. Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__fuel-pressure-release) . Raise and support vehicle. Drain cooling system. Lower vehicle. Remove upper and lower intake manifolds. See «INTAKE MANIFOLDS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) . Remove left exhaust manifold. See «EXHAUST MANIFOLD»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) . Remove oil dipstick tube. Remove serpentine drive belt.
  2. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor connector. Remove spark plug wires and spark plugs from left cylinder head. Remove engine lift bracket. Remove wiring harness and secondary air injection pipe brackets (if equipped). Remove power steering pump (leave hose attached). Remove push rods. Remove bolts, cylinder head, and gasket.
  1. Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__fuel-pressure-release) . Raise and support vehicle. Drain cooling system. Lower vehicle. Remove serpentine drive belt and tensioner. Remove upper and lower intake manifolds. See «INTAKE MANIFOLDS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) .
  2. Remove right exhaust manifold. See «EXHAUST MANIFOLD»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) . Remove alternator and brackets. Remove spark plug wires and spark plugs from right cylinder head. Remove push rods. Remove bolts, cylinder head, and gasket.

Inspection (Left & Right)

Machine gasket surface if warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. DO NOT remove more than .010" (.25 mm) of material from original surface.

Clean cylinder head bolt threads and cylinder block holes. Install gasket. Install cylinder head. Apply GM Sealant (1052080) to cylinder head bolt threads. Install cylinder head bolts and tighten to specification in sequence. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. (Scheme 3) Fill cooling system.

Scheme 3: Installation (Left & Right)
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove intake air duct. Remove serpentine belt. Remove water pump. See «WATER PUMP»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) . Remove crankshaft balancer. Remove power steering pump with bracket (leave hoses attached).
  2. Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN. Disconnect lower radiator hose from front cover. Remove crankshaft position sensor. Remove bolts, front cover, and gasket.

Install NEW front cover oil seal. See FRONT COVER OIL SEAL . Apply RTV sealant to corners. Apply RTV sealant to keyway in crankshaft and crankshaft damper. Install crankshaft damper using Damper Installer (J-29113). Ensure damper installer threads are at least .20" (5.1 mm) into crankshaft. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Remove front cover. See FRONT COVER . Remove seal from front cover. Lubricate seal with engine oil. Using Seal Installer (J-34995), install seal. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Remove engine front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s). Place cylinder No. 4 at TDC (ensure marks on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are aligned with marks on engine block or timing chain damper). (Scheme 4)
  2. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain. Using Crankshaft Sprocket Remover (J-23444-A), remove crankshaft sprocket. Remove timing chain damper and crankshaft key (if necessary).
  1. Install timing chain damper and key (if removed). Using Installer (J-38612), install crankshaft sprocket. Install timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Align timing marks. (Scheme 4)
  2. Lubricate timing chain with engine oil. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__torque-specifications).

  1. Remove the upper and lower intake manifolds. Refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLDS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) . Remove oil pump drive from upper rear portion of engine block. Remove front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) . Remove timing chain and camshaft sprocket. See «TIMING CHAIN»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) .
  2. Remove rocker arms, push rods, and valve lifters. Mark component locations for installation reference. Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect A/C hoses from condenser. Remove radiator and condenser as an assembly. Remove condenser supports.
  3. To aid in removal of camshaft, install three 4" long bolts (5/16" X 18) into camshaft. Using bolts as a handle, carefully remove camshaft. If necessary, remove camshaft bearings.

Inspection

Inspect camshaft journal diameter, lobe lift and oil clearance. Replace components if not within specification. See CAMSHAFT table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

  1. Install camshaft bearings (if removed). Ensure oil holes are aligned. Lubricate camshaft bearings and lobes with engine oil. If replacing camshaft, coat lobes with Prelube (1052365).
  2. Install camshaft. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Ensure timing marks are aligned. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__torque-specifications) .
  1. Remove transmission. See appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICING & REPAIR article (A/T models) or appropriate CLUTCH article in the CLUTCHES section (M/T models).
  2. On M/T models, mark clutch pressure plate and flywheel for installation reference. Remove pressure plate, clutch disc and flywheel. On A/T models, remove flexplate and retainer.
  3. On all models, pry seal from housing. Use care not to damage crankshaft at sealing surface. Note direction of seal installation.
  1. Coat inner and outer seal surfaces with engine oil. Install seal on mandrel of Seal Installer (J-34686) until dust lip bottoms against seal installer collar. (Scheme 5) Align seal installer dowel pin with alignment hole of crankshaft.
  2. Install the seal installer onto crankshaft. To install seal into seal bore, tighten the seal installer handle until the seal installer collar is even with the cylinder block. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. On M/T models, align reference marks on the pressure plate and flywheel. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__torque-specifications).

Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner duct. Remove top ignition coil of coil pack. Loosen belt tensioner pulley bolt. Disconnect heater hose from water pump. Loosen water pump pulley bolts. Remove power steering pump bracket bolts. Remove serpentine drive belt. Remove water pump pulley. Remove power steering pump and bracket as an assembly (leave hoses attached). Remove bolts, water pump and gasket.

Install water pump using NEW gasket. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill cooling system.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air intake duct. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil. Remove wiring harness clips from oil pan rail. Remove oil level sensor. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Disconnect exhaust pipe hangers as necessary to position exhaust pipe aside.
  2. On A/T models, disconnect fluid lines from oil pan clips and remove torque converter cover. On all vehicles, remove starter. Remove engine mount through-bolts. Raise engine with jack. Remove oil pan nuts and bolts. Remove oil pan and gasket.

Note. If there is not enough clearance to remove oil pan, put suitable supports under engine frame. Loosen engine frame bolts NO MORE THAN 6 turns.

Apply RTV sealant to tabs of NEW gasket. Install oil pan. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase.

Gasket Surface

Resurface cylinder head if deck surface warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. DO NOT remove more than .010" (.25 mm) of material from original surface.

Valve Springs

If valve spring free length, out-of-square, or pressure is not within specification, replace spring. See VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Valve Spring Installed Height

  1. Measure installed height of exhaust valve spring (distance between bottom of valve spring and bottom of oil shield where it contacts top of spring). Measure installed height of intake valve spring (distance between bottom of valve spring and top of valve spring cap).
  2. If valve spring installed height exceeds specification, install shim(s) under the spring as necessary (DO NOT exceed specification). See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Valve Stem Oil Seals

If oversize valves are installed, use oversize seals. Ensure seal is fully seated on guide. Intake and exhaust seals are different.

Valve Guides

DO NOT knurl valve guides. If valve stem oil clearance is not within specification, ream valve guides for oversize valve. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Valve Seat

Measure seat runout and width. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Machine or replace valve seat as necessary if it is not within specification. Valve seat replacement procedure is not available from manufacturer.

Valves

If valve stem-to-guide oil clearance is not within specification, replace valve with oversize valve. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Valve Seat Correction Angles

If seat contact is too low (too close to stem) or too wide, use a 70-degree stone to raise or narrow seat.

CYLINDER BLOCK ASSEMBLY

CAUTIONBefore removing piston from connecting rod, mark piston-to- connecting rod relation for reassembly reference.

Cylinder Block

Measure deck surface warpage. Machine surface if warpage exceeds .004" (.10 mm). DO NOT remove more than .010" (.25 mm) of material from original deck surface.

Cylinder Block Flange Runout

  1. With engine removed and crankshaft installed, measure cylinder block flange runout. Mount dial indicator gauge plate flat against crankshaft flange. Place dial indicator stem on lower left transmission bolt boss (flat area around bolt hole). Adjust dial indicator to zero.
  2. Observe and record readings obtained on all bolt hole bosses. Measurements should not vary more than .010" (.25 mm). If readings exceed specification, check crankshaft flange runout. See CRANKSHAFT FLANGE RUNOUT procedure below.

Piston & Rod Assembly

Mark piston with cylinder number for installation in original location. Replace rod if bend or twist exceeds specification. See CONNECTING RODS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Install piston with arrow on top of piston toward front of engine.

Fitting Pistons

  1. Measure cylinder bore diameter at top and center of bore. Measure piston diameter at 90-degree angle to piston pin bore, at center line of piston pin bore.
  2. If piston clearance is not within specification, machine cylinders and install oversize pistons as necessary. DO NOT machine oversize pistons to fit cylinder bore, or engine balance will be affected. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Piston Rings

  1. Measure piston ring end gap and side clearance. If end gap and side clearance are not within specification, replace piston rings and/or piston as necessary. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Install piston rings with identification mark on ring land facing top of piston. Properly position ring end gaps around circumference of piston. (Scheme 6)

Rod Bearings

Measure rod bearing oil clearance. If oil clearance is not within specification, machine crankshaft and replace bearings. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Crankshaft & Main Bearings

Measure the crankshaft main bearing oil clearance, out-of-round and taper. If any measurements are not within specification, machine the crankshaft and replace the bearings. See specifications in the CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Crankshaft Flange Runout

  1. With engine removed and crankshaft installed, or with crankshaft mounted on V-blocks, measure crankshaft flange runout. Mount dial indicator, and place dial indicator stem on crankshaft flange. Adjust dial indicator to zero.
  2. Mark reference point on crankshaft flange. Ensure crankshaft is thrust forward so end float will not affect readings. Turn crankshaft 360 degrees.
  3. Observe and record readings. Reading should not vary more than .002" (.05 mm). Replace crankshaft if runout exceeds specification.

Thrust Bearing

Measure crankshaft end play (thrust bearing clearance). See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If not within specification, replace thrust bearing and/or repair or replace crankshaft.

Valve Lifter Bores

Oversize lifters are available. If oversize lifters are installed, stamp oversize on cylinder block near lifter bore to indicate oversize lifters have been installed.

ENGINE OILING SYSTEM

A camshaft-driven, gear-type oil pump provides pressurized lubrication through oil filter. (Scheme 7) A priority oil delivery system provides oil to crankshaft journals first. The passage providing oil to crankshaft journals is intersected by vertical passages that provide lubrication to camshaft journals. Camshaft passages also provide oil to valve lifters.

Rocker arms are lubricated by passages in push rods. Slot in front camshaft bearing provides lubrication to camshaft sprocket thrust face. Pressure regulator valve is mounted in oil pump body.

Crankcase Capacity

Engine oil capacity is approximately 4 qts. (3.7L) without filter change. More oil may need to be added when replacing oil filter.

Oil Pressure

Minimum oil pressure is 15 psi (1.1 kg/cm 2 ) at 1100 RPM.

Removal & Disassembly

  1. Remove oil pan. See «OIL PAN»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove oil pump bolt, oil pump and extension shaft from rear main bearing cap.
  2. To disassemble, remove pump cover. DO NOT remove pick-up tube from cover unless loose or broken. If pick-up tube is loose, bent or has been removed, replace pick-up tube and pump cover. WARNING: On some models, pressure regulator valve spring is under pressure. Use care when removing spring to prevent personal injury.
  3. Remove gears from pump body. Remove pressure regulator valve cotter pin. Remove valve and spring.
  1. Inspect components for damage. Using straightedge and feeler gauge, measure gear end clearance. Measure housing pocket depth and diameter. Measure gear diameter and length (thickness). Measure side clearance between gear tooth and housing.
  2. Measure gear lash clearance between gear teeth. Check clearance between the pressure regulator valve and bore. Replace components or pump assembly if not within specification. Refer to the «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s) table.

OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS

Note. Use only original equipment gaskets for oil pump service as gasket thickness is critical.

Reassembly & Installation

  1. To reassemble, coat all components with engine oil. Reverse disassembly procedure using NEW pump cover gasket.
  2. If installing new pick-up tube, apply Sealant (1050026) to pick-up tube. Install pick-up tube into pump cover using Suction Pipe Installer (J-21882) and plastic hammer.
  3. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Ensure pump extension shaft is fully engaged. Tighten oil pump bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1992-1998/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-v6-vin-s__torque-specifications) .

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

(1) Apply Sealant (1052080) to cylinder head bolts. (2) Refer to TSB REVISED CYLINDER HEAD BOLT TORQUE SPECIFICATION AND TIGHTENING SEQUENCE. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence. (Scheme 3) (3) Tighten lower intake manifold bolts in sequence. (Scheme 2) (4) Tighten to 89 INCH Lbs. (10 N.m). (5) See Water Pump Bolt (Small) under INCH Lbs. (N.m).
(1)Apply Sealant (1052080) to cylinder head bolts.
(2)Refer to TSB REVISED CYLINDER HEAD BOLT TORQUE SPECIFICATION AND TIGHTENING SEQUENCE. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence. (Scheme 3)
(3)Tighten lower intake manifold bolts in sequence. (Scheme 2)
(4)Tighten to 89 INCH Lbs. (10 N.m).
(5)See Water Pump Bolt (Small) under INCH Lbs. (N.m).
