Communication Devices ~1799 words

Automatic

  1. Inspect HVAC system for obvious signs of leakage, damaged or faulty relays or fuses. Perform HVAC performance test. See appropriate AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article. Repair system as necessary. If no obvious fault can be determined, go to next step.
  2. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see «TEST B: SCAN TOOL INOPERATIVE»(ref-125756-S10896695252001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with BCM, HVAC module, and PCM. If scan tool successfully communicates with specified modules, go to next step. If scan tool communication is unsuccessful, see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Select display DTCs from BCM, HVAC module and PCM. If DTCs are displayed, go to next step. If not DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See appropriate AUTOMATIC AC-HEATER SYSTEMS article.
  5. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If any other DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC which begin with "B10XX", see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-125756-S17902297152001121000000) . Repair as necessary. If any other DTCs are detected, go to next step.
  7. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "B" that are associated with charging system. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-125756-S17902297152001121000000) . If charging system DTCs are recorded, see «ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-125756-S16655749632001101700000) .
  8. If scan tool displays any DTCs related to HVAC system, repair as directed. See AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article. If PXXXX DTCs are recorded not related to HVAC system, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Repair as directed.

Manual

  1. Inspect HVAC system for obvious signs of leakage, damaged or faulty relays or fuses. Perform HVAC performance test. See appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article. Repair system as necessary. If no obvious fault can be determined, go to next step.
  2. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see «TEST B: SCAN TOOL INOPERATIVE»(ref-125756-S10896695252001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Attempt to establish communications with PCM. If scan tool communicates with PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Select PCM display DTCs function on scan tool. If DTCs are displayed, go to next step. If no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article. Repair as necessary.
  5. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If any other DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays any DTCs related to HVAC system, repair as directed. See AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article. If PXXXX DTCs are recorded not related to HVAC system, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Repair as directed.

NV 1500

  1. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see «TEST B: SCAN TOOL INOPERATIVE»(ref-125756-S10896695252001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. If scan tool displays PCM data go to next step. If scan tool does not display PCM data, see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Attempt to start engine. If engine runs, go to next step. If engine does not run, repair by symptom. See appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Using scan tool, check BCM and PCM for DTCs. If PCM DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If PCM DTCs are not retrieved, go to step 7 .
  5. Record FREEZE FRAME and FAILURE RECORDS information, then go to next step.
  6. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-125756-S17902297152001121000000) . Perform repairs as directed.
  7. If BCM DTCs are recorded, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-125756-S17902297152001121000000) . Repair as directed. If BCM DTCs were not recorded, go to next step.
  8. If customer's concern is related to engine emissions and/or performance, see appropriate EMISSIONS APPLICATIONS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  9. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Scan tool Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) display should indicate 0 mph (0 km/h). If VSS display is as specified, go to next step. If VSS display is not as specified, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  10. Repair by symptom. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

NV 3500

  1. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see «TEST B: SCAN TOOL INOPERATIVE»(ref-125756-S10896695252001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Use scan tool to attempt communications with EBCM, HVAC module, Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) module, PCM and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module. If attempt to establish communications with specified modules is successful, go to next step. If communications can not be established, see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. if engine does not start, see appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE article.
  4. Select DTC display function for PCM, VTD, IPC, EBCM and HVAC modules. If DTCs are displayed, go to next step. if not DTCs are retrieved, go to step 9 .
  5. Using scan tool, select CAPTURED INFO to store DTCs into memory, then go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If any other DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  7. If scan tool displays DTCs P0601, P0602, P0604, P0650 or P1683 see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any other DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  8. If scan tool displays DTCs P0562, P0563, P1637 or P1638, see «ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-125756-S16655749632001101700000) . If any other DTCs are displayed, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-125756-S17902297152001121000000) . Perform repairs as directed.
  9. If customer's concern is related to engine emissions and/or performance, see appropriate EMISSIONS APPLICATIONS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If concern is not related to emissions, go to TROUBLESHOOTING - NO CODES - TRUCKS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

2.2 L Engines

  1. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see «TEST B: SCAN TOOL INOPERATIVE»(ref-125756-S10896695252001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Use scan tool to attempt communications with BCM, EBCM, Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), PCM, SDM, and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module. If scan tool communicates with specified modules, go to next step. If communications can not be established, see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Select DTC display function from BCM, EBCM, IPC, PCM, SDM and VTD modules. If DTCs are recorded, go to next step. If DTCs are not retrieved, go to step 9 .
  5. Use scan tool to select CAPTURED INFO and store DTCs, then go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If any other DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  7. If scan tool displays PCM DTCs P0601, P0602, or P1621, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any other DTCs are retrieved, go to next step.
  8. If scan tool displays DTCs P0562, P0563, P0621, P0622, P1637, or P1638, see «ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-125756-S16655749632001101700000) . If any other DTCs are retrieved, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-125756-S17902297152001121000000) . Perform repairs as directed.
  9. If customer's concern is not with transmission, go to next step. If customer's concern is with transmission see, «AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-125756-S02545832872001101700000) or «MANUAL TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-125756-S38174652472001101700000) as appropriate.
  10. If customer's concern is related to engine emissions and/or performance, see appropriate EMISSIONS APPLICATIONS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If concern is not related to emissions, go to TROUBLESHOOTING - NO CODES - TRUCKS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

4.3L Engines

  1. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see «TEST B: SCAN TOOL INOPERATIVE»(ref-125756-S10896695252001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Use scan tool to attempt communications with EBCM, HVAC module, Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), PCM, and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module. If scan tool communicates with specified modules, go to next step.   3. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Select DTC display function for EBCM, HVAC, IPC, PCM and VTD modules. If DTCs are retrieved go to next step. If no DTCs are retrieved go to step 9 .
  5. Use scan tool to select CAPTURED INFO and store DTCs, then go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", see «TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE»(ref-125756-S42252162702001101200000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If any other DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  7. If scan tool displays DTCs P0601, P0602, P0604, or P01683, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any other DTCs are retrieved, go to next step.
  8. If scan tool displays DTCs P0562, P0563, P1637 or P1638, see «ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-125756-S16655749632001101700000) . If any other DTCs are retrieved, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-125756-S17902297152001121000000) . Perform repairs as necessary.
  9. If customers concern is not with transmission, go to next step. If customers concern is with transmission, see «AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-125756-S02545832872001101700000) .
  10. If customer's concern is related to engine emissions and/or performance, see appropriate EMISSIONS APPLICATIONS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If concern is not related to emissions, go to TROUBLESHOOTING - NO CODES - TRUCKS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

SYSTEM TESTS

Note. Do not replace BCM unless a DTC remains current after all DTC repairs have been performed. Do not replace BCM if only history DTCs are set.
