Brake Pads Replacement - Front (JE5)

Removal Procedure
- Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
- If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
- If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-197567-S01952905382005101200000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Install a large C-clamp over the body of the brake caliper with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against the outboard brake pad.
- Tighten the C-clamp evenly until the caliper pistons are compressed into the caliper bores enough to allow the caliper to slide past the brake rotor.
- Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.
- To loosen the brake caliper lower pin bolt, hold the brake caliper guide pin with a wrench.
- Remove the brake caliper pin bolt.
- Pivot the brake caliper body (1) upward and secure the caliper out of the way with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. Ensure that there is no tension on the hydraulic brake flexible hose. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
- Remove the brake pads (1) from the caliper bracket.
- Remove and inspect the brake pad retainers from the caliper bracket.
Installation Procedure
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pin bolts. If damaged or corroded, replace the brake caliper guide bolts.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged or corroded, replace the brake caliper guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion. Refer to «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S33130845242005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S15510357442005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S16808208922005101200000) .
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pin boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, replace the brake caliper guide pin boots. Refer to «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S33130845242005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S15510357442005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S16808208922005101200000) .
- Carefully pull outward on the caliper guide pin (3) to ensure that the caliper guide pin retaining seat is fully seated to the caliper guide pin boot (2).
- Inspect the brake caliper piston boot for deterioration. Replace if damaged. Refer to «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S03715729492005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S42660186712005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S33264267342005101200000) .
- Install a large C-clamp (1) over the body of the brake caliper (3), with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against an old inboard brake pad (2) or a wood block installed against the caliper pistons.
- Tighten the C-clamp (1) evenly until the caliper pistons are compressed completely into the caliper bores.
- Remove the C-clamp and the old brake pad or wood block from the caliper.
- Install the brake pad retainers to the caliper bracket.
- Install the brake pads (1) to the caliper bracket.
- Pivot the brake caliper (1) downward, over the brake pads and into the caliper bracket.
- If reusing the caliper pin bolts, prepare the bolt and the threaded hole for assembly: Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
- Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to 2/3 of the threaded length of the lower caliper pin bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt.
- Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
- Apply a thin coat of Niglube® GM P/N 18046532 grease or equivalent to the front brake caliper guide pin.
- Install the lower brake caliper pin bolt. Tighten: Hold the lower brake caliper guide pin with a wrench and tighten the lower brake caliper pin bolt to 34 N.m (25 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
- Slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 15 and 16 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
- Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level. Refer to «Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling»(ref-197584-S19930507662005101200000) in Hydraulic Brakes.
- Burnish the pads and rotors. Refer to «Burnishing Pads and Rotors»(ref-197582-S37363659672005101200000) .
Brake Pads Replacement - Front (JL9)

- Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.

- Install a large C-clamp over the body of the brake caliper with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against the outboard brake pad.
- Tighten the C-clamp evenly until the caliper pistons are compressed into the caliper bores enough to allow the caliper to slide past the brake rotor.
- Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.
- To loosen the brake caliper lower pin bolt, hold the brake caliper guide pin with a wrench.
- Remove the brake caliper pin bolt.
- Pivot the brake caliper body (1) upward and secure the caliper out of the way with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. Ensure that there is no tension on the hydraulic brake flexible hose. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
- Remove the brake pads (1) from the caliper bracket.
- Remove and inspect the brake pad retainers from the caliper bracket.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pin bolts. If damaged or corroded, replace the brake caliper guide bolts.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged or corroded, replace the brake caliper guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion. - Inspect the brake caliper guide pin boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, replace the brake caliper guide pin boots. - Inspect the brake caliper piston boot for deterioration. Replace if damaged. - Install a large C-clamp (1) over the body of the brake caliper (3), with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against an old inboard brake pad (2) or a wood block installed against the caliper pistons.

- Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
- Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone lube to the front brake caliper guide pin.
- Install the lower brake caliper pin bolt. Tighten: Hold the lower brake caliper guide pin with a wrench and tighten the lower brake caliper pin bolt to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
- Slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 15 and 16 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.

Brake Pads Replacement - Front (J56)

- Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
- If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
- If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-197567-S01952905382005101200000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Holding the lower end of the retainer (1) down and using a hammer and punch carefully tap the lower caliper guide pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
- Carefully rotate the brake pad retainer (1) upward.
- Remove the brake pad retainer (1).
- Using a hammer and punch tap the upper caliper to brake pad mounting pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
- Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and inboard brake pad.
- Carefully apply pressure to the inboard brake pad until both caliper inner pistons are fully compressed into the caliper piston bores.
- Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and outboard brake pad.
- Carefully apply pressure to the outboard brake pad until both caliper outer pistons are fully compressed into the bores.
- Remove the brake pads (1) from the caliper.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged, or corroded replace the guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion.
- Inspect the brake caliper piston boot for damage and/or deterioration, replace if damaged or deteriorated. Refer to «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S03715729492005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S42660186712005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S33264267342005101200000) .
- Install the brake pads (1) to the caliper.
- Install the upper caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
- Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin (2) to the outer caliper half. Ensure that the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat.
- Install the brake pad retainer (1) under the upper caliper pin assembly.
- Rotate brake pad retainer (1) down.
- Carefully apply pressure downward on the lower end of the brake pad retainer.
- Carefully install the lower caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
- Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin (2) to the outer caliper half. Ensure that the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat. Ensure that the brake pad retainer is centered retaining both brake pads.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
- Slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 15 and 16 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.

- Loosen the lower brake caliper pin bolt and remove the lower brake caliper pin bolt.
- Pivot the brake caliper upward from the caliper bracket and support the caliper out of the way with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent; ensure that there is no tension on the hydraulic brake flexible hose. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
- Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket.
- Remove and inspect the brake pad retainers from the caliper bracket.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pin bolts. If damaged or corroded replace the brake caliper guide bolts.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged, or corroded replace the brake caliper guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion. - Inspect the brake caliper guide pin seals for cuts, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, replace the brake caliper guide pin seals. Refer to «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Rear (JL9, JE5)»(ref-197582-S05722090962005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Rear (J56)»(ref-197582-S08005085352005101200000) .
- Inspect the brake caliper piston boot for deterioration, replace if damaged. Refer to «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Rear (JE5)»(ref-197582-S07741875092005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Rear (JL9)»(ref-197582-S07185850032005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Rear (J56)»(ref-197582-S03749849352005101200000) .
- Install a large C-clamp (1) over the body of the brake caliper (3) with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against an old inboard brake pad (2) or a wood block installed against the caliper piston.
- Tighten the C-clamp (1) until the caliper piston is compressed completely into the caliper bore.
- Remove the C-clamp and the old brake pad or wood block from the caliper.
- Install the brake pad retainers to the caliper bracket.
- Install the brake pads to the caliper bracket. The brake pad wear sensor, mounted on the inboard brake pad, must be positioned so that it is in the trailing position during forward rotation of the brake rotor.
- Pivot the brake caliper downward, over the brake pads and into the caliper bracket.
- Prepare the bolt and the threaded hole for assembly: Thoroughly clean there residue from the fastener threads using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Thoroughly clean residue from the threaded holes using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
- Apply threadlocker GM 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to two-thirds of the threaded length of the lower caliper pin bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt.
- Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately ten minutes before installation.
- Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone lube to the front brake caliper guide pin.
- Install the lower brake caliper pin bolt. Tighten: Hold the lower caliper guide pin with a wrench and tighten the lower brake caliper pin bolt to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
- Slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 15 and 16 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
- Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level. Refer to «Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling»(ref-197584-S19930507662005101200000) in Hydraulic Brakes.
- Burnish the pads and rotors. Refer to «Burnishing Pads and Rotors»(ref-197582-S37363659672005101200000) .
Brake Pads Replacement - Rear (J56)

- Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and inboard brake pad.
- Carefully apply pressure to the inboard brake pad until both caliper inner pistons are fully compressed into the caliper piston bores.
- Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and outboard brake pad.
- Carefully apply pressure to the outboard brake pad until both caliper outer pistons are fully compressed into the bores.
- Remove the brake pads (1) from the caliper.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged, or corroded replace the guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion.
- Inspect the brake caliper piston boot for damage and/or deterioration, replace if damaged or deteriorated. Refer to «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S03715729492005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S42660186712005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S33264267342005101200000) .
- Install the brake pads (1) to the caliper.
- Install the upper caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.

- Tighten the C-clamp until the caliper piston is compressed into the caliper bore enough to allow the caliper to slide past the brake rotor.
- Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.
- Remove the brake hose to caliper bolt attaching the brake hose to the brake caliper.
- Remove the brake hose from the brake caliper.
- Remove and discard the 2 copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.
- Plug the opening in the brake caliper and the brake hose to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
- Remove the brake caliper pin bolts.
- Remove the brake caliper from the brake caliper bracket.
- Inspect the caliper guide pin boots (2) for cuts, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, replace the slides and boots. Refer to «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S33130845242005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S15510357442005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S16808208922005101200000) .
- Install the brake caliper to the brake caliper bracket.
- Prepare the bolts and the threaded holes for assembly: Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
- Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to 2/3 of the threaded length of the lower caliper bracket bolts. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts.
- Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
- Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper pin bolts.
- Install the brake caliper pin bolts. Tighten: Tighten the brake caliper pin bolts to 34 N.m (25 lb ft).
- Remove the plug from the brake caliper opening and the brake hose.
- Assemble the NEW copper brake hose gaskets, and the brake caliper bolt to the brake hose.
- Install the brake hose and the brake caliper bolt to the brake caliper. Tighten: Tighten the brake hose to caliper bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
- Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to «Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Manual)»(ref-197584-S03459483362005101200000) or «Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure)»(ref-197584-S23113217582005101200000) in Hydraulic Brakes.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
- Slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 11 and 12 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
Brake Caliper Replacement - Front (JL9)

- Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
- If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
- If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-197567-S01952905382005101200000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Install a large C-clamp over the body of the brake caliper with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against the outboard brake pad.
- Tighten the C-clamp evenly until the caliper pistons are compressed into the caliper bores enough to allow the caliper to slide past the brake rotor.
- Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.
- To loosen the brake caliper lower pin bolt, hold the brake caliper guide pin with a wrench.
- Remove the brake caliper pin bolt.
- Pivot the brake caliper body (1) upward and secure the caliper out of the way with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. Ensure that there is no tension on the hydraulic brake flexible hose. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
- Remove the brake pads (1) from the caliper bracket.
- Remove and inspect the brake pad retainers from the caliper bracket.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pin bolts. If damaged or corroded, replace the brake caliper guide bolts.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged or corroded, replace the brake caliper guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion. - Inspect the brake caliper guide pin boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, replace the brake caliper guide pin boots. - Inspect the brake caliper piston boot for deterioration. Replace if damaged. Refer to «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S03715729492005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S42660186712005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S33264267342005101200000) .
- Install a large C-clamp (1) over the body of the brake caliper (3), with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against an old inboard brake pad (2) or a wood block installed against the caliper pistons.
- Tighten the C-clamp (1) evenly until the caliper pistons are compressed completely into the caliper bores.
- Remove the C-clamp and the old brake pad or wood block from the caliper.
- Install the brake pad retainers to the caliper bracket.
- Install the brake pads (1) to the caliper bracket.
- Pivot the brake caliper (1) downward, over the brake pads and into the caliper bracket.
- If reusing the caliper pin bolts, prepare the bolt and the threaded hole for assembly: Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
- Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to 2/3 of the threaded length of the lower caliper pin bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt.
- Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
- Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone lube to the front brake caliper guide pin.
- Install the lower brake caliper pin bolt. Tighten: Hold the lower brake caliper guide pin with a wrench and tighten the lower brake caliper pin bolt to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.

- Remove and discard the two copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.
- Plug the opening in the brake caliper and the brake hose to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
- Remove the brake caliper to knuckle mounting bolts (1).
- Remove the brake caliper from the brake caliper bracket.
- Prepare the bolts and the threaded holes for assembly: Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
- Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to two-thirds of the threaded length of the caliper to knuckle mounting bolts. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts.
- Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately ten minutes before installation.
- Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper pin.
- Install the brake caliper to knuckle bolts (1). Tighten: Tighten the brake caliper to knuckle bolts to 130 N.m (96 lb ft).
- Remove the plug from the brake caliper opening and the brake hose.
- Assemble the NEW copper brake hose gaskets, and the brake caliper bolt to the brake hose.
- Install the brake hose and the brake caliper hose bolt to the brake caliper. Tighten: Tighten the brake hose to caliper bolt to 34 N.m (25 lb ft).
- Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to «Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Manual)»(ref-197584-S03459483362005101200000) or «Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure)»(ref-197584-S23113217582005101200000) in Hydraulic Brakes.

- Apply a thin coat of Niglube® GM P/N 18046532 grease to the brake caliper guide pin boots.

- Install the caliper guide pins (3) to the caliper mounting bracket (1). Ensure the caliper guide pin retaining seat is fully seated to the caliper pin boot (2).
- Carefully pull outward on the caliper guide pin (3) to ensure that the caliper guide pin retaining seat is fully seated to the caliper guide pin boot (2).
- Install the brake pad retainers to the brake caliper bracket.
- Install the brake pads to the brake caliper bracket.
- Install the brake caliper to the mounting bracket. - Remove the brake caliper pin boots (3) from the brake caliper mounting bracket (4).
- Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone lube to the brake caliper guide pin boots.
- Using a suitable tool, press the brake caliper pin boots (3) into the brake caliper mounting bracket (4). Do not hammer the caliper pin boots into the bracket. Ensure that the caliper pin boots are fully seated in the bracket.
- Install the brake caliper guide pins (2) to the brake caliper mounting bracket (4).
- Install the brake pad retainers to the brake caliper bracket.
- Install the brake pad retainers to the disc brake caliper bracket.
- Install the brake pads to the brake caliper bracket.
- Install the brake caliper to the mounting bracket.

- Holding the lower end of the retainer (1) down and using a hammer and punch carefully tap the lower caliper guide pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
- Carefully rotate the brake pad retainer (1) upward.
- Carefully remove the brake pad retainer (1).
- Using a hammer and punch tap the upper caliper to brake pad mounting pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged, or corroded replace the guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion.
- Install the brake pads (1) to the caliper.
- Install the upper caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
- Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin (2) to the outer caliper half. Ensure that the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat.
- Install the brake pad retainer (1) under the upper caliper pin assembly.
- Rotate brake pad retainer (1) down.
- Carefully apply pressure downward on the lower end of the brake pad retainer.
- Carefully install the lower caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
- Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin (2) to the outer caliper half. Ensure that the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat. Ensure that the brake pad retainer is centered retaining both brake pads.
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
- Slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 15 and 16 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained, this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
- Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level. Refer to «Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling»(ref-197584-S19930507662005101200000) in Hydraulic Brakes.
Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Rear (JL9, JE5)

- Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
- If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, then no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, then remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-197567-S01952905382005101200000) in General Information.
- Using a C-clamp installed to the center of the outer brake pad and the back of the caliper, slowly compress the caliper piston into its bore just enough to remove the caliper from the mounting bracket.
- To loosen the brake caliper pin bolts, hold the brake caliper guide pin with a wrench.
- Remove the brake caliper bolts.
- Remove the brake caliper from the mounting bracket.
- Remove the brake pads from the disc brake caliper bracket.
- Remove the brake pad retainers from the disc brake caliper bracket.
- Remove the brake caliper guide pins (2) from the brake caliper mounting bracket (4).
- Remove the caliper pin boots (3) from the brake caliper mounting bracket (4).
- Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone lube to the brake caliper guide pin boots.
- Using a suitable tool press the brake caliper pin boots (3) to the brake caliper mounting bracket (4). Do not hammer the boots into the bracket.
- Install the brake caliper guide pins (2) to the brake caliper mounting bracket (4).
- Install the brake pad retainers to the brake caliper bracket.
- Install the brake pads to the brake caliper bracket.
- Install the brake caliper to the mounting bracket.
- Prepare the bolts and the threaded holes for assembly: Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canada P/N 10953488), or equivalent to two-thirds of the threaded length of the lower caliper bracket bolts. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately ten minutes before installation. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone lube to the brake caliper guide pins.
- Install the brake caliper bolts (1). Tighten: Tighten the brake caliper bolts to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Fill the master cylinder to the proper level. Refer to «Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling»(ref-197584-S19930507662005101200000) in Hydraulic Brakes.
Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Rear (J56)

- Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.

- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and inboard brake pad.
- Carefully apply pressure to the inboard brake pad until both caliper inner pistons are fully compressed into the caliper piston bores.
- Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and outboard brake pad.
- Carefully apply pressure to the outboard brake pad until both caliper outer pistons are fully compressed into the bores.
- Holding the lower end of the retainer (1) down and using a hammer and punch carefully tap the lower caliper guide pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
- Carefully rotate the brake pad retainer (1) upward.
- Carefully remove the brake pad retainer (1).
- Using a hammer and punch tap the upper caliper to brake pad mounting pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
- Inspect the brake caliper guide pins. If damaged, or corroded replace the guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion.
- Install the brake pads (1) to the caliper.
- Install the upper caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.

- Remove the brake caliper from the brake caliper bracket. - Support the brake caliper (1) with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent; do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
- Remove the brake pads (2) from the brake caliper bracket (3).
- Remove the brake pad retainers (1) from the brake caliper bracket (3).
- Remove the brake caliper guide pins (3).
- Remove the brake caliper pin boots (2) from the brake caliper mounting bracket (1).
- Remove the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts (2).
- Remove the brake caliper bracket (1) from the knuckle.
- Inspect the brake caliper bracket (1). Refer to «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S33130845242005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S15510357442005101200000) or «Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S16808208922005101200000) .
- Replace the brake caliper bracket if cracked or damaged.
- Install the brake caliper bracket (1) to the knuckle.
- Prepare the bolts and the threaded holes for assembly: Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canada P/N 10953488), or equivalent to two-thirds of the threaded length of the lower caliper bracket bolts. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately ten minutes before installation.
- Install the two brake caliper bracket bolts (2). Tighten: Tighten the front brake caliper bracket bolts to 130 N.m (96 lb ft).
- Install the caliper guide pin boots (2) to the brake caliper mounting bracket retaining seat (1).
- Install the caliper guide pins (1) to the caliper mounting bracket (3). Ensure the caliper guide pin retaining seat is fully seated to the caliper pin boot (2).
- Carefully pull outward on the caliper guide pin (3) to ensure that the caliper guide pin retaining seat is fully seated to the caliper guide pin boot (2).
- Install the brake pad retainers (1) to the brake caliper bracket (3).
- Install the brake pads (2) to the brake caliper bracket (3).
- Install the brake caliper (1) to the front brake caliper bracket (2). Refer to «Brake Caliper Replacement - Front (JE5)»(ref-197582-S39571105262005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Replacement - Front (JL9)»(ref-197582-S35458095492005101200000) or «Brake Caliper Replacement - Front (J56)»(ref-197582-S05754522702005101200000) .
Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Rear

- Remove the brake caliper (2) from the brake caliper bracket (3) and support the brake caliper (2) with heavy mechanic's wire (1), or equivalent. - Remove the brake pads (2) from the brake caliper bracket (3).
- Remove the brake pad retainers (1) from the brake caliper bracket (3).
- Remove the brake caliper bracket bolts (1).
- Remove the rear brake caliper bracket.

- Inspect the brake caliper bracket.
- Replace the brake caliper bracket if cracked or damaged.
- Install the brake caliper bracket.

- Install the brake pad retainers (1) to the brake caliper bracket (3).
- Install the brake pads (2) to the brake caliper bracket (3).

- Matchmark the position of the brake rotor to the wheel studs.
- Remove the brake rotor mounting screw.
- Remove the brake rotor.
- Using the J 42450-A , thoroughly clean any rust or corrosion from the mating surface of the hub/axle flange. See «Special Tools»(ref-197582-S10500389362005101200000) .
- Using the J 41013 , thoroughly clean any rust or corrosion from the mating surface and mounting surface of the brake rotor. See «Special Tools»(ref-197582-S10500389362005101200000) .
- Inspect the mating surfaces of the hub/axle flange and the rotor to ensure that there are no foreign particles or debris remaining.
- Install the brake rotor to the hub/axle flange. Use the matchmark made prior to removal for proper orientation to the flange.
- Install the brake rotor mounting screw. Tighten: Tighten the brake rotor mounting screw to 14 N.m (124 lb in).
- If the brake rotor was removed and installed as part of a brake system repair, measure the assembled lateral runout (LRO) of the brake rotor to ensure optimum performance of the disc brakes. Refer to «Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral Runout (LRO) Measurement»(ref-197582-S09289980392005101200000) .
- If the brake rotor assembled LRO measurement exceeds the specification, bring the LRO to within specifications. Refer to «Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral Runout (LRO) Correction»(ref-197582-S13433819842005101200000) .
- Install the brake caliper and the brake caliper bracket as an assembly to the suspension knuckle. Refer to «Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Front»(ref-197582-S32975803772005101200000) .

- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-197568-S26287798292005101200000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the brake caliper and the caliper mounting bracket as an assembly from the suspension knuckle and support the assembly with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent. Ensure that there is no tension on the hydraulic brake flexible hose. Refer to «Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Rear»(ref-197582-S21427208722005101200000) .
- Matchmark the position of the brake rotor to the wheel studs.
- Remove the brake rotor mounting screw.
- Remove the brake rotor. Do not force the rotor off. If the rotor is difficult to remove, ease it off by gently rotating it as you pull outward.
- If the brake rotor cannot be removed perform the following: Assemble J-46277 to J 2619-01 . Insert J-46277 between the rotor friction surfaces in the vent section of the rotor. DO NOT place the J-46277 on the rotor friction surface. Using J-46277 and J 2619-01 remove the rotor from the hub assembly. Inspect the park brake components for the following conditions: Bent or broken hold down spring Broken, cracked or worn brake shoe lining Bent or damaged brake shoe Worn, bent or damaged backing plate If any of these conditions are found replace the affected parts.
- Using the J 42450-A , thoroughly clean any rust or corrosion from the mating surface of the hub/axle flange. See «Special Tools»(ref-197582-S10500389362005101200000) .
- Using the J 41013 , thoroughly clean any rust or corrosion from the mating surface and mounting surface of the brake rotor. See «Special Tools»(ref-197582-S10500389362005101200000) .
- Inspect the mating surfaces of the hub/axle flange and the rotor to ensure that there are no foreign particles or debris remaining.
- If installing a new brake rotor, adjust the clearance of the parking brake shoe to the drum-in-hat portion of the brake rotor. Refer to «Park Brake Adjustment»(ref-197581-S14422324122005101200000) in Park Brake.
- Install the brake rotor to the hub/axle flange. Use the matchmark made prior to removal for proper orientation to the flange.
- Install the brake rotor mounting screw. Tighten: Tighten the brake rotor mounting screw to 14 N.m (124 lb in).

- Lower the vehicle.

- Remove the front wheel bearing assembly. Refer to «Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Front (AWD)»(ref-197576-S05764114602005101200000) or «Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Front (RWD)»(ref-197576-S25636799432005101200000) in Front Suspension.
- Remove the splash shield from the steering knuckle.
- Use the J 42450-A in order to clean any rust or corrosion from the wheel hub surface. See «Special Tools»(ref-197582-S10500389362005101200000) .
- Clean any rust or contaminants from the steering knuckle to splash shield mating surfaces.
- Install the splash shield to the steering knuckle.
- Install the wheel bearing assembly. Refer to «Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Front (AWD)»(ref-197576-S05764114602005101200000) or «Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Front (RWD)»(ref-197576-S25636799432005101200000) in Front Suspension.
