Engine Removal Cadillac Eldorado IX

1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Remove mass airflow sensor. Remove exhaust crossover heat shield. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
2. Remove serpentine belt and tensioner. Remove power steering pump mounting bracket. Disconnect heater pipe at power steering pump mounting bracket. Disconnect radiator hose at engine. Disconnect accelerator and TV cable at throttle valve.
3. Remove alternator. Disconnect wiring harness at engine. Disconnect fuel lines. Disconnect coolant by-pass and overflow hoses at engine. Disconnect canister purge hose at canister. Remove vacuum hoses. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove right inner fender splash shield. Remove harmonic balancer. Remove flywheel cover. Remove wires at starter and remove starter. Disconnect wires at oil sending unit.
5. Remove A/C compressor and bracket. Disconnect exhaust pipe at rear of manifold. Remove drive plate-to-torque converter bolts. Remove transaxle-to-engine brace bolts. Remove engine rear mount-to-frame nuts.
6. Disconnect shift cable bracket at transaxle. Remove lower bellhousing bolts. Lower vehicle. Disconnect heater hoses at engine. Install engine lift. Support transaxle with jack.
7. Remove upper bellhousing and front mount bolts. Remove master cylinder. Remove engine.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Mark hinges for reassembly reference and remove hood. Remove cooling fans and accessory drive belt. Remove upper intake manifold. Remove radiator and heater hoses from intake manifold.
2. Remove following wire connectors and reposition out of way: oil pressure switches, coolant temperature sensor, distributor, engine temperature switch, injectors at injector harness connector, oxygen sensors, alternator, and ground wires at alternator bracket.
3. Remove cruise control diaphram with bracket and move out of way. Remove oil and transmission cooler lines from radiator and remove radiator. Remove oil cooler lines. Remove air cleaner mounting bracket and oil filter adapter.
4. Remove A.I.R tubes from diverter valve. Remove cross-car brace, right front heater hose, coolant reservoir, and AIR filter and bracket. Remove P/S line brace on right cylinder head. Remove P/S pump and tensioner assembly and position out of way. Discharge A/C system. Remove A/C lines to accumulator and condenser. NOTE: Carefully bleed fuel pressure at fuel line Schrader valve. Use a container to catch fuel.
5. Remove fuel line bracket and move fuel lines out of way. Raise and support vehicle. Remove electrical connectors from starter and ground wires from block. Remove oil level sensor and oxygen sensor(s). Remove exhaust "Y" pipe, starter, and drive plate cover. Remove drive plate-to-converter bolts, A/C compressor lower dust shield, right front tire and wheel assembly, and outer wheelhouse plastic shield.
6. Remove right rear transmission/engine mounting bolt, front engine mount nuts and right rear transmission mount bolts. Remove alternator, oxygen sensor wires and heater by-pass bracket from right of vehicle. Remove right engine brace.
7. Lower vehicle. Remove 5 top engine/transmission mounting bolts. Install engine lift chain and remove engine.

To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal (DeVille & Fleetwood)

1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Mark hinges for reassembly reference and remove hood. Disconnect A/C hose strap from right strut tower. Disconnect A/C accumulator from bracket, and move aside.
2. Disconnect canister hose and ground wire from A/C accumulator bracket. Disconnect A/C accumulator bracket from wheel housing. Remove cooling fan. Remove accessory drive belt and heater hose. Remove upper radiator hose.
3. Disconnect all engine wiring. Disconnect cables from throttle lever. Disconnect cruise control diaphram with bracket and move out of way. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect exhaust crossover pipe.
4. Disconnect oil cooler lines from oil filter adapter. Disconnect oil cooler line bracket at transmission, and move lines aside. Remove air cleaner bracket. NOTE: Carefully bleed fuel pressure at fuel line Schrader valve. Use a container to catch fuel.
5. Disconnect fuel lines at throttle body. Disconnect fuel line bracket at transmission and move fuel lines aside. Remove AIR valve with bracket. Remove pulley idler.
6. Remove power steering hose strap from stud bolt. Remove stud bolt. Remove AIR pipe clip. Remove power steering pump and belt tensioner with bracket, and move aside. Raise and support vehicle.
7. Remove drive plate covers. Disconnect starter wires and remove starter. Remove 3 drive plate-to-converter bolts. Remove A/C compressor lower dust shield. Remove right front tire and wheel assembly. Remove outer wheelhouse plastic shield.
8. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and lower compressor aside. Remove lower radiator hose. Remove driveline vibration damper with brackets from lower right front of engine and cradle. Pull alternator wire with plastic cover down, out of way. Remove 3 right front engine-to-transmission bracket bolts.
9. Remove 2 exhaust pipe-to-manifold bolts and springs. Remove the AIR pipe-to-converter bracket from the exhaust manifold stud. Remove lower right transaxle-to-engine bolt. Support engine.
10. Remove upper 5 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove 3 left front engine mount bracket-to-engine bolts. Remove engine.

To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal (All Other Models)

1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. On RWD models, remove 2 screws attaching radiator cover to strut support rods at radiator cover. Remove one screw from each side at strut. Move support rods aside.
2. On all models, remove 2 screws attaching top radiator shroud to radiator support. Remove rivets securing upper fan shroud to lower fan shroud.
3. Remove screws and washers attaching radiator cover to radiator support and remove cover. Remove 2 screws attaching power steering reservoir to upper fan shroud. Position reservoir aside and remove shroud.
4. After marking hinge location, remove hood. Remove air cleaner and inlet duct. Disconnect upper radiator hose from thermostat housing. Disconnect all wires at engine. Disconnect all vacuum hoses to engine. Disconnect accelerator linkage.
5. Disconnect vapor canister hose. Remove clutch fan assembly. Disconnect lower radiator hose at water pump. Disconnect A/C compressor from engine, and position aside with hoses attached. Remove hose from water nipple, located in rear of intake manifold. Disconnect fuel inlet and return lines.
6. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect engine oil cooler lines at radiator on RWD models or at junction on right side of engine compartment on FWD models. Remove 6 transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove front engine mount-to-frame crossmember nuts on FWD models and motor mount through bolts on RWD models.
7. On RWD models, disconnect strut rods connecting engine mounts to bellhousing. Remove drive plate cover. Remove drive plate- to-converter bolts. Disconnect starter motor wiring, engine ground wire, and oil pressure switch wiring. Support exhaust system. Disconnect exhaust system at manifolds.
8. Lower vehicle. Support transmission. Attach engine lift, using chain with spreader bar. Raise engine slowly to disengage from transmission and remove engine.

To install, reverse removal procedure.
