DTC B1025, B1035, B1045, or B1055

The digital radio antenna is connected to the digital radio receiver by 2 coax cables. One coax carries the satellite signal, the other coax carries the terrestrial signal. The antenna cable for the satellite antenna also provides a path for D.C. current for powering the antenna.

This test is run every 300 milliseconds.

The digital radio receiver detects an antenna fault.

The radio displays "No XM Signal."

The condition must be corrected.

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2: Early design modules support the mV reading while later design modules support the mA reading.
  2. 3: Due to current limiting capabilities in the module, an antenna cable shorted to ground could still show 1200-1800 mV.

Tools Required

J 39916-A CD and Cassette Diagnostic Audio Kit

Preliminary Inspections

IMPORTANTWhen testing the audio system for poor reception or noise, the vehicle should be outside away from metal buildings and utility lines, with the hood and rear compartment closed.
  1. Inspect for any aftermarket equipment that may have been installed on the vehicle. If aftermarket equipment is found, disconnect the equipment and verify that the audio noise is still present. Verify that the antenna connector and the antenna coaxial cable are clean and tight.
  2. For reception concerns, first determine if the customer is within the listening area of the stations they are attempting to receive.
  3. Stations at the lower end of the FM band are more susceptible to audio noises than stations at the higher end.
  4. If the noise is only from one speaker, inspect for the following items before speaker replacement: Isolate the noise using the J 39916-A . Inspect the speaker connections in order to ensure they are clean and tight. Refer to «Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/body-electrical/#wiring-systems-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__testing-for-intermittent-conditions-and-poor) in Wiring Systems. Inspect for a loose or incorrectly installed speaker or surrounding trim. Loose trim may cause a buzz or flutter which sounds like a malfunctioning speaker.
  5. Ignition noise on the FM band may be an indication of an ignition system problem.
  6. Verify that all vehicle grounds are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.
  7. Inspect the rear defogger grid lines for large breaks or dark spots.
  8. Inspect the connections at the radio antenna module, if equipped, in order to ensure that they are clean and tight.
  9. Compare the customers vehicle to another of similar model and audio system in order to determine if the condition is abnormal.

Identifying Concerns

  1. In order to isolate the source of the noise/poor reception, identify the ignition switch position that the concern is most noticeable: Turn the ignition switch to the accessory position. Turn ON the radio. Seek up 88 to 108 FM then 550 to 1600 AM. Record the number of valid radio stations where the tuner stops. Repeat these steps with the ignition ON, and the engine OFF, then repeat the steps again with the engine running.
  2. Return the ignition switch to the position that the concern was most noticeable.
  3. Remove the fuses or circuit breakers, one at a time, until the noise has been eliminated.
  4. Identify what systems or components are powered by the fuse.
  5. Reinstall all fuses and circuit breakers.
  6. Disconnect the components powered by the fuse, one at a time, until the concern has been eliminated.

Corrective Action

  1. Inspect the ground integrity of the component or system causing the noise.
  2. Malfunctioning and marginal components such as relays and solenoids may cause noise and/or poor reception.
  3. Always use a braided ground strap when applying additional grounds and keep the ground strap as short as possible.
  4. If the noise source is found to be coming from the vehicle harness: Route the antenna cable separately from the wire harness that is emitting the noise. Use aluminum or nickel tape in order to shield the antenna cable. Try variations of the following repairs: Try adding only aluminum or nickel tape before adding a ground strap to the tape. Wrap a ground strap 360 degrees around the tape, securing the other end of the strap to chassis ground. IMPORTANT: When installing suppression devices, signal wires such as sensor and communication circuits should not be suppressed. Battery and ignition voltage circuits are the best choices for suppressing.
  5. Capacitors work best on switch pops and low frequency noise.
  6. Filters work best on high frequency whines and static.
  7. After adding any suppression device, inspect all of the vehicle systems, including those not related to the audio system, for proper operation and function.
  8. Whenever possible, make a test harness that includes filters or capacitors. Always inspect the effectiveness and operation before permanent installation.
  9. If an audible pop is caused due to operating a switch, perform the following repairs as necessary: Add a capacitor across the contacts of the switch. Add a capacitor from the battery positive voltage (B+) side of the switch to chassis ground. Add a capacitor from the ground side of the switch to chassis ground.
  10. Use the following available noise suppression devices: 220 micro farad (50 volt) capacitor GM P/N 1227895 This works well for ignition system related noise. 0.47 micro farad capacitor GM P/N 1227894 This works well for switches and relays. Feed through capacitor GM P/N 477371 This works well for high current situations. Filter package GM P/N 1224205 This works well for low current situations. Fuel pump suppressor GM P/N 25027405 21 inch braided ground strap GM P/N 8910791 19 inch braided ground strap GM P/N 6286800 10.5 inch braided ground strap GM P/N 6287160 8.5 inch braided ground strap GM P/N 12091511

Generator Whine Concerns

  1. Inspect the ground terminal and cable for high resistance.
  2. Inspect the generator and brackets for loose or coated mounting bolts.
  3. Verify that the ground straps between the engine and the frame are clean and tight.
  4. If the noise is still present, inspect the charging system for proper operation. Refer to «Diagnostic System Check - Engine Electrical»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
  5. Install a filter GM P/N 1224205 in the battery voltage feed circuit to the radio.
  6. If the noise is not eliminated, install the filter in each following variation: Install the filter with the single wire side toward the radio and the ground wire attached to chassis ground. Remove the ground to the filter. Reverse the filter so that the two-wire side is toward the radio with the ground wire attached to chassis ground. Remove the ground from the filter.
  7. If the filter GM P/N 1224205 causes a delay when turning the radio ON or OFF, or other problems, remove the filter and install a 0.47 micro farad capacitor to chassis ground.
  8. Before reassembling the vehicle, remove any unneeded filters.
  9. Test the functionality of all the vehicle systems, including those not related to the audio system, for proper operation and function.

Always perform the Radio/Audio System Diagnostic System Check before proceeding with these diagnostic procedures. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Entertainment System .

Using a Test Antenna

Use a test mast antenna to quickly check for poor vehicle antenna operation. Unplug antenna lead-in connector from radio receiver and plug a test antenna into radio. Make sure the test antenna base is grounded to the vehicle chassis and keep hands off the mast. Check radio reception in an area away from electrical interferences. Tune to several weak and strong AM and FM stations. If the radio reception improved, the problem exists with the vehicle antenna and/or lead-in cable. If the reception is still poor, refer to Audio System Troubleshooting Hints .

  1. Many conditions that affect video system operation may be corrected without removing the radio, the digital video disc (DVD) player or the video entertainment overhead console from the vehicle. Make sure to understand all features of system operation before beginning the diagnosis of the system. Verify the condition and follow the diagnostic procedures in order to isolate and correct the condition.
  2. Be sure the vehicle battery is fully charged before beginning video entertainment system diagnosis.

Video or Audio Distortion

The manufacturing process for producing DVD's does not have the same quality control processes in place that compact disk manufacturing does. If there are video or audio quality problems with an individual DVD, try playing that disk in another DVD player. If the quality is poor for both players, return the disk to the place of purchase and request an exchange. If the quality problem is only seen in one of the players, examine the disk for scratches dirt or smudges and attempt to clean the disk with one of the disk cleaning systems that are commercially available.

Video or audio distortion during auxiliary playback can often be attributed to the DC to AC inverter that is used to power the auxiliary device. The power inverters tend to introduce noisy signals into the vehicle electrical system.

IMPORTANTThe following information lists the most probable cause of the concern to the least probable cause followed by the appropriate test for that condition.
  1. Volume control on the wireless headphone set is turned all the way down. Adjust the volume control on the headphones.

  3. Faulty headphone set. Test the operation of the system using a known good headphone set. If operation is OK, replace the vehicle headphone set.

The buttons on the video remote control do not operate the video disc player but the buttons on the video disc player operate normally.

Radio Signal

The radio signal is sent from a broadcast station and is then received by an antenna. The strength of the signal received depends on the following

  1. The power output, or wattage of the broadcasting station
  2. The location of the vehicle, or receiver relative to the broadcast tower.
  3. Obstacles between the tower and the receiver
  4. Atmospheric conditions
  5. What band, AM or FM the station is broadcasting
  6. Type of antenna and the ground plane

AM Reception

The AM band has a lower frequency range than the FM band. These longer wavelengths

  1. Bend around obstacles
  2. Follow the curvature of the earth
  3. May reflect off the ionosphere-skip

The AM frequencies have longer range due to the ground wave. The ground wave follows the curvature of the earth and is affected by its conductivity. Greater conductivity equates to less signal loss thus transmission over water is better than over land. The AM band has a range of 80-320 km (50-200 miles).

FM Reception

The shorter wavelengths of the higher frequency FM band

  1. Reflect off obstacles
  2. Are absorbed by the ground
  3. Penetrate the ionosphere

Broadcasts in the FM band are limited to "line of sight" reception which is typically 40 km (25 miles). Even when out of a direct line of sight, the signal may be reflected into areas that would be in a "shadow" otherwise. Factors which affect the line of sight include

  1. Height of the broadcast antenna
  2. Height of the receiving antenna
  3. Terrain and buildings in the broadcast path

XM Reception

XM satellite radio provides digital radio reception. The XM signal is broadcast from two satellites and, where necessary, terrestrial repeaters. The high power satellites allow the antenna to receive the XM signal even when foliage and other partial obstructions block the antennas view of the satellite. Terrestrial repeaters are used in dense urban areas. These repeaters will receive the satellite signal and re-broadcast them at much higher power levels in order to ensure reception in areas with densely packed tall buildings.

Antenna

The antenna is comprised of a very thin metal grid which is permanently affixed to the top center of the windshield. If the antenna becomes damaged, the windshield must be replaced.

Audio Amplifier

The purpose of an amplifier is to increase the power of a voltage or current signal. The output signal of an amplifier may consist of the same frequencies as the input signal or it may consist of only a portion of the frequencies of the input signal, as in the case of a subwoofer or a mid-range amplifier.

When the radio is turned on, the radio sends a voltage signal to the audio amplifier via the amplifier control circuit. The amplifier present signal circuit allows the radio to recognize that an amplifier is present. Once the radio detects the amplifier, the radio will output low level audio signals to the amplifier. With the amplifier enabled, the signal that drives the speakers is now amplified.

Theft Deterrent

The "Theftlock" theft deterrent system is a feature on all base and uplevel radios. There is no need to program a security code into the radio as in past model years. The theft deterrent system now utilizes class 2 serial data to determine if the radio is in the appropriate vehicle. Each time the radio receives the "run" power mode message, it compares the VIN information it has stored to the VIN information received from a module on the class 2 serial data circuit responsible for transmitting that information. If a mis-match occurs, the radio display will indicate to the user the radio is locked. Once this takes place, a DTC will set, the radio will not respond to any button presses and become inoperative. The 2 scenarios able to cause this condition are

  1. A radio is installed from another vehicle
  2. A module which communicates on the class 2 serial data circuit which supplies VIN information to the radio is replaced and not properly setup with the correct VIN information for that vehicle

The only way to unlock the radio is by using a scan tool. Always refer to the table in this section to diagnose the "Theftlock" DTC for further information.

Integral Multi Disc CD Changer (IMDX [Uplevel])

The Integral Multi Disc CD Changer has the capability of storing and playing up to 6 compact discs. The Integral Multi Disc CD Changer has a shock-absorbing system. Only under extreme operating temperatures or severe shock or vibration should the compact disc player skip or mute. If the customer travels an abnormally rough road, a skip condition may be normal. Test drive the vehicle on a normal road with a known good CD. If the condition is still present, replace the radio.

The use of CD lens cleaner discs is not advised, due to the risk of contaminating the lens of the CD optics with lubricants internal to the CD mechanism.

Single Disc Loading

To operate the Integral Multi Disc CD Changer in the single play mode, press and release the LOAD button and wait for the LED to the right of the disc door to turn green. Load a disc when the LED turns green. If the radio is ON, the disc will begin to play automatically. If the radio is OFF, press the LOAD button for the disc to play.

Multi Disc Loading

To operate the Multi Disc CD Changer in the multi disc mode, press and hold the LOAD button for 2 seconds. An audible beep will be heard and the LED to the right of the disc door begins to flash. The radio will also display the message "INSERT CD". When the LED stops flashing and turns green, load a disc. Once the disc is loaded the LED begins to flash again. The radio will also display the message "MULTI LOAD" to indicate the multi load mode has been initiated and the changer will begin accepting a disc for however many empty slots there may be. When the LED stops flashing and turns green, load another disc. Repeat this procedure to continue loading discs. The CD changer holds up to 6 discs.

When the changer is full, 6 discs are loaded, and the LOAD button is pressed, 3 audible beeps are heard and the message "CHANGER FULL" is displayed.

To play one of the CD's, press one of the preset buttons.

Removing CDs

Use the eject button, the button labeled CD to remove a disc or discs.

Perform the following to eject

  1. To remove a single disc, press and release the CD button. The message "REMOVE CD" is displayed.
  2. To remove multiple discs, press and release the CD button for 2 seconds. An audible beep is heard and the LED to the right of the disc door begins to flash indicating a disc is being ejected. The message "REMOVE CD" is displayed.
IMPORTANTPressing the CD button repeatedly, causes the radio receiver's 25 second eject timer to reset at each press of the button. This will cause the receiver to not eject a disc until the 25 second time period has elapsed.

Song List Feature

The Multi Disc CD Changer has a feature called Song List. This feature is capable of saving 20 track selections to a play list.

To save tracks into Song List, perform the following

  1. The disc player must be ON with at least one disc loaded.
  2. The message "S-LIST" should not be displayed on the radio. If "S-LIST" is present, press the SONG LIST button to turn it OFF.
  3. Select the desired disc by pressing the numbered push-button and then use the SEEK right arrow button to locate the track that you want to save. The track will begin to play.
  4. Press and hold the SONG LIST button for 2 or more seconds to save the track into memory. When SONG LIST is pressed an audible beep is heard. After 2 seconds of pressing SONG LIST continually, 2 audible beeps will sound to confirm that the track has been saved. The message "TRACK ADD" is displayed.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for saving other selections.

Remote Playback Device

The remote playback device is either installed at the factory or in some instances it is dealer installed. There are 3 types of remote playback devices, a multi disc remote CD changer, a single disc CD player and a cassette player. All 3 devices have a wiring harness which plugs into the back of the radio. The radio controls and communicates with the remote playback device through an entertainment and comfort (E & C) or Class 2 communication circuit.

Remote CD Changer (CDX)

The remote CD changer allows for multiple compact disks to be played continuously without having to manually change compact discs. Normal size discs may be played using the slots supplied in the magazine. The magazine must first be loaded with discs before it can played. To load CDs, insert the CDs from bottom to top, placing the discs in the magazine label side up. If a disc is loaded label side down, the disc will not play and an error will occur. Care should be used to align and insert the disc into one disc tray only. Repeat this procedure for loading all of the discs in the magazine. Once the discs are loaded into the magazine, push the magazine into the changer in the direction of the arrow marked on the magazine. When the CD magazine is loaded, the changer will begin checking for discs in the magazine. This will continue for up to one and a half minutes, depending on the number of discs loaded. To eject the magazine from the player, push the CD changer door. The door will open. Then press the eject button. NOTICE: If the CD magazine fails to eject after the EJECT button has been pressed, do not attempt to pry the magazine from the CD changer. Whenever a CD magazine with discs is loaded in the changer, the CD changer symbol will appear on the radio display. If the CD changer is checking the magazine for CDs, the CD symbol will flash on the display until the changer is ready to play.

Rear Seat Audio (RSA)

The rear seat audio (RSA) control allows the rear seat passengers to listen to a different music source than the front seat passengers. For example, the rear seat passengers may listen to the cassette or CD through headphones while the driver listens to the radio through the front speakers. The rear seat passengers have control of the volume for each headphone. The primary radio controls always override the RSA controls.

The remote radio control supply voltage circuit, from the radio, supplies voltage to the RSA control when the radio is ON. When the RSA control is turned ON, a voltage signal is sent back to the radio on the RSA enable circuit. After receiving the voltage signal, the radio is enabled to control RSA audio functions. The radio controls RSA functions through the remote radio control signal (RUI2) circuit, some vehicles may use a class 2 communication circuit. When the radio receives the enable signal the rear speakers are muted. This allows the user to listen to the audio through the headphones.

Seek (SEEK)

Press the SEEK button in order to seek to the next higher or lower station. The sound will mute when seeking another frequency. The SEEK button is inactive when the front radio is in the SEEK mode.

Power (PWR)

Press the PWR push button in order to turn the rear seat audio system ON or OFF. The rear speakers mute when the power is turned ON. The rear seat audio functions are operable even when the primary radio power is OFF.

Band Switching (AM/FM)

Press the AM/FM push button in order to select between (AM and FM) or (AM, FM1 and FM2) for radios with 2 FM bands. The selection appears on the display. If the front passengers are already listening to AM-FM, the rear seat audio controller will not switch between the bands and cannot change the frequency.

Source Switching (TAPE CD)

Press the TAPE CD push button in order to activate the source switching feature. There must be a cassette tape and/or compact disc in the player.

Preset Program (P.SET PROG)

Press the P.SET PROG button in order to select between pre-programmed station presets. The front passenger must be listening to something different for the P.SET PROG to operate.

Volume (VOL)

Rotate the volume control in order to increase or decrease the volume. The top VOL knob controls the top headphone and the bottom VOL knob controls the bottom headphone.

Radio Data System (RDS)

All uplevel audio systems are equipped with technology known as the radio data system (RDS). RDS is a system that sends data along with the audio of the FM station you are currently tuned to. RDS is a standard that defines how a FM broadcast station may send digital data along with the audio program. Think of it as a one-way wireless modem, allowing the broadcaster to send information about his program to your receiver.

RDS data is carried in what is known as a "subcarrier". A subcarrier is a frequency that the FM broadcaster is authorized to use to send data or other audio programs that are not audible in the main audio program. RDS information can be used to display program information and to control the radio.

To receive the RDS signal, all that is needed is an FM receiver with a RDS circuit. A special integrated circuit capable of dealing with the RDS signal is in the RDS circuit and passes it along to the receiver's microprocessor where it is decoded and acted upon.

In some cases, a radio station broadcasting incorrect information may cause the RDS features of the radio to appear to work improperly.

RDS Basic Information

  1. RDS functions are provided in the FM broadcast band only.
  2. RDS functions will only work with FM broadcast stations that are broadcasting RDS data.
  3. Not all FM Broadcast stations broadcast RDS data or offer all of the RDS services.
  4. RDS functions may not work properly when reception is weak, reception is of poor quality, or RDS is not implemented properly by the FM Broadcaster.

Displaying RDS Information

The RDS feature is always on. When tuned to a non-RDS station, the radio will display frequency information as you would normally expect. When tuned to a RDS station, the radio can operate as follows

  1. The radio will change from displaying the frequency of the FM station to displaying the call letters of the station or display the nickname of the station.
  2. Display the type of program.
  3. Display general information such as artist and song title, call in phone numbers, etc.

Viewing and Selecting RDS Information for Display

Press the TUNE knob once for less then 2 seconds when the radio displays the program service (PS) name and the frequency of the station will be displayed. Press the knob again, and the program type (P-Type) will be displayed. Pressed again, and the program type (PTY) name will be displayed, if the broadcaster is broadcasting one. The PTY name is an 8-character name that the broadcaster may use to further identify the type of programming currently being broadcast. Should you decide that Frequency, P-Type or PTY name is more desirable to display when tuned to an RDS station than the PS name, press the TUNE knob until the desired information is displayed, then press and hold for more than 2 seconds. A beep should be heard and the radio will now display the selected information whenever tuned to an RDS broadcaster. The radio will display frequency for all non-RDS broadcast stations.

Using RDS Program Types to Tune Radio

Listed are several ways on how to tune your radio using RDS program types.

The radio will now be configured to tune based on RDS data rather than frequency.

A Fast Way to Find a RDS Station In Your Listening Area

  1. Press the PROG TYPE or P-TYPE button, the radio displays the current P-Type to search for.
  2. Rotate the TUNE knob until the radio displays "ANY TYPE". Press the PROG TYPE or P-TYPE button again and the radio will now seek the first RDS Broadcaster of any kind that it can find in the FM band.

Finding a RDS Station By Specific Program Type

  1. Press the PROG TYPE or P-TYPE button, the radio will display the current P-Type to search for.
  2. Rotate the TUNE knob until the desired program type is shown in the display.
  3. Press the PROG TYPE or P-TYPE button and the radio will now seek the first RDS Broadcaster of the selected P-Type.

If the radio cannot find the desired P-Type, the radio displays "NONE" and will return to the last station you were listening to.

Using the INFO Feature

When the INFO icon appears in the radio display, a new text message is available for viewing. These text messages are from the RDS broadcaster to the listening public and may be general information such as artist and song title, call in phone numbers, etc.

How to view the INFO message

  1. To view the message when the INFO icon appears, press the INFO button to display the text message. If you do not press the INFO button again, the text message will automatically be displayed 8 characters at a time, 3 seconds between updates.
  2. To view the text message faster, press the INFO button for less than 1 second to scroll through the message at your own speed.
  3. The INFO icon disappears as soon as you press the INFO button. The INFO icon will appear when a new different message is received.
  4. To view the most recent received message, press the INFO icon at any time even if the icon does not appear in the display.

Controlling the Radio

RDS can control the radio when data the receiver can use responds to timely information performing the following

  1. Interrupt the playback of your cassette or CD for traffic or emergency bulletins.
  2. Search for stations by type of program.
  3. Automatically follow networked programming from transmitter to transmitter as you travel from one listening area to another.
  4. Set your clock to the time that the RDS broadcast station broadcasts.

Using the RDS Traffic Feature

Some RDS broadcasters may carry traffic information programming to inform you of current traffic conditions in your listening area and is indicated by the TRAF icon in the radio display. RDS enables the broadcaster to get this information to you even when you are listening to a tape or compact disc. This feature can be enabled or disabled by the listener. Press the TRAF button to find a station that claims to carry traffic information. You may do this even when playing a cassette tape or compact disc. This action will operate in the background without interrupting the current playback. If the radio is not currently tuned to an RDS traffic station, the radio will immediately seek an RDS traffic station. If the radio finds an RDS traffic station, the "TRAF" icon will appear on the radio display as will brackets around the [TRAF] icon. If the radio cannot find an RDS traffic station after searching through the entire FM band, the radio will display "NO TRAFFIC".

Traffic Interrupt Feature

Whenever the TRAF icon is displayed, the current FM station may also broadcast traffic announcements. Traffic announcements are reports of the current traffic conditions in the listening area of the tuned FM broadcasters.

Your radio can interrupt the playback of a cassette or compact disc by use of the traffic interrupt feature. The traffic interrupt feature is enabled when the TRAF icon is displayed.

If the broadcaster sends out a traffic announcement while you are listening to FM or in the playback mode, "TRAFFIC" will be displayed on the radio and the audio from the broadcaster will be heard. At the conclusion of the traffic announcement, the radio will return to the previous playback mode.

During the time the radio displays "TRAFFIC", you can adjust the volume of the traffic announcement. This will be the volume at which all future traffic announcements will be heard.

You can also interrupt a traffic announcement interrupt by pressing the TRAF button.

RDS Program Type Interrupts

When the program type feature is ON, all program types may be selected as interrupts. Perform the following to select a program type as an interrupt.

  1. Turn ON the radio.
  2. Select the program type.
  3. Press and hold the program type button, labeled PROG TYPE or P-TYPE, for 2 seconds while the program type is displayed.

When an interrupt is set, the display shows the program type followed by an asterisk and the brackets around the [P-TYPE] icon are illuminated.

To turn an interrupt OFF

  1. Select a program type marked as an interrupt.
  2. Press and hold the program type button, labeled PROG TYPE or P-TYPE, for 2 seconds. The program type will be unmarked by turning OFF the asterisk. If no other program type interrupts are set, the brackets around the [P-TYPE] icon are also turned off.

When a program type interrupt is set, the radio will wait for the current FM RDS station to change its program type to one of those selected as an interrupt. When the station program type changes to a program type interrupt setting then the interrupt is activated. If the radio is in a playback mode, an interrupt will cause the radio to switch to the FM band, display the program type followed by "INT", and adjust the volume to the last active interrupt volume. If the radio is in the FM mode when an interrupt occurs, only the volume will change. The radio resumes the mode that was active prior to the interrupt, when an interrupt ends. An interrupt in progress may be canceled by pressing the program type button or a mode button.

During a national or local emergency, a special program type interrupt message "ALERT!" is displayed. This special announcement will cancel all other RDS features that are in progress, such as a traffic announcement.

Alternate Frequency (AF) Switching

RDS permits broadcaster's to send information to the radio that allows the radio to automatically switch frequency to the best quality station in that broadcaster's network.

Since the radio is displaying the broadcaster call letters or nickname, the listener will not see the frequency during an AF switch unless you have changed the default display to be frequency instead of Program Service name.

To enable or disable AF switching perform the following

  1. Press and hold the AM/FM button for 2 seconds or more.
  2. The radio will display AF ON or AF OFF depending on the current condition of AF and a confirmation beep will be heard.

When AF is enabled and you recall a RDS station stored on preset, the radio determines if the station stored is of acceptable quality. If not, the radio checks all available AF's for your station. If the radio fails to locate your program, AF SEARCH will be displayed as the radio scans across the band looking for your program or an affiliated network. If the radio cannot find the original station or an acceptable alternate frequency NOT FOUND will be displayed and the radio returns to the original frequency for the preset.

RDS Clock Time

Broadcasters can choose to send clock time information in the RDS data. This information can be used to update the clock time on the radio. RDS clock time is broadcast once a minute. To set the clock using RDS clock data perform the following

  1. Press and hold the HR and MIN buttons together for 2 or more seconds to update the time.
  2. The display will show UPDATED after receiving the broadcasted time data.
  3. If the broadcaster is not broadcasting the time data, the radio will display NO UPDATE and the time remains unchanged.

Steering Wheel and Tailgate Audio Controls

Some audio functions are available using the steering wheel controls and/or tailgate audio controls. The steering wheel and tailgate audio controls are actually a resistor network which consists of multiple momentary contact switches and a series of resistors. The switches and resistor network is arranged so that each switch has a different resistance value. When a switch is pressed, a voltage drop occurs in the resistor network which produces a specific voltage value unique to the switch selected. These specific voltage values allow the radio to identify which switch has been pressed. The radio responds just as if the corresponding radio front panel button had been pressed.

The radio supplies voltage to the switches via the remote radio control supply voltage circuit, RSA/SWC power. The specific voltage signal from the switch is returned to the radio on the steering wheel controls signal circuit, RUI 1.

Tape/CD Player Error Messages

The radio displays an error when any of the following occurs.

  1. The radio will display error codes for the tape player and integral CD player.
  2. The radio will display the following tape player error codes for tight tape, broken tape, and wrapped tape. If these conditions are detected, the radio will switch to the radio mode and eject the tape. The error code will be displayed for 5 seconds, followed by the tuner display, then the default. E10-Tight tape. E11-Broken tape. E14-Wrapped tape.
  3. The radio will display the following integral CD player error codes. If one of these problems is detected, the unit will switch to the radio mode and eject the CD. The display will show TOD, if the unit is OFF, or display the radio frequency for 5 seconds, then the default, if the unit is on. E20-Optics focus error, maybe due to moisture. E21-Optics loss of tracking control, maybe due to blemishes on disc. E22-Load/Unload motor problem. E23-Communication problem.
