HVAC Module Assembly Replacement

Tools Required

1. J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers
2. J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector
3. J 37097-A Heater Hose Clamp Tool

1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to «REFRIGERANT RECOVERY AND RECHARGING»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging) .
2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM in Engine Cooling.
3. Remove the accumulator and evaporator tube nut.
4. Disconnect the hose connections from the evaporator.
5. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core using the J 37097-A.
6. Plug the heater core and evaporator opening to prevent leaking into the vehicle when removing the HVAC module assembly.
7. Remove the IP assembly. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
8. Remove the defroster duct screws.
9. Remove the defroster duct.
10. Disconnect the blower control module (1) electrical connector.
11. Disconnect the instrument panel to HVAC harness connector.
12. Remove the HVAC module retaining nuts (1-5).
13. Remove the HVAC module assembly.

1. Install the HVAC module assembly. NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
2. Install the HVAC module nuts to the dash (1-5). Refer to the illustration for the HVAC module fastener torque sequence. Tighten Tighten the nuts to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
3. Connect the blower control module (1) electrical connector.
4. Connect the instrument panel to HVAC module electrical connector.
5. Install the defroster duct.
6. Install the module mounting screws. Tighten Tighten the screws to 2.5 N.m (23 lb in).
7. Install the defroster duct to front of dash mounting nut. Tighten Tighten the nut to 9 N.m (65 lb in).
8. Install the IP assembly. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT in Instrument Panel Gages and Console.
9. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core using the J 38185.
10. Connect the evaporator and accumulator tube connections to the evaporator.
11. Install the evaporator tube nut. Tighten Tighten the nut to 24 N.m (18 lb ft).
12. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to «REFRIGERANT RECOVERY AND RECHARGING»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging) .
13. Leak test the component fittings using the J 39400-A.
14. Refill the engine coolant. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM in Engine Cooling.

1. Remove the HVAC module assembly. Refer to «HVAC MODULE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__hvac-module-assembly-replacement) .
2. Remove the seal from around the heater core and the evaporator tubes.
3. Remove the upper HVAC case screws.
4. Separate the HVAC module case halves.
5. Remove the evaporator core.

1. Add the proper amount of refrigerant oil to the evaporator. Refer to «Refrigerant System Capacities»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
2. Install the evaporator core.
3. Align and connect the HVAC module case halves. NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
4. Install the upper HVAC module case screws. Tighten Tighten the screws to 1.4 N.m (12 lb in).
5. Install the seal over the heater core and the evaporator pipes.
6. Install the HVAC module assembly. Refer to «HVAC MODULE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__hvac-module-assembly-replacement) .
