DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT - DOORS

Begin the system diagnosis with the DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - DOOR SYSTEMS . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information

  1. The identification of the control module(s) which command the system.
  2. The ability of the control module(s) to communicate through the serial data circuit.
  3. The identification of any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and their status.

The use of the Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2 Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition. Enabling the headlamps in this step verifies that a door module is not using an alternate path to ground through the switch illumination circuit.
  2. 4 The symptom list in Symptoms will determine the correct diagnostic procedure to use.
  3. 5 The presence of DTCs U1161, U1162, U1163 or U1170 indicate one or more of the door modules is not communicating on the power door serial data circuits.
  4. 6 The presence of other DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other system control module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed.

Scheme 67

Scheme 67: DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) LIST

Circuit Description

The switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is part of the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). This assembly contains a microprocessor which takes the signal generated by this switch and assigns a digital message to the switch signal. The DDSA then sends this message over the power door serial data link to the Driver Door Module (DDM). The DDM then either moves the left mirror or sends commands over the power door serial data link to the right front door module to move the right mirror.

Conditions For Running The DTC

The DDM must be powered for this DTC to set.

Conditions For Setting The DTC

If the driver door module receives the message that a mirror switch is closed for more than 30 continuous seconds, the driver door module sets a DTC.

Action Taken When The DTC Sets

The DDM ignores the continuous message from the driver door switch assembly for this switch. The DDM will not respond to the invalid mirror switch message as a command for either door mirror. The DDM will respond to all other valid switch messages.

Conditions For Clearing The DTC

When the switch message status changes, the DDM clears this current DTC and stores it as history. The history DTC will clear either after 50 OFF/ON ignition switch cycles without a repeated failure or in response to a scan tool command.

Scheme 68

Scheme 68: DTC B1562, B1567, B1572, Or B1577

The mirror position sensors are potentiometers powered by the door module for the mirror. The Driver Door Module (DDM) and the front Passenger Door Module (PDM), determine the horizontal and vertical position of their respective mirrors based on the signal voltages from the mirror position sensors. Each mirror has a vertical position sensor and a horizontal position sensor.

The DDM and the PDM must be powered, in communications with each other, and cannot have B1327 or B1328 set.

These DTCs will set if

  1. A mirror position sensor signal voltage is below 0.25 V for 2 seconds.
  2. A mirror position sensor signal voltage is above 4.75 V for 2 seconds.

Memory movements are disabled. Manual movements are not disabled.

The current DTC clears when the door module no longer senses the failure. The DTC is stored as a history DTC. The history DTC will clear either after 50 OFF/ON ignition cycles without a repeated failure or in response to a scan tool command.

Diagnostic Aids

If the Personalization Option in the Dash Integration Module (DIM) is activated on a vehicle that does not have the A45 Memory Mirrors option, DTCs B1583, B1593, B1613, and B1623 will be erroneously set. If these DTCs are set on a vehicle that does not have A45, refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) PROGRAMMING/RPO CONFIGURATION (DIM) or BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) PROGRAMMING/RPO CONFIGURATION (IPM) or BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) PROGRAMMING/RPO CONFIGURATION (RIM) in Body Control System to deactivate the option.

After readjusting the mirror positions, be sure to set the mirror memory switch to the new positions.

Scheme 70

Scheme 70

The switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is wired to either the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA) or the Passenger Door Module (PDM). The DDSA or the PDM includes the switch state in the message it sends to the Driver Door Module (DDM) via the power door serial data circuit. The DDM sends the switch message to the Rear Integration Module (RIM), which is the master of all lock operations, as a Class 2 message. The RIM checks all conditions and if all conditions are correct, sends its OK to the DDM. When the OK message is received, the DDM sends the required signal to all other door modules via the power door serial data message system.

The DDM and PDM must be powered, in communications with each other and cannot have B1327-Battery Voltage Low or B1328-Battery Voltage High set for these DTCs to set.

If the DDM receives the message that either a passenger door lock switch circuit is closed for more than 30 continuous seconds or a DDSA lock switch circuit is closed for more than 255 seconds (4.25 minutes), the DDM sets a lock switch circuit DTC.

The DDM ignores any message from the lock switch designated by the DTC and prevents lock movement from the switch. The DDM will respond to other lock switch messages.

The DDM clears this current DTC when the switch message is no longer received and stores a history DTC. The history DTC will clear either after 50 OFF/ON ignition switch cycles without a repeated failure or in response to a scan tool command.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2 Check the module input state using the normal input status.
  2. 3 Check to see that the input is seen by the module.
  3. 4 Check to see that the signal lines to the module are open with the switch removed.
  4. 5 Determine that the signal circuits are not shorted.

Scheme 71

Scheme 71: DTC B3142, B3147, B3152, Or B3157

The switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is wired to one of the passenger door modules. These modules contain a microprocessor which takes the signal generated by this switch and assigns a digital message to the switch signal. The door module then sends this message over the power door serial data link to the Driver Door Module (DDM).

The DDM and the passenger door modules all must both be powered and cannot have B1327-Battery Voltage Low or B1328-Battery Voltage High set for one of these DTCs to set. If one of the DTCs indicating a loss of communications with a door module is set, the setting of DTCs from that module is prohibited.

If the Driver Door Module (DDM) receives a message indicating that a window switch is closed for more than 15 continuous seconds from a passenger door module, the DDM sets the DTC.

The action taken depends on which switch is closed

  1. If an UP switch is closed for more than 15 seconds, both UP and DOWN movement is prohibited until the UP switch is no longer closed, or, the power mode changes from OFF to RUN.
  2. If a DOWN switch is closed for more than 15 seconds, the DOWN movement is prohibited until the DOWN switch is no longer closed, or, the power mode changes from OFF to RUN. UP movements are permitted regardless of the DOWN switch state.

The DDM clears this current DTC when the switch message is not received, or when the module power mode changes from OFF to RUN, and stores the DTC as history. The history DTC will clear either after 50 OFF/ON ignition switch cycles without a repeated failure, or in response to a scan tool command.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2 Check the module input state using the normal input status.
  2. 3 Check to see that the input is seen by the module
  3. 4 Check to see that the signal lines to the module are open with the switch removed.
  4. 5 Check to see that the signal circuits are not shorted.

Scheme 72

Scheme 72

The switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is part of the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). The DDSA contains a microprocessor which takes the signal generated by this switch and assigns a digital message to it. The DDSA then sends this message over the power door serial data circuit to the Driver Door Module (DDM).

The DDM must be powered and cannot have DTCs B1327-Battery Low Voltage or B1328-Battery High Voltage set for this DTC to set.

If the Driver Door Module (DDM) receives the message that a DDSA window switch is closed for more than 15 continuous seconds the DDM sets this DTC.

  1. If the UP switch is closed for more than 15 seconds, both UP and DOWN movement is prohibited from the DDSA.
  2. If the DOWN switch is closed for more than 15 seconds, DOWN movement is prohibited while UP movement is permitted from the DDSA.
  3. If an express switch DTC is set, express function is disabled but regular window functions are not affected.
  4. All windows will operate normally from their associated passenger door window switch.

The DDM clears this current DTC when the switch signal is no longer received. The DTC is stored as a history DTC. The history DTC will clear either after 50 OFF/ON cycles of the ignition switch without a repeated failure, or in response to a scan tool command.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2 Check the module input state using the normal input status.
  2. 3 Check to see that the input is seen by the module.

Scheme 73

Scheme 73

The switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is part of the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). The DDSA contains a microprocessor which takes the signal generated by this switch and assigns a digital message to it. The DDSA then sends this message over the power door serial data circuit to the Driver Door Module (DDM).

The DDM must be powered and cannot have DTCs B1327-Battery Low Voltage or B1328-Battery High Voltage set for this DTC to set.

If the Driver Door Module (DDM) receives the message that the lockout switch is closed for more than 30 continuous seconds the DDM sets this DTC.

When the lockout switch DTC is set, the DDSA and DDM default to the last valid switch input. If the last valid input was to enable lock out, the indicator LED will be lit and the passenger windows will not operate from the passenger window switches. If the last valid input was to disable lock out, the indicator LED will not be lit and the passenger windows will operate from the passenger window switches.

The DDM clears this current DTC when the switch signal is no longer received. The DTC is stored as a history DTC. The history DTC will clear either after 50 OFF/ON cycles of the ignition switch without a repeated failure or in response to a scan tool command.

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2 Checks the existing state of the driver door window switch assembly passenger window lockout switch by using the current state of the input parameter.

Scheme 74

Scheme 74

The power door serial data circuit provides a means for information exchange among the vehicle door modules. Door module information on inputs and commanded outputs are converted to power door serial data for exchange among the door modules. The Drivers Door Module (DDM) can also take information from modules connected to the class 2 serial data circuit and relay the command to the power door serial data link. The vehicle power mode message (ignition switch position) from the DIM is an example. The DDM periodically addresses each module on the power door serial data circuit. When a module does not respond to the DDM, the DTC for that module is set.

  1. Diagnostic trouble codes B1327, B1328, U1300, and U1301 do not have a current status.
  2. The driver door module has power.
  3. The driver door module has received an input, a power door serial data message, or a class 2 "wake-up" message.

A response from a door module on the power door serial data circuit is not received by the DDM within 2 seconds of the DDM request for a response from a door module or the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA).

  1. A current DTC will clear when a response message from the failed door module is detected or at the end of the current ignition cycle.
  2. A history DTC will clear upon receipt of a scan tool Clear DTCs command or after 50 OFF/ON ignition switch cycles without a repeat of a communications failure.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 1 Diagnostic trouble codes U1161, U1162, U1163, and U1170 set simultaneously indicate a total malfunction of the power door serial data circuit.
  2. 2 When DTCs U1161, U1162, and U1163 set simultaneously but U1170 does not set, the malfunction is likely to be caused by an open in the power door serial data circuit between the DDM and splice S302.
  3. 4 The open in the power door serial data circuit is between the DDM and splice S302.
  4. 5 Loss of communications with individual modules may be due to an unpowered module. This includes the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA), which is also a module. The rear door modules each have a separate battery positive voltage circuit (connectors C1), but they are both fed by the same 10 amp RRDRMDL fuse in the rear fuse block. A short to ground in either one of the rear door module battery positive voltage circuits (connectors C1) may open the fuse and cause DTCs 1)1162 and U1163 to be set simultaneously.
  5. 6 Loss of communications with individual modules may be due to an ungrounded module. This includes the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA), which is also a module.
  6. 8 The power door serial data circuit is shorted to voltage or ground, The condition may be due to the wiring or due to a malfunction in one of the modules. When testing the wiring for a short, make sure there is not a module connected to the wire being tested.
  7. 10 Operating the window and locks from the scan tool via the class 2 serial data circuit proves that the DDM is capable of controlling the driver door functions and isolates the cause of the malfunction to the power door serial data circuit.
  8. 11 The Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA) processes driver door window and lock switch signals to the DDM. Since the DDM was proven capable in step 10, the malfunction must be due to the DDSA.
  9. 12 The following steps isolate the door module which is preventing power door serial data communications.

CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES

Do not connect aftermarket accessories into the following circuits

  1. SIR circuits, all such circuits are indicated on circuit diagrams with the SIR symbol.
  2. OBD II circuits, all such circuits are indicated on circuit diagrams with the OBD II symbol.

Always check for aftermarket accessories (non-OEM) as the first step in diagnosing electrical problems. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the system to verify that these add-on accessories are not the cause of the problems.

Possible causes of vehicle problems related to aftermarket accessories include

  1. Power feeds connected to points other than the battery.
  2. Antenna location.
  3. Transceiver wiring located too close to vehicle electronic modules or wiring.
  4. Poor shielding or poor connectors on antenna feed line.
  5. Check for recent service bulletins detailing installation guidelines for aftermarket accessories.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2 Determines if this is the correct chart for the symptom.
  2. 6 This step determines if a door module is internally shorted to ground, or the door module battery positive voltage circuit is shorted to ground.

Scheme 78

Scheme 78

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 3 This step determines if the DDM receives the lockout switch request from the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA).
  2. 4 This step determines if the indicator is operating properly.

Scheme 81

Scheme 81

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 3 This step checks to see that the door module associated with the inoperative window recognizes the switch input. Enabling the headlamps in this step eliminates the possibility of the window switch using an alternative path to ground through the switch illumination circuit, which could cause the scan tool to display incorrect window switch states.
  2. 4 This step determines if the Express Down function of the window switch, if applicable, has failed.
  3. 5 This step eliminates the battery positive voltage and ground circuits associated with door module connector C3 for the front passenger door, or, associated with door module connector C2 for a rear door as the cause.
  4. 9 This step eliminates the window switch as the cause of the malfunction.
  5. 14 This step eliminates the switch ground circuit as the cause.
  6. 15 This step eliminates the switch Up or Down signal circuits as the cause.

Scheme 86

Scheme 86

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 3 This step determines if there is a rear door lock actuator control circuit shorted to ground, a condition which could open the RRDR MDL fuse located in the rear fuse block and set DTCs U1162 and U1163 simultaneously current when the rear door lock actuator is actuated.
  2. 4 Turning ON the headlamps in this step eliminates the possibility of the inoperative door lock switch finding an alternative path to ground through the switch illumination circuit, a condition which could result in the scan tool displaying incorrect lock switch states.
  3. 5 This step begins to determine if the lock switch or lock switch circuits are the cause of the malfunction. If the 3 amp jumper wire fuse opens when the jumper wire is connected, test the appropriate lock switch signal circuits for a short to battery voltage.
  4. 7 This step determines if the door lock actuator unlock circuit may be the cause of the malfunction. If the test lamp is already illuminated before operating the lock switch to Unlock, test the door lock actuator unlock circuit for a short to battery voltage.
  5. 8 This step determines if the door lock actuator lock circuit may be the cause of the malfunction. If the test lamp is already illuminated before operating the lock switch to Lock, test the door lock actuator lock circuit for a short to battery voltage.
  6. 16 This step directs you to, either inspect for poor connections at the passenger door module, or, at the driver door switch assembly as a pre-requisite to replacing the passenger door module or driver door switch assembly. This is because lock switch signals for the driver door are detected and processed by the driver door switch assembly, while lock switch signals for the passenger door are detected and processed by the passenger door module.
  7. 21 This step directs you to, either replace the passenger door module or driver door switch assembly. This is because lock switch signals for the driver door are detected and processed by the driver door switch assembly, while lock switch signals for the passenger door are detected and processed by the passenger door module.

Power Windows System Components

The following components are used to control the power windows

  1. Driver Door Module (DDM).
  2. Passenger Front Door Module (PDM).
  3. LH Rear Door Module (LRDM).
  4. RH Rear Door Module (RRDM).
  5. Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA).
  6. RH Front Power Window Switch.
  7. LH Rear Power Window Switch.
  8. RH Rear Power Window Switch.
  9. LH Front Power Window Motor.
  10. RH Front Power Window Motor.
  11. LH Rear Power Window Motor.
  12. RH Rear Power Window Motor.
  13. PWR WDO 30 Amp Circuit Breaker.

Power Windows Operation

The vehicle is equipped with power windows controlled by the door modules. Each passenger door power window can be operated, either from a switch built into the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA), or from a switch mounted locally on its associated door.

The driver door power window can only be operated from the driver door window switch built into the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA).

When the Driver Door Module (DDM) receives a window switch request from the DDSA, the DDM checks the Class 2 serial data to see if the status information is correct (i.e. ignition switch position) to permit window operation to occur. If the status information is correct, the DDM, either supplies power and ground to its associated window motor, or, if the request is for one of the passenger windows, sends a command via the power door serial data circuit to the Passenger Door Module (PDM, LRDM, or RRDM) controlling the window. The Passenger Door Module (PDM, LRDM, or RRDM) controlling the window then supplies power and ground to its associated window motor to move the window as requested.

When one of the local window switches mounted on one of the passenger doors is operated, the associated door module examines the request and checks to see if there are any messages from the DDM prohibiting the movement. If conditions are correct, and no prohibitive messages have been received from the DDM, the associated door module then supplies power and ground to its associated window motor to move the window as requested.

Windows Power & Ground

Each door module has its own battery positive voltage supply circuit to use for power window operation, but they are all fed by the same 30 amp power window circuit breaker located in the rear fuse block. Each door module also has a separate ground circuit to use for power window operation. These circuits are in the same dedicated connector as the window motor drive circuits of each door module.

Window Motors

Each door module supplies battery positive voltage and ground, through the window motor drive circuits, to its associated window motor. The window motors are reversible. The direction the window moves depends on which motor drive circuit the battery positive voltage is applied to, and which motor drive circuit the ground is applied to. To move the window in the Up direction, the module applies battery positive voltage to the window motor Up drive circuit, and ground to the window motor Down drive circuit. When a window movement in the opposite direction is needed, the module reverses the polarity and supplies power and ground to the opposite circuits to move the window in the reverse direction.

Windows Express Down Feature

The front door windows have the Express Down feature. This allows the front windows to be fully opened by momentarily pressing the appropriate window switch to the second detente of the Down position.

Window Lockout Feature

The window lockout switch is built into the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). The lockout function can be programmed to prevent both rear windows from being operated from their locally mounted switches, or, to prevent all of the passenger windows from being operated from their locally mounted switches. When the lockout switch is pressed momentarily, the LED indicator is illuminated, and the DDSA receives the switch signal. The DDSA sends a message over the power door serial data line to the Driver Door Module (DDM) indicating that the switch is active. The DDM then sends a message over the power door serial data line to both rear door modules to prohibit the rear windows from being operated from the rear door window switches, or, sends the message to all of the passenger doors to prohibit all passenger windows from being operated from their respective switches. When the lockout function has been activated, the windows can still be operated from the driver door by using the window switches built into the DDSA.

Power Door Lock Components

The power door lock system consists of the following components

  1. Driver door lock switch.
  2. Passenger door lock switch.
  3. Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA).
  4. Driver Door Module (DDM).
  5. Passenger Door Module (PDM).
  6. Left Rear Door Module (LRDM).
  7. Right Rear Door Module (RRDM).
  8. Driver door lock actuator.
  9. Passenger door lock actuator.
  10. Left rear door lock actuator.
  11. Right rear door lock actuator.
  12. Driver door cylinder unlock switch.
  13. Passenger door cylinder unlock switch.
  14. DRVMDL Fuse (10 amp).
  15. PASS MDL Fuse (10 amp).
  16. RRDR MDL Fuse (10 amp).

Door Lock System Controls

The power door lock system can be controlled by any of the following

  1. A power door lock switch activation.
  2. A keyless entry transmission.
  3. A driver door key cylinder unlock switch activation.
  4. A passenger door key cylinder unlock switch activation.
  5. An automatic door lock function.

Power Door Lock Operation

The vehicle is equipped with power door locks. Each lock actuator is powered and controlled by the door module mounted in the individual door. The Driver Door Module (DDM) is the master control for the door lock system but the Rear Integration Module (RIM) determines when the lock functions are permitted.

The passenger front door interior lock switch is wired to the Passenger Front Door Module (PDM). The driver door interior lock switch is wired to the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). Interior lock switches are not provided for the rear doors. The DDSA and the PDM send the lock switch requests to the Driver Door Module (DDM) over the power door serial data circuit. The DDM then sends the lock requests to the RIM over the Class 2 serial data circuits.

The door lock operation modes are controlled by the RIM. The RIM examines the requested function from the DDM, or the Remote Function Actuator (RFA), as well as the transmission shift selector position and the ignition switch position information available over the Class 2 serial data circuits. If the RIM determines that a lock or unlock function is permitted, it sends a class 2 message back to the DDM commanding the DDM to perform that function. The DDM then sends commands to the rest of the door modules via the power door serial data circuit to implement the selected locking function.

Power Door Lock Motors

Each door module supplies battery positive voltage and ground, through the door lock actuator motor drive circuits to its associated door lock actuator motor. The power door lock motors are reversible. The function performed by the lock motor (Lock or Unlock), depends on which motor drive circuit the battery positive voltage is applied to, and which motor drive circuit the ground is applied to. To perform a lock function, the module applies battery positive voltage to the door lock motor Lock circuit, and ground to the door lock motor Unlock circuit. To perform a Unlock function, the module reverses the polarity and applies battery positive voltage to the door lock motor Unlock circuit, and ground to the door lock motor Lock circuit.

Front Passenger Door Power Lock Switch

In order to receive a signal from its associated door lock switch, the front passenger door module supplies battery positive voltage and ground to the switch. Their are two circuits for battery positive voltage, one for a lock signal, and one for an unlock signal. The module supplies ground to the switch via a third circuit. When the switch is activated for a lock or unlock function, voltage flows through the switch, providing the module with the necessary signal input.

Driver Door Power Lock Switch

The driver door lock switch is the same as the passenger door lock switch, but it is wired to the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA), and, for a ground circuit, to the driver door module. It also works the same way as the passenger lock switch works, but the switch signal input information is detected and processed by the DDSA. The DDSA has two circuits that supply 5 volts to the driver door lock switch, one for a lock signal, and one for an unlock signal. The driver door lock switch ground circuit is provided by the driver door module. When the door lock switch is activated, the voltage that flows through it is detected by the DDSA. The DDSA then relays the switch information to the driver door module via the power door serial data circuit.

Automatic Door Locks

The automatic door lock system provides for locking or unlocking all or one of the doors when shifting the transmission in and out of PARK, or, when turning the ignition key to the OFF position. This system is commanded according to the information stored in the RIM. The RIM receives the features selected by the driver from the Driver Information Center (DIC). The RIM commands the Driver Door Module (DDM) which in turn commands the individual passenger door modules. For customized selections available and programming instructions, refer to PERSONALIZATION DESCRIPTION & OPERATION in Personalization.

Anti-Lockout feature

Leaving the key in the ignition with any door open will disable the use of the power door locks and the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) lock function.

The anti-lockout feature can be overridden by holding the lock switch in the LOCK position for more than 3 seconds.

Central Door Unlock

The central door unlock feature is activated when the driver door key is inserted into, either the driver door lock cylinder, or, the front passenger door lock cylinder, and turned to the Unlock position. The doors will unlock when either of the following happens

  1. The DDM sees that its door cylinder switch is continuously closed for longer than 3 seconds.
  2. The DDM sees that its door cylinder switch is closed twice in 3 seconds.
  3. The PDM sends a message over the power door serial data circuit to the DDM indicating that the passenger door cylinder switch is continuously closed for longer than 3 seconds.
  4. The PDM sends a message over the power door serial data circuit to the DDM indicating that the passenger door cylinder switch has been closed twice in 3 seconds.

The DDM sends a Class 2 message to the RIM indicating the above. The RIM sends a Class 2 message to the DDM to unlock all doors. The DDM sends a power door serial data message to the other door modules to unlock all doors.

The door cylinder switches are a built in part of each doors actuator assembly and are wired to either, the Driver Door Module (DDM) or the front Passenger Door Module (PDM). Each door cylinder switch is connected to its exterior door key cylinder by means of a mechanical rod. Each door module supplies battery positive voltage through the door key switch signal circuit, and ground via a ground circuit to the normally open contacts of its respective switch. When the switch is closed, voltage flows through the switch, providing the door module with the necessary signal input.

Delayed Locking feature

This personalization feature permits the delay of all door locking until 5 seconds after the last door is closed. This feature is controlled by the RIM which operates based on data received over the Class 2 serial data circuits.

  1. When the lock function is requested (either by the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) or the DDM) while the drivers door is open and the ignition key is removed from the ignition, the RIM commands the radio, via the Class 2 serial data circuit, to sound the chime 3 times to signal that the delayed locking is active.
  2. When the DDM detects that the driver door is closed, and receives the message from the other door modules that their respective doors are also closed, it sends a Class 2 message to the RIM.
  3. The RIM waits for 5 seconds, then sends the Class 2 message to the DDM to lock doors. The DDM sends the power door serial data message to the rest of the door modules to lock the doors. If a door is opened during the 5 second delay period, the RIM resets the timer and waits until it again receives the doors closed message from the DDM to restart the delay period. Pressing a power lock switch on a door or on the remote transmitter for the RFA causes the RIM to override this feature and lock all doors immediately. To program the delayed locking feature, refer to «PERSONALIZATION DESCRIPTION & OPERATION»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system__personalization-description-operation) in Personalization.

Outside Mirror System Components

The power outside mirror system consists of the following components

  1. Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA).
  2. Driver Door Module (DDM).
  3. Passenger Door Module (PDM).
  4. Driver outside mirror.
  5. Passenger outside mirror.
  6. Power door serial data circuit.
  7. DRV MDL 10A fuse, door module logic and internal driver operation.
  8. PASS MDL 10A fuse, door module logic and internal driver operation.

Driver & Passenger Outside Mirror Operation

In order to control outside rear view mirror adjustments, two switches are contained within the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). The DDSA contains a built in mirror select switch and a built in mirror position switch. The DDSA reports the switch activity to the Driver Door Module (DDM) via the power door serial data circuit.

The mirror select switch is used to select which mirror, left or right, is to be moved.

The mirror position switch is used to move the mirror that has been selected to the desired position.

When the mirror position switch is activated in a Up, Down, Left, or Right direction, the DDSA recognizes the input and sends this data on to the DDM.

Depending on which mirror has been selected for adjustment, the DDM either moves the driver door mirror to the requested position, or sends a power door serial data message to the Passenger Door Module (PDM) indicating that the passenger door mirror needs to be moved. The PDM then moves the passenger door mirror to the requested position.

Each mirror has two reversible motors for position adjustment. The door modules control the reversible motors by supplying battery positive voltage (B+) and ground to these motors.

LH Mirror

For a LH mirror left movement, the driver door module supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the left mirror motor left circuit, and ground via the left mirror motor right circuit to the LH mirror horizontal motor. For a LH mirror right movement, the driver door module reverses the polarity and supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the left mirror motor right circuit, and ground via the left mirror motor left circuit to the LH mirror horizontal motor. For a LH mirror up movement, the driver door module supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the left mirror motor up circuit, and ground via the left mirror motor down circuit to the LH mirror vertical motor. For a LH mirror down movement, the driver door module reverses the polarity and supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the left mirror motor down circuit, and ground via the left mirror motor up circuit to the LH mirror vertical motor.

RH Mirror

For a RH mirror left movement, the passenger door module supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the right mirror motor left circuit, and ground via the right mirror motor right circuit to the RH mirror horizontal motor. For a RH mirror right movement, the passenger door module reverses the polarity and supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the right mirror motor right circuit, and ground via the right mirror motor left circuit. For a RH mirror up movement, the passenger door module supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the right mirror motor up circuit, and ground via the right mirror motor down circuit to the RH mirror vertical motor. For a RH mirror down movement, the passenger door module reverses the polarity and supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via the right mirror motor down circuit and ground via the right mirror motor up circuit.

Memory Mirrors (A45) Personalization Option

The vehicle may be equipped with the "personalization package" containing memory seats and memory mirrors. However, the front door modules cannot perform memory mirror functions unless the Personalization Option is activated. The Dash Integration Module (DIM) stores the vehicles Personalization Option setting provided at the assembly plant. The DIM reports this Personalization Option setting to both front door modules, as well as other receiving modules, each time the ignition switch is cycled to RUN. The front door modules then store the Personalization Option setting and examine it before making a memory mirrors adjustment.

The Personalization Option setting stored within the front door modules will not change until the Personalization Option setting within the DIM is changed and the ignition switch then cycled to RUN

If the Personalization Option is activated on a vehicle that is not equipped with A45, the door modules will erroneously set DTCs B1583, B1593, B1613, and B1623.

Memory Mirrors (A45) Operation

The vehicle may be equipped with the "personalization package" containing memory seats and memory mirrors. The memory mirrors are controlled by the Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA), the Driver Door Module (DDM), and the Passenger Door Module (PDM). The DDSA is used in decoding memory switch activations and the door modules are used to store mirror position information and move the mirrors.

When a mirror position is programmed into the personalization package, the door modules store the position information and assign it to the personalization code. During a memory recall, that personalization code is retrieved by the modules. The modules then check the current position of the mirrors and move them to the position matching the retrieved code.

Each mirror is equipped with 2 potentiometer type position sensors and circuits that provide constant information, in the form of feedback voltage, to each door module indicating the position of the mirrors on their horizontal and vertical axis. The mirror position sensors are attached to each mirror motor's transmission cable. When the cable rotates, the resistance of the sensors vary and the feedback voltage is monitored by the appropriate door module to determine the mirrors position. The sensor feedback voltage varies from 0.25 volts to 4.75 volts. Each door module also supplies reference voltage through a 5-volt reference circuit, and ground through a memory seat/mirror sensor low reference circuit to their respective mirror position sensors.

The driver door module receives feedback voltage from the LH mirror horizontal position sensor through the left mirror horizontal position sensor signal circuit and feedback voltage from the LH mirror vertical position sensor through the left mirror vertical position sensor signal circuit.

The passenger door module receives feedback voltage from the RH mirror horizontal position sensor through the right mirror horizontal position sensor signal circuit and feedback voltage from the RH mirror vertical position sensor through the right mirror vertical position sensor signal circuit.

When a memory Set command is received, each door module records the motor positions by storing the feedback voltage of their respective position sensors. When a memory Recall command is received. Each door module moves the motors until the position sensor feedback voltages equal the feedback voltages stored in memory.

Memory Mirrors (A45) Parallel Parking Mode

If the vehicle is equipped with memory mirrors, it is equipped with the parallel parking mode feature. For this feature, the driver door module communicates with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) over the class 2 data link. When the gear selector is shifted to reverse, the PCM transmits this status via a class 2 message to the driver door module. The driver door module sends this message on to the passenger door module over the power door serial data circuit. The Passenger Front Door Module (PDM) then supplies battery positive voltage and ground to the vertical motor of the RH outside rear view mirror to tilt the mirror down 7 degrees. This allows the driver to see the curb while parallel parking.

Heated Mirrors

The mirrors heat during the defrost/defog cycles for the rear window. The heated mirrors are connected to the Driver Door Module (DDM) and the Passenger Front Door Module (PDM). The DDM receives a class 2 message from the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) via the Rear Integration Module (RIM) commanding the heated mirrors ON. The DDM also examines information from the Dash Integration Module (DIM) to determine if vehicle conditions are correct for the heated mirrors function to occur. If conditions are correct, the DDM then commands the driver side mirror heater ON, and sends a power door serial data message to the Passenger Front Door Module (PDM) to command the passenger side mirror heater ON.

The DDM supplies battery positive voltage to the LH outside rearview mirror heating element via the feed circuit, and ground via the return circuit.

The PDM supplies battery positive voltage to the RH outside rearview mirror heating element via the feed circuit, and ground via the return circuit.

Automatic Day/Night Feature Operation

The automatic day/night feature of the driver outside rearview mirror is controlled by the inside rearview mirror. The inside rearview mirror supplies a signal and a low reference to the driver outside rearview mirror. The voltage on the signal circuit of the driver outside rearview mirror varies between 0.5-1.5 volts depending on light conditions present at the inside rearview mirror. At night, with the automatic day-night feature enabled, the driver outside rearview mirror will automatically darken with the inside rearview mirror to reduce the glare from the headlamps from behind. The voltage on the signal circuit of the driver outside rearview mirror will be near 1.5 volts. In the daytime, the mirrors are in a normal state. The voltage on the signal circuit of the driver outside rearview mirror may be less than or near 0.5 volts. Refer to INSIDE REARVIEW MIRROR DESCRIPTION & OPERATION in Stationary Windows for further description and operation of the inside rearview mirror.
