Engine Removal Buick Electra VI

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. To trouble shoot engine mechanical components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

2.0L (122") 4-CYLINDER VIN K OR M

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system and remove radiator hoses. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect electrical harness at firewall. Disconnect electrical connector at brake cylinder.
  2. Disconnect wiring at Electronic Control Module (ECM), temperature switch at thermostat housing, and A/C relay cluster switches. Disconnect vacuum hoses at Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, canister, and Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI).
  3. Remove power steering hoses at pump return port and cut-off switch. Disconnect accelerator cable at bracket and EFI. Disconnect shifter cable at transmission. Raise and support vehicle.
  4. Remove speedometer cable and bracket. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and converter. Remove heater hoses and fuel lines. Remove transaxle cooler lines.
  5. Remove both front wheels. Remove right spoiler section and splash shield. Remove front brake calipers and support with wire. Remove right and left tie rod ends.
  6. Disconnect electrical connections at A/C compressor. Remove A/C compressor and mounting brackets. Support A/C compressor with wire in wheel opening. Remove front suspension attaching bolts. CAUTION: Be sure to support vehicle and transaxle weight during following steps.
  7. Lower vehicle. Support front of vehicle by placing 2 jack stands under radiator core support. Position jack at rear of cowl with 4" x 4" x 6' timber spanning vehicle width. Raise and support vehicle enough to remove jack stands.
  8. Position 4-wheel dolly under transaxle assembly with three 4" x 4" x 12" blocks as support. Let support rails hang free.
  9. Slightly lower vehicle onto 4-wheel dolly. Remove rear transaxle mounting bolts. Remove left front engine mounting bolts. Remove 2 engine support-to-body mounting bolts behind right-hand inner axle universal joint.
  10. Remove one mounting bolt and nut from right-hand chassis side rail-to-engine mount bracket. Remove 6 strut attaching nuts. Disconnect stabilizer bar from lower control arms. Raise and support vehicle, letting engine, transaxle, and suspension rest on 4-wheel dolly.

2.0L (122") 4-CYLINDER VIN 1

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system and disconnect radiator hoses. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect accelerator and TV cables at throttle body. Disconnect ECM harness at engine.
  2. Disconnect all vacuum hoses and heater hoses at engine. Remove exhaust heat shield, A/C adjustment bolt at motor mount, windshield washer bottle, and engine wiring harness at bulkhead.
  3. Remove all drive belts. Disconnect fuel hoses. Raise and support vehicle. Remove A/C compressor brace (if equipped). Remove inner fender and flywheel splash shield. Remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside. Remove starter wires, front starter brace, and starter. Remove torque converter bolts (if equipped).
  4. Remove crankshaft pulley, hub and oil filter. Disconnect engine-to-transmission support bracket. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and center hanger. Loosen muffler hanger. Remove TV/shift cable bracket.
  5. Remove 2 lower bellhousing bolts. Lower vehicle. Remove right front motor mount nuts. Remove alternator and adjusting brace. Remove master cylinder from booster and support out of the way. Attach lifting device. Remove right front motor mount bracket.
  6. Disconnect upper bellhousing bolts. Remove power steering pump while lifting engine. Remove engine.

Somerset

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain engine coolant. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect ECM connections and feed harness through bulkhead. Disconnect engine wiring harness. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses.
  2. Disconnect A/C compressor. Leave hoses attached and move compressor aside. Disconnect transaxle strut (front). Disconnect fuel lines at TBI. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, disconnect cooler lines and shifter linkage. On manual transmission equipped vehicles, disconnect clutch and shifter linkage.
  3. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, disconnect downshift cable. On all models, disconnect throttle cable at TBI. Disconnect engine grounds. Remove multi-relay bracket. Raise and support vehicle. Remove power steering line bracket from engine.
  4. Remove front wheels. Disconnect brake calipers and tie to springs. Remove brake rotors. Remove 2 knuckle-to-strut bolts per side. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and hangers and swing aside.
  5. Loosen remaining 8 body-to-cradle bolts at ends. Remove one bolt at each end of each cradle side, leaving one bolt per corner. Place jack stands under front of body. Move hoist back to body pan with 4" x 4" x 6' timber between hoist and vehicle.
  6. Lift hoist and remove jack stands. Place dolly under engine/transaxle assembly with 4" x 4" blocks to maintain position on dolly. Lower vehicle, allowing engine/transaxle assembly to rest on dolly.
  7. Remove engine mount bolts and right front bracket. Remove remaining 4 cradle-to-body bolts. Lift vehicle off engine/transaxle assembly. Separate engine and transaxle.

All Other FWD - Automatic Transaxle

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system and disconnect radiator hoses. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector. Disconnect vacuum and heater hoses. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached and place aside.
  2. Remove front reaction rod/strut. Disconnect throttle and transaxle linkage. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts, except 2 upper bolts. Remove front mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove forward exhaust pipe. Remove converter housing cover. Remove converter-to-drive plate bolts. Remove starter motor.
  3. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and position aside (if equipped). Remove 2 rear transaxle support bracket bolts. Disconnect fuel line at fuel filter.
  4. Position jack with wood block under transaxle and raise engine and transaxle until front engine mount studs clear cradle. Support engine weight with lift equipment. Remove 2 upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine.

All Other FWD - Manual Transaxle

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Remove air cleaner. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front engine mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove forward exhaust pipe. Remove starter motor with wires attached and position to side.
  2. Remove flywheel inspection cover and lower bellhousing bolts. Lower vehicle. Remove forward torque rod/strut from engine. Remove A/C compressor and position aside with refrigerant lines connected (if equipped). Remove heater blower motor.
  3. Disconnect emission hoses at canister. Disconnect power steering hoses (if equipped). Remove all vacuum hoses. Drain coolant. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses. Disconnect wiring at solenoid. Disconnect engine harness at firewall.
  4. Disconnect throttle cable. Disconnect fuel line. Attach lifting device and remove engine.

2.8L (173") V6

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Remove engine strut bracket from radiator support and position to rear. Remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and lay aside (if equipped).
  2. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable and TV cable (if equipped). Disconnect engine harness from ECM and pull connector through front of dash. Disconnect engine harness from junction block at left side of dash panel.
  3. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from engine. Remove power steering pump and bracket from engine (if equipped). Disconnect fuel lines at rubber hose connections at left side of engine compartment.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine front mount-to-cradle retaining nuts at right side of vehicle. Disconnect battery cables from engine. Remove starter.
  5. Remove transaxle inspection cover. On automatic transaxle equipped vehicles, disconnect torque converter from drive plate. Remove crankshaft pulley and all belts. Disconnect exhaust pipe.
  6. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolt from rear of engine. Disconnect power steering cut-off switch (if equipped).
  7. Lower vehicle. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Make note of ground stud location.
  8. Place support under transaxle rear extension. Attach engine lift and remove engine.

Century

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Disconnect vacuum lines. Disconnect TV cable and accelerator linkage at carburetor.
  2. Remove alternator. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector. Disconnect ground strap from engine at engine forward strut. Disconnect radiator hoses from radiator. Remove heater hoses from engine.
  3. Remove fan blower motor. Remove fuel line. Remove gas piston at hood and support hood in full open position. Remove AIR pump and mounting bracket. Raise and support vehicle. Remove power steering lines at steering gear. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove front engine mount-to-cradle nuts.
  4. Disconnect battery cables at starter and transaxle housing. Remove converter inspection cover. After marking converter/drive plate position, remove converter-to-drive plate bolts. Remove transaxle-to-engine block support bracket bolts. Lower vehicle. Position support under transaxle rear extension.
  5. Remove engine strut bracket from radiator support and swing rearward. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts, noting location of ground stud.
  6. Remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines connected (if equipped). Attach engine lift and remove engine.

Electra

  1. Raise hood and cover fenders. Remove negative battery cable. Remove airflow sensor wiring. Disconnect air intake duct. Drain cooling system. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Disconnect exhaust pipe. Disconnect engine mount bolts. Remove driveline vibration absorber. Remove starter wiring and starter. Disconnect A/C compressor and set aside (if equipped).
  3. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. One bolt is located between transaxle case and engine block and is installed in opposite direction. Remove drive plate cover. Use a scribe to mark drive plate-to-torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly. Remove drive plate-to-torque converter bolts.
  4. Disconnect engine support bracket at transaxle. Lower vehicle. Remove radiator hoses. Disconnect heater hoses at engine. Remove alternator. Disconnect engine wiring harness. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine.

LeSabre, Regal, & Riviera

  1. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Remove negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Remove cooling fan, pulleys and belts.
  2. Disconnect A/C compressor and set aside (if equipped). Remove radiator and heater hoses from engine. Remove fan shroud assembly. On Riviera, remove cooler lines from radiator and then remove radiator.
  3. Disconnect power steering pump and set aside. Disconnect fuel line and vacuum hoses. Disconnect battery ground cable from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable at carburetor.
  4. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector, alternator and engine-to-ground straps. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect crossover pipe from exhaust manifolds.
  5. Use a scribe to mark relationship of torque converter to drive plate to assure proper reassembly. Remove transmission converter cover and torque converter bolts. Disconnect wiring at starter motor.
  6. Remove right output shaft support bolts. Install final drive support chain. Disconnect final drive-to-engine support bracket.
  7. Remove transmission-to-cylinder block attaching bolts. Remove front motor mount-to-frame bracket attaching bolts. Lower vehicle and support transmission. Install engine lift. Remove engine.

Skylark & Somerset

  1. Raise hood and cover fenders. Scribe marks around hood hinges and remove hood. Remove negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
  2. Remove drive plate cover. Use a scribe to mark drive plate-to-torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly. Remove drive plate-to-torque converter bolts.
  3. Disconnect A/C compressor and wiring connector and set aside. Drain cooling system and remove lower radiator hose. Remove right front motor mount bolts. Remove right inner fender splash shield.
  4. Remove transaxle-to-engine mount bolt located between transaxle and cylinder block. Remove rear motor mount nuts. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove all heater hoses.
  5. Lower vehicle. Remove serpentine drive belt, alternator and power steering pump. Remove mass airflow sensor and intake duct. Disconnect electrical connector and remove cooling fan.
  6. Remove upper radiator hose and radiator. Position engine lift. Remove left upper transaxle mount. Remove master cylinder. Remove fuel lines and fuel rail. Remove TV and cruise control cable at throttle body. Remove all remaining engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts. Remove engine.

5.0L (307") V8

  1. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner and hot air pipe. Drain cooling system. Remove engine ground strap. Disconnect upper radiator support.
  2. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses at engine. Disconnect transmission cooler lines from radiator. Remove heater hoses at water pump and water control valve. Remove fan and fan shroud. Remove radiator.
  3. Remove power steering pump bracket. Do not disconnect oil lines. Position pump aside. Remove A/C compressor bracket without disconnecting lines. Position compressor and brackets aside.
  4. Remove fuel feed and return line at fuel pump. Remove accelerator cable. Disconnect wiring and vacuum hoses from engine. Remove left exhaust pipe from manifold. From left side, remove bolt and bracket holding final drive-to-engine.
  5. Raise and support vehicle. Remove flywheel shield and converter-to-drive plate bolts after marking converter/drive plate position. Disconnect right exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove splash shield and deflector.
  6. Remove 2 right output shaft support bracket bolts, after marking washers for reinstallation of bracket. Remove front motor mount bolts. Remove lower right transmission-to-engine bolts. Install final drive support chain. Lower vehicle and attach lifting chain to engine.
  7. Remove 5 remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. It may be necessary to raise or lower transmission using a floor jack with a wood block between jack and transmission. Attach engine lift and remove engine.

RWD Models

  1. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and hot air pipe. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine ground strap from right cylinder head to cowl.
  2. Remove radiator hoses. Remove automatic transmission cooler lines from radiator. Remove all heater hoses and vacuum hoses connected to engine.
  3. Disconnect power steering pump with hoses attached. Remove power steering hose bracket from engine. Remove A/C compressor and position aside with hoses and brackets attached (if equipped).
  4. Disconnect fuel hose from fuel line. Disconnect all wiring from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable. Remove radiator. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust and crossover pipes at manifolds.
  5. Remove torque converter cover and bolts attaching converter to drive plate. Remove engine mount bolts or nuts. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on right side. Remove starter and secure to frame with wires attached.
  6. Lower vehicle. Install engine lift. Place a wood block on top of a jack and slightly raise transmission. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on left side. Remove engine. If vehicle is to be moved, install converter holding tool and transmission support chain.

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS (V8)
