Diagnostic Starting Point - Seats

Begin the system diagnosis by reviewing the system Description and Operation. Reviewing the Description and Operation information will help you determine the correct symptom diagnostic procedure when a malfunction exists. Reviewing the Description and Operation information will also help you determine if the condition described by the customer is normal operation. Refer to SYMPTOMS - SEATS in order to identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Symptoms - Seats

IMPORTANTReview the system description in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to one of the following descriptions: POWER SEATS SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION HEATED SEATS DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the Seat Systems. Refer to CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES in Wiring Systems.
  2. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
  3. Inspect the power seat for proper mechanical operation. (Scheme 30)

Intermittent

Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT AND POOR CONNECTIONS in Wiring Systems.

Symptom List

Refer to a symptom diagnostic procedure from the following list in order to diagnose the symptom

  1. «Power Seat Inoperative»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/seats/#seat-system)
  2. «Heated Seat Always On»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/seats/#seat-system)

Removal Procedure

IMPORTANTWith the leather seat option, the left, front seat is equipped with a side impact air bag. This must be disabled before any work is done on this seat.
  1. If the seat is equipped with an air bag, refer to «AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems__air-bag-safety-precautions) in SIR. Disable the SIR system. Refer to «ZONE 7»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems__zone-7) in SIR.
  2. Remove the head restraint. Refer to «HEAD RESTRAINT REPLACEMENT - FRONT SEAT»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/seats/#seat-system) .
  3. Remove the track covers from the front seat adjuster. Refer to «SEAT ADJUSTER TRACK COVER REPLACEMENT - FRONT»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/seats/#seat-system) .
  4. Position the front seat forward to between the mid-forward position and the full forward position. Raise the seat to the full-up position.
  5. Remove the bolts which secure the front seat adjuster to the floor pan.
  6. Remove the nut from the seat belt anchor plate.

Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  4. Install the bolt which secure the front seat adjuster to the floor pan. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 42 N.m (31 lb ft).
  5. Reposition the front seat to the full back position.
  6. Install the track adjuster covers. Refer to «SEAT ADJUSTER TRACK COVER REPLACEMENT - FRONT»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/seats/#seat-system) .
  7. Install the nut to the seat belt anchor plate. Tighten Tighten the nut to 42 N.m (31 lb ft).
  8. Install the head restraint. Refer to «HEAD RESTRAINT REPLACEMENT - FRONT SEAT»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/seats/#seat-system) .
  9. Enable the SIR system if the seat is equipped with an air bag. Refer to «ZONE 7»(/buick/century/vi-1997-2005/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems) in SIR.

Scheme 36

Scheme 36
  1. If one side of the seat adjuster is not working, perform the following procedure: 1.1. The horizontal drive motor (1) and drive cables (4) are located at the front of the seat. Check to see if both cables are straight. If a cable is bent an end will be pulled out of the drive motor or drive screw. Straighten the cable. The seat switch may have to he toggled back and forth to get the cable ends to properly seat. 1.2. Run the seat forward until the seat removal bolts are accessible. 1.3. Once the seat is removed the cables must be examined to assure that no damage has occurred. 1.4. Also, the two sides of the seat adjuster will now be out of sync and must be readjusted or the adjuster may be noisy and the motor may overheat and fail. Use the following steps for adjustment. Tip the seat rearward. Reconnect the adjuster to the power switch. Run the seat adjuster rearward until the drive bracket (3) and the anchor bracket (2) are together on one side of the adjuster. Disconnect the drive cable on that side and run the opposite side rearward until its brackets touch. Re-attach the cables (4) to the motor and make sure they are straight between the motor (1) and the drive brackets (3).
  2. If the power seat motor is not operable, and the bolts that secure the adjuster to the floor pan are not accessible, perform the following procedure: From the front of the seat, disconnect both drive cables at the horizontal drive motor (2), which is located at the front of the seat adjuster. Attach a drill motor to a drive cable (1). Alternately run both sides of the adjuster forward until the seat removal bolts are accessible.

The power seat system consists of the following components

  1. Driver seat adjuster motor assembly
  2. Driver seat adjuster switch
  3. Passenger seat adjuster motor assembly
  4. Passenger seat adjuster switch
  5. POWER SEATS 30A circuit breaker

Power Seat Operation

The seat adjuster motors are controlled by the seat adjuster switch. Battery positive voltage and ground is supplied to the seat adjuster motors through the seat adjuster switch. All of the seat adjuster switches are closed to ground when in an inactive state. When a seat adjuster switch is pressed one of the adjuster motor supply circuits is supplied battery positive voltage, and ground is provided through the supply circuit to the inactive switch. The adjuster motors are reversible and the direction of the adjuster motor rotation is determined by which of the supply circuits is closed to battery positive voltage and which remains grounded.

The heated seat system consists of the following components

  1. Driver heated seat control module
  2. Driver heated seat switch
  3. Driver seat back heater element
  4. Driver seat cushion heater element
  5. Passenger heated seat control module
  6. Passenger heated seat switch
  7. Passenger seat back heater element
  8. Passenger seat cushion heater element
  9. LH HEATED SEAT 15A fuse
  10. HVAC 10A fuse
  11. RH HEATED SEAT 15A fuse

The heated seat control module controls the battery positive voltage used to supply the seat heater elements. Ignition voltage is supplied to the heated seat switch. When the heated seat switch is in the high or low position ignition voltage is supplied through the on switch signal circuit to the heated seat control module. Voltage to the high/low switch signal circuit is reduced by the resistors within the heated seat switch, high or low seat heater operation is determined by the voltage level to the heated seat control module. The heated seat control module uses the resistance through the heated seat thermistor to regulate the seat temperature. When the heated seat reaches the maximum temperature for high or low operating modes the battery positive voltage supply to the seat heater elements is removed. When the seat cools the resistance value through the heated seat thermistor returns to the limits set for high or low heated seat operation and the heated seat control module provides the battery positive voltage supply to the heated seat element supply circuit.
