63 10... Test requirements for headlight vertical aim adjustment

1. Car parked on level ground.
2. Replace faulty glass and mirrors and defective light bulbs.
3. Check tire pressure and correct if necessary.
4. Apply load equivalent to one person on driver's seat (approx. 75 kg).
5. Vehicle with full fuel tank or appropriate additional weight in luggage compartment.
6. Correct adjustment of headlights in relation to engine hood (gap dimensions).
7. Manual headlight vertical aim control: Turn handwheel to 0 position.
8. Automatic headlight vertical aim control: Wait approx. 30 seconds after switching on lights.
9. Version with xenon headlights: Wait 80 seconds after switching on lights. During this time, do not move the vehicle and avoid vibrations.
10. Align headlight aimer with vehicle longitudinal axis and parallel to parking surface. Set marking line (M) on aimer to distance (e). Scale graduations on aimer are equal to a gradient in cm at a distance of 10 meters.

Light/Dark Limit Of Headlights In Headlight Aimer

e Adjustment dimension, headlights

1. as per type plate on headlight housing in % (e.g.: 1.0 % = 10 cm / 10 m = 10 on headlight aimer).

Adjustment dimension, fog lights

1. all vehicles 2.0 % = 20 cm / 10 m = 20 on headlight aimer.

H Height of center of headlight above parking surface.

h H - e = height of marking line above parking surface

+ Central mark = center point of high-beam headlight.

M Marking line of headlamp aimer

S Parking surface of vehicle and headlight aimer

Adjustment dimension (e) is only valid for EUR. Observe differing national regulations.

63 10 004 Adjusting headlights

Observe Test Requirements For Headlight Vertical Aim Adjustment .

Note. Engine hood is open.

Adjust headlights at adjusting screws (1) and (2).

A definite allocation of adjusting screws is not possible.

2. Adjustment screw primarily for lateral adjustment

63 10 014 Adjusting fog lamps

Observe Test Requirements For Headlight Vertical Aim Adjustment .

Adjust fog lamp (1) at adjusting screw (2).

63 12 001 Removing and installing/replacing left headlight

Necessary preliminary tasks

1. Remove front bumper trim. See «51 11... OVERVIEW OF FRONT BUMPER»(/bmw/z4/e85e86-2002-2005/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-equipment-repair) .

Release screws (1).

Pull out headlight (2) in direction of arrow slightly, unlock and disconnect all plug connections.

Remove headlight (2).

Installation

Adjust headlight to fit. See 63 10 004 Adjusting Headlights .

63 12 010 Removing and installing/replacing left headlight (xenon headlight)

The subsequent procedure is described in

"Removing Left Headlight ".

Replacement

1. Remove control unit for xenon headlight. See «63 12 860 Replacing Control Unit For Left Xenon Headlight»(/bmw/z4/e85e86-2002-2005/remont/exterior-lights/#lights-repair__63-12-860-replacing-control-unit) .
2. Remove ignition unit for xenon headlight. See «63 12 870 Replacing Ignition Unit For Left Xenon Headlight»(/bmw/z4/e85e86-2002-2005/remont/exterior-lights/#lights-repair__63-12-870-replacing-ignition-unit) .
3. Remove «Bulb»(/bmw/z4/e85e86-2002-2005/remont/exterior-lights/#lights-repair__63-99-076-replacing-lamp-for) for xenon light.
4. If necessary, remove «Bulbs»(/bmw/z4/e85e86-2002-2005/remont/exterior-lights/#lights-repair__63-99-273-replacing-bulb-for) .

63 12 860 Replacing control unit for left xenon headlight

Necessary preliminary tasks

1. Remove left «Headlight»(/bmw/z4/e85e86-2002-2005/remont/exterior-lights/#lights-repair__63-12-010-removing-and-installingreplacing) (xenon headlight).

Release screws (1).

Remove control unit for xenon headlight (2) upwards from headlight (3).

Installation

When installing control unit for xenon headlight (1), make sure sealing sleeve (2) is correctly seated.

63 12 870 Replacing ignition unit for left xenon headlight

Note. Front wheel removed for purposes of clarity.

Unlock fasteners (1) by turning counterclockwise through 180° and fold up cover (2) in direction of arrow.

Scheme 8

Lift locking bracket (1) out of mounts (2) and fold down as illustrated.

Feed out cover (3) in direction of arrow and remove.

Scheme 9

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Turn ignition unit for xenon headlight (2) approx. 30° in counterclockwise direction, detach from headlight (3) and remove.

Installation

Make sure inner ring is correctly positioned in ignition unit for xenon headlight.

63 13 200 Removing and installing/replacing front left or right auxiliary turn signal lamp

Turn front auxiliary turn signal lamp (1) approx. 45° counterclockwise and pull out of trim (2).

Unlock plug connection behind and disconnect.

Remove front auxiliary turn signal lamp (2).

Replacement

If necessary, remove Bulb .

63 14 015 Removing and installing/replacing rear left or right side marker lamps

Loosen screws (1).

Unlock retaining hook (2) and remove side marker lamp (3) towards rear.

63 17 060 Removing and installing (replacing) left or right front fog lamp

Note. Front wheel removed for purposes of clarity.

Unlock fasteners (1) by turning counterclockwise through 180° and fold up cover (2) in direction of arrow.

Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Release screw (2) and remove front fog lamp (3).

Replacement

If necessary, remove Bulb .

Installation

Adjust Front Fog Lamps .

63 21 055 Replacing a socket housing for left or right tail light

Turn turn-lock fastener (1) in direction of arrow and remove trim (2).

Scheme 16

Turn socket housing for rear light to be replaced counterclockwise and remove.

Convert Bulb , replace if necessary.

Note. EUR driver's side only: Socket housing for fog warning lamp All others: Socket housing for reversing light Socket housing for combined brake/rear light Socket housing for turn signal light Socket housing for combined brake/rear light

63 21 101 Replacing sealing frame for left or right rear light

Necessary preliminary tasks

1. Remove «Rear Light»(/bmw/z4/e85e86-2002-2005/remont/exterior-lights/#lights-repair__63-21-170-removing-and-installingreplacing)

Detach sealing frame for rear light (1) from rear light (2).

Installation

Sealing frame for rear light (1) is centered via openings for threaded pins (3).

Make sure sealing frame for rear light (1) is correctly bonded all round on rear light (2).

63 21 170 Removing and installing/replacing left or right rear light

Turn turn-lock fastener (1) in direction of arrow and remove trim (2).

Scheme 19

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Note. Secure rear light (3) against falling out.

Release nuts (2) and remove exterior rear light (3).

Scheme 20

Installation

1. Make sure sealing frame for rear light (2) is correctly seated, replace if necessary.
2. Make sure guides (1) of rear light (3) are correctly seated in associated mountings.
3. Make sure (outer) gap of rear light (3) is uniform all round.

Replacement

Remove trim on rear light.

If necessary, remove all socket housings for rear light.

63 25 000 Removing and installing/replacing additional stop light

Open trunk lid.

Loosen screws (1).

Feed out cover (2) in direction of arrow, unlock plug connection of auxiliary brake light behind it and disconnect.

Pay attention to springs underneath when releasing nuts (3).

Installation

Tightening sequence of screws

1. Middle
2. Outer

Tightening torque is 2-3 N.m.

Pull auxiliary brake light (1) in direction of arrow out of rear lid (2) and remove.

Installation

Make sure auxiliary brake light seal is correctly seated. If necessary, replace auxiliary brake light seal.

63 26 000 Removing and installing/replacing left or right license plate light

Special tools required

1. 64 1 020

Lever out license plate light (1) with special tool 64 1 020 as illustrated.

Disconnect associated plug connection and remove license plate light (1).

If necessary, remove bulb.

63 31 000 Removing and installing/replacing complete ceiling light

Note. Secure complete ceiling light against falling out.

Unclip complete ceiling light (1) in direction of arrow from cowl panel insert (2).

Disconnect associated plug connections and remove complete ceiling light (1).

63 31 020 Removing and installing/replacing footwell light

Driver's side

Unclip footwell light (1) in direction of arrow from panel for pedals (2), disconnect associated plug connection and remove footwell light (1).

Passenger side

Unclip footwell light (1) in direction of arrow from bottom right instrument panel trim (2), disconnect associated plug connection and remove footwell light (1).

Replacement

If necessary, remove bulb.

63 31 070 Removing and installing/replacing storage box light

Special tools required

1. 00 9 322

Note. Open lid on storage box.

Lever out storage box light (2) in direction of arrow through opening (1) with special tool 00 9 322.

Disconnect associated plug connection and remove storage box light (2).

Lever out luggage compartment light (1) in direction of arrow.

Disconnect associated plug connection and remove luggage compartment light (1).

Do not touch the glass bulbs in new lights bulbs as even the slightest contamination will burn in and reduce bulb service life.

Only touch light bulbs with clean gloves or a clean cloth.

Do not expose light bulbs to mechanical vibrations.

Use only recommended light bulbs.

Follow the light bulb manufacturer's instructions without fail.

63 99... Instructions for replacing light bulbs (interior lights)

Do not touch the glass bulbs in new lights bulbs as even the slightest contamination will burn in and reduce bulb service life.

Only touch light bulbs with clean gloves or a clean cloth.

Do not expose light bulbs to mechanical vibrations.

Use only recommended light bulbs.

Follow the light bulb manufacturer's instructions without fail.

63 99 002 Replacing halogen bulb for high-beam headlight on left

Note. Front wheel removed for purposes of clarity.

Unlock fasteners (1) by turning counterclockwise through 180° and fold up cover (2) in direction of arrow.

Scheme 32

Lift locking bracket (1) out of mounts (2) and fold down as illustrated.

Feed out cover (3) in direction of arrow and remove.

Scheme 33

Turn bulb holder (1) in direction of arrow and pull back towards rear.

Remove bulb from bulb holder (1).

Unlock fasteners (1) by turning counterclockwise through 180° and fold up cover (2) in direction of arrow.

Lift locking bracket (1) out of mounts (2) and fold down as illustrated.

Feed out cover (3) in direction of arrow and remove.

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Turn ignition unit for xenon headlight (2) approx. 30° in counterclockwise direction, detach from headlight (3) and remove.

Installation

Make sure inner ring is correctly positioned in ignition unit for xenon headlight (2).

Unlock retainer (1) as illustrated on both sides.

Remove lamp for xenon headlight (2) from headlight (3).

Installation

Note. Press bulb holder (3) forwards if retaining ring (1) is tightly seated.
