18 00 020 Removing and Installing Complete Exhaust System (N62TU)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform this work after engine has cooled down.

Danger of injury!

Removal of the exhaust system must be carried out with the assistance of a second person.

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220.

Note. Procedure is for the left side. Right side is identical.

Unfasten screw connection.

Slacken ball band clamp (1) from exhaust pipe.

  1. Replace ball band clamps.
  2. Apply a thin coating of copper past to contact surface between ball and socket.
  3. When tightening down ball band clamps, press exhaust system against both manifold flanges in order to achieve gap-free installation.
  4. Install ball band clamp at right angles to exhaust pipe.
  5. Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ, see «EXHAUST SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-tightening-torques-n52-n62) .

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 1A, see EXHAUST SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Installation

Align both tail pipes (1) of rear muffler in each case centrally to openings in rear apron.

Check rubber mount for damage, replace if necessary.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 10 031 Replacing Rear Muffler (N62TU)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220 .

Note. If the cutting lines are not identified by notches in the pipes, they must be determined by means of the pipe lengths on the new rear muffler (2).

Carry over cutting lines to faulty rear muffler (2) and mark out.

Cut both exhaust pipes at marked points with special tool 00 2 210 and deburr.

Note. Secure exhaust system against falling off. Release screws and remove holder (1). (Scheme 33) Tightening torque 18 20 2A, see EXHAUST SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES.

Installation

Connect front muffler to rear muffler by means of clamps and align.

Centre clamps and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 5A, see EXHAUST SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES . .

Align both tail pipes (1) of rear muffler are centrally situated in openings in rear apron.

Note. Check rubber mount for damage and replace if necessary. Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 10 040 Replacing Front Muffler (N62TU)

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220 .

Note. If the cutting lines are not identified by notches in the pipes, they must be determined by means of the pipe lengths on the new rear muffler (2). Carry over cutting lines to faulty rear muffler (2) and mark out.

Cut both exhaust pipes at marked points with special tool 00 2 210 and deburr.

Installation

Connect front muffler to rear muffler by means of clamps and align.

18 40 050 Removing and Installing/Replacing Right Exhaust Manifold (N62TU)

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove «exhaust system»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-repair-n62__18-00-020-removing-and-installing) .
  2. Remove right control sensor. See «EMISSION CONTROL, OXYGEN»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-repair-n62) .
  3. Remove right monitor sensor. See «EMISSION CONTROL, OXYGEN»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-repair-n62) .
  4. Remove right engine support arm.

For purposes of clarity, illustration shows and description refers to the removed engine.

Unscrew nuts.

Remove exhaust manifold downward.

Installation

Replace seals. Seal beads face exhaust manifold. Coat threads with copper paste.

Replace nuts.

Tightening torque, 18 40 1A, see EXHAUST SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
