18 00 020 Removing and Installing Complete Exhaust System (N52K)

Special tools required

1. 31 2 220 «31 2 220 SUPPORT PLATE»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/axle-shafts/#front-axle-special-tools__31-2-220-support-plate)

Danger of injury!

Removal of the exhaust system must be carried out with the assistance of a second person.

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 22 31 2 220 SUPPORT PLATE .

Unfasten screw connection.

Slacken ball band clamp (1) from exhaust pipe.

Installation

Scheme 2

1. Replace ball band clamps.
2. Apply a thin coating of copper past to contact surface between ball and socket.
3. When tightening down ball band clamps, press exhaust system against both manifold flanges in order to achieve gap-free installation.
4. Install ball band clamp at right angles to exhaust pipe.
5. Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ, see «18 31 EXHAUST SYSTEM»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-tightening-torques-n52-n62__18-31-exhaust-system) .

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 1AZ, see 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 1AZ, see 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Scheme 4

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 2AZ, see 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Lower and remove exhaust system with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Align both tail pipes (1) of rear muffler in each case centrally to openings in rear apron.

Scheme 7

Installation

Check rubber mount for damage, replace if necessary.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 32 081 Replacing Exhaust Pipe with Catalytic Converter, Cyl. 1-3 (N52K)

Special tools required

1. 00 2 210 «00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#maintenance-and-general-information-special-tools__00-2-210-exhaust-pipe-cutter)

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new exhaust pipe with catalytic converter (2). Carry over cutting line to faulty exhaust pipe with catalytic converter (2) and mark out.

Cut exhaust pipe at marked point with special tool 00 2 210 00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER and deburr.

Release bolt and remove bracket (1). Tightening torque 18 20 1AZ. 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION

Support exhaust system.

Release nuts and remove exhaust pipe.

Installation

1. Replace self-locking nuts.
2. Replace seals.
3. Tightening torque 18 31 2AZ, see «18 31 EXHAUST SYSTEM»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-tightening-torques-n52-n62__18-31-exhaust-system)

Installation

Connect exhaust pipe to center muffler by means of clamp and align.

Centre clamp and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 5AZ, see 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION

Installation

Check rubber mount for damage, replace if necessary.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 32 082 Replacing Exhaust Pipe with Catalytic Converter, Cyl. 4-6 (N52K)

Special tools required

1. 00 2 210 «00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#maintenance-and-general-information-special-tools__00-2-210-exhaust-pipe-cutter)

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new exhaust pipe with catalytic converter (1). Carry over cutting line to faulty exhaust pipe with catalytic converter (1) and mark out.

Cut exhaust pipe at marked point with special tool 00 2 210 00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER and deburr.

Release nuts and remove exhaust pipe.

Installation

1. Replace self-locking nuts.
2. Replace seals.

Installation

Connect exhaust pipe to center muffler by means of clamp and align.

Centre clamp and tighten down.

Installation

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 10 031 Replacing Rear Muffler (N52K)

Special tools required

1. 00 2 210 «00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#maintenance-and-general-information-special-tools__00-2-210-exhaust-pipe-cutter)
2. 31 2 220 «31 2 220 SUPPORT PLATE»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/axle-shafts/#front-axle-special-tools__31-2-220-support-plate)

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220 31 2 220 SUPPORT PLATE .

Note. If the cutting lines are not identified by notches in the pipes, they must be determined by means of the pipe lengths on the new rear muffler (2). Carry over cutting lines to faulty rear muffler (2) and mark out.

Scheme 8

Cut both exhaust pipes at marked points with special tool 00 2 210 00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER and deburr.

Scheme 9

Secure exhaust system against falling off.

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 2AZ 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Lower and remove exhaust system with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Connect front muffler to rear muffler by means of clamps and align.

Centre clamps and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 5AZ 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Installation

Align both tail pipes (1) of rear muffler in each case centrally to openings in rear apron.

Note. Check rubber mount for damage and replace if necessary. Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 12 050 Replacing Centre Muffler (N52K)

Special tools required

1. 00 2 210 «00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#maintenance-and-general-information-special-tools__00-2-210-exhaust-pipe-cutter)

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new center muffler (3). Carry over cutting line to faulty center muffler (3) and mark out.

Secure center muffler against falling off.

Cut exhaust pipes at marked points with special tool 00 2 210 00 2 210 EXHAUST PIPE CUTTER and deburr.

Remove center muffler.

Installation

Adjust center muffler to fit and connect with clamps.

Centre clamp and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 5AZ, see 18 20 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Installation

Adjust center muffler to fit so that both tail pipes (1) of rear muffler are centrally situated in openings in rear apron.

Note. Check exhaust system for leaks.

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new exhaust pipe with catalytic converter (2). Carry over cutting line to faulty exhaust pipe with catalytic converter (2) and mark out.

Scheme 11

Cut exhaust pipe at marked point with special tool 00 2 210 and deburr.

Scheme 12

Release bolt and remove bracket (1). Tightening torque, see 18 20 1AZ in 20 EXHAUST SYSTEMS SUSPENSION .

Scheme 13

Support exhaust system. Release nuts and remove exhaust pipe.

1. Replace self-locking nuts.
2. Replace seals.
3. Tightening torque, see 18 31 2AZ in «31 EXHAUST PIPE WITH MOUNTING»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-tightening-torques-n52-n62) .

Scheme 14

Installation: Connect exhaust pipe to center muffler by means of clamp and align. Centre and tighten down clamp. Tightening torque, see 18 20 5AZ in 20 EXHAUST SYSTEMS SUSPENSION .

Release nuts and remove exhaust pipe

1. Replace self-locking nuts.
2. Replace seals.
3. Tightening torque 18 31 2AZ, see 18 31 2AZ in «31 EXHAUST PIPE WITH MOUNTING»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-tightening-torques-n52-n62) .

Replace Self-Locking Nuts & Seals. Scheme 18

Installation: Connect exhaust pipe to centre muffler by means of clamp and align. Centre clamp and tighten down. Tightening torque, see 18 20 5AZ in 20 EXHAUST SYSTEMS SUSPENSION .

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 40 050 Removing and Installing/Replacing Front Exhaust Manifold (N52K)

Necessary preliminary tasks

1. Remove rear exhaust manifold. «18 40 060 Removing and Installing/Replacing Rear Exhaust Manifold (N52K)»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-repair-n52__18-40-060-removing-and-installingreplacing)

Note. The oxygen sensors are in danger of being damaged when the exhaust manifolds are removed and installed.

Remove control sensor, see 78 EMISSION CONTROL, OXYGEN from cylinders 1 to 3

Remove monitor sensor from cylinders 1 to 3

Unscrew nuts.

Remove exhaust manifold (1).

Installation

Clean sealing faces and replace seals.

Replace nuts.

Tightening torque, 18 40 1AZ, see 18 40 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .

Necessary preliminary tasks

4. Remove complete exhaust system. See «18 00 020 Removing and Installing Complete Exhaust System (N52K)»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-repair-n52__18-00-020-removing-and-installing)

Note. The oxygen sensors are in danger of being damaged when the exhaust manifolds are removed and installed.

Remove control sensor 78 EMISSION CONTROL, OXYGEN from cylinders 4 to 6

Remove monitor sensor from cylinders 4 to 6

Unscrew nuts.

Remove exhaust manifold (1).

Installation

Clean sealing faces and replace seals.

Replace nuts.

Tightening torque 18 40 1AZ, see 18 40 EXHAUST SYSTEM SUSPENSION .
