How to Overhaul & Installation the Engine Controls - Removal BMW X5 E53

Removal & Installation 215 illustrations ~7955 words

INTRODUCTION

Removal, overhaul and installation procedures are covered in this article. If component removal and installation is primarily an unbolt and bolt-on procedure, only a torque specification may be furnished.

Note. Removal and installation procedures are supplied for those models and/or engines with available information.

COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) FOR DIGITAL MOTOR ELECTRONICS (DME) SYSTEM

Note. Disconnect battery before removing Digital Motor Electronics (DME) module (PCM). Disconnecting battery will clear PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Retrieve DTCs before disconnecting battery. PCM stores certain basic driveability values. PCM also receives different input values, depending on engine condition, which are compared with stored values. PCM adaptive system compares input values with stored values. PCM replacement could cause poor engine performance before all values are adapted to engine condition. Before exchanging PCM, ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Remove old PCM, install new PCM and operate vehicle at different RPMs.

Removal & Installation (3-Series - Z3)

PCM is located in box in right rear of engine compartment. Remove PCM box cover. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove PCM. (Scheme 1) To install, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: Removal & Installation (3-Series - Z3)
CAUTIONBMW 3-series vehicles utilize either a Bosch or Siemens PCM. PCMs cannot be interchanged.

Removal & Installation (3-Series - E46)

PCM is located in box in left rear corner of engine compartment. (Scheme 2) Remove 4 cover screws. Disconnect PCM connector. Remove PCM. (Scheme 3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure wiring harness and cover are correctly installed to prevent water entry.

Threads of new oxygen sensors are already coated with anti-sieze compound. If an oxygen sensor is reused, apply a thin coat of anti-sieze compound. Do not clean oxygen sensor section which protrudes into the exhaust line and ensure that it avoids all contact with lubricants. Note cable routing of oxygen sensor. Interrogate fault memory of control unit on Digital Engine Electronics (DME), check fault messages in memory, rectify faults and cancel fault memory. Information is not available from manufacturer.

Ensure pulse tooth is exactly centered in hole. (Scheme 26) Measure depth to pulse teeth of flywheel, then measure depth of pulse sensor. (Scheme 27)and (Scheme 28). Subtract depth of pulse sensor from depth of flywheel to achieve gap measurement. Using shims, adjust gap to.021" (.55 mm).

DIRECT IGNITION SYSTEM (DIS)

  1. Ensure ignition is turned off before working on the ignition system. The engine will not start without a connected secondary circuit. When checking compression, remove Digital Motor Electronics (DME) Electronic Control Unit (PCM) relay. See «DME & FUEL PUMP RELAY LOCATION»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/removal-installation/#how-to-overhaul-installation-the-engine-controls-removal) table under FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE under FUEL SYSTEM.
  2. Shielded capacitors may not be connected to terminal No. 1 of the ignition coil. Terminal No. 1 of the ignition coil may not be connected to ground or battery positive terminal, as this will damage ignition stages in DME control unit.
  3. DO NOT connect DVOM or test light to terminal No. 1 of ignition coil while engine is running. High tension (350 volts) is present at coil terminal No. 4, secondary ignition leads, spark plugs and ignition coil terminal No. 1 to DME Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Note. For location of DME master and fuel pump relays, see DME & FUEL PUMP RELAY LOCATION table under FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE under FUEL SYSTEMS .
