18 00 020 Removing and installing complete exhaust system (M62, M54)

Slacken screws (1) of rear muffler on intermediate muffler.
Installation
Tightening torque, see 18 00 6AZ in EXHAUST SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
Scheme 1
Clip cover (1) out of retainers (2).
Scheme 2
Carefully press cover (1) downwards.
Release screws (2) on rubber mount for rear muffler on left and right.
Scheme 3
Release screws (1) on rubber mount for rear muffler on rear axle carrier on left and right.
Note. Rubber mounts are colored differently.
Scheme 4
- Red (M62) or gray (M54): for rubber mount of rear muffler on rear axle carrier
- Black: for all other rubber mounts
Mixing up the rubber mounts will alter the vibration response of the exhaust system.
Release screws (1) of rear muffler on intermediate muffler and remove both rear mufflers.

Release screws (1) of rubber mounts for intermediate muffler.

Release plug connection (1) of monitor sensor on left and right.
Clip cable of monitor sensor on left and right out of brackets.
Release screws (3) of rubber mounts on left and right.

Release plug connection (1) of oxygen sensor on left and right.

Release screws (1) on rubber mounts.
Release screws (2) on holder of transmission.

Release screw connections of catalytic converters at exhaust manifolds on left and right and remove exhaust system completely.
Installation
Replace self-locking nuts.
Coat threads with CRC copper paste.

Release screw connections (1) of catalytic converters at exhaust manifolds on left and right and remove exhaust system completely.
Installation
Replace self-locking nuts.
Coat threads with CRC copper paste.

Release screws (1) of rear muffler on intermediate muffler.
Installation
Tightening torque, see 18 00 6AZ in EXHAUST SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
Detach both rear mufflers from intermediate muffler.

Note. For the following work steps, some illustrations of the exhaust system are from other BMW models.
Measure length (B) of pipe sections on new intermediate muffler.
Scheme 13
Transfer determined distance (B) to new installed intermediate muffler.
Scheme 14
Cut through and deburr both exhaust pipes at determined point between catalytic converter and intermediate muffler with special tool 00 2 210.
Scheme 15
Release screws (1) on rubber mounts and remove intermediate muffler.
Detach rubber mounts from old intermediate muffler and push onto bracket of new intermediate muffler.
Scheme 16
The apertures on the new intermediate muffler are sealed with adhesive film.
Completely remove adhesive film from new intermediate muffler.
Make sure there are no foreign bodies in intermediate muffler.
Scheme 17
Connect new intermediate muffler and catalytic converters using clamping sleeves.
Installation
Nuts point downwards.
Align clamping sleeves so that

- separation point is in middle of clamping sleeve, and
- there is sufficient spacing to adjoining components.

Clip cover (1) out of retainers (2).

Press cover (1) downwards.
Release screws (2) on rubber mount for rear muffler on left and right.

Detach rubber mount (1) from holder (2).

Release screws (1) on rubber mount for rear muffler on rear axle carrier on left and right.
Detach rubber mount from holder.
Replace rubber mounts on rear muffler.

Detach rubber mount from holder.
Replace rubber mounts on intermediate muffler.

Remove and install complete exhaust system, refer to 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M62, M54) .

Measure length (D) of pipe section on new catalytic converter.
Transfer determined length (D) to removed catalytic converter.
Scheme 40
Cut through and deburr exhaust pipe at determined point between catalytic converter and center muffler with special tool 00 2 210.
Scheme 41
The apertures on the new catalytic converter are sealed with adhesive film.
Completely remove adhesive film from new catalytic converter.
Make sure there are no foreign bodies in catalytic converter.
Scheme 42
Connect new catalytic converter and center muffler using clamping sleeves.
Installation
Nuts point downwards.
Align clamping sleeves so that

- separation point is in middle of clamping sleeve, and
- there is sufficient spacing to adjoining components.
Note. Do not clean oxygen and monitor sensors and do not bring into contact with lubricant. Protect oxygen and monitor sensors when applying underbody protection.
Unscrew oxygen and monitor sensor from old catalytic converter. If necessary, replace oxygen and monitor sensor.
Tightening torque, see 11 78 1AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
Coat thread with grease for oxygen sensor.
Screw oxygen and monitor sensor onto new catalytic converter.
