VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION
| CAUTION | Disconnecting vehicle battery will cancel fault codes of control units. On vehicles with radio codes, after disconnecting battery, radio codes must be re-entered. Obtain radio code card from customer. Note stored stations and restore then after connecting battery. Also, where applicable, initialize sunroof and set steering angle. |
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
| CAUTION | Use only the approved transmission fluid in this automatic transmission. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission. |

- Assemble Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 0 250). To do so, insert pivot pin into rear bore of Special Tool (24 5 301). (Scheme 198) Special Tool (24 5 301) is provided with an additional bore. (Scheme 199) This bore is essential to convert Special Tool (24 5 301) into a stable assembly position. Only in this way is it ensured that transmission unit rests safely on Special Tool (24 5 301) and does not tilt.
- Support transmission and transfer case with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 0 250). (Scheme 200)
- Unclip cable for oxygen sensors on transmission cross-member. Unclip cable from transmission. Unfasten screws and remove transmission crossmember. (Scheme 201)
- Unfasten screws. (Scheme 202)
- Brace propeller shaft on center mount and loosen nuts. (Scheme 203) DO NOT let propeller shaft fall into joints. Joints and rubber sleeve on constant-velocity joint can be damaged. (Scheme 204)
- Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing. Remove from transmission output flange and tie up to one side with a cord or wire.
- Unlock plug connection and remove. (Scheme 205) Unclip cable from transmission housing.
- Unlock and remove cable connector (1). (Scheme 206) Pull cable connector (2) off impulse sensor.
- Lift off cover. (Scheme 207)
- Release retaining screws on torque converter with Special Tool (24 1 110). (Scheme 208) Continue turning engine on central screw in enginewise direction.
- Support engine at front housing (1) with an assembly aid (2). (Scheme 209) Turn front wheels to right lock to ensure that center track rod is not subjected to excessive loads when transmission is lowered.
- Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do so, insert Special Tool (24 4 131 / 24 4 132) in recess in transmission case and tighten down. (Scheme 210)
- Unfasten screws. (Scheme 211) Pull out transmission with transfer case towards rear and lower.
- Release transfer case screw connection on transmission and remove transfer case.

| CAUTION | Oil cooler and lines must always be flushed before a replacement transmission is installed. |
- To install, reverse removal procedure. If replacing transmission, fit shift lever, bracket for cable and retainers for oxygen sensor cable from old transmission to new transmission.
- Install transfer case to transmission. Pay attention to dowel sleeves (1). (Scheme 212) Replace damaged dowel sleeves. Apply a thin coat of WEICON ANTISIZE grease or equivalent to splines.
- Note dowel sleeves. (Scheme 213) Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
- Bore (1) in drive plate must be accessible from aperture in oil sump. (Scheme 214)
- Screw Special Tool (24 2 300) into the threaded bore (1). (Scheme 215)
- Turn torque converter until Special Tool (24 2 300) is aligned with bore in drive plate. (Scheme 216) Flange automatic transmission to engine. Remove Special Tool (24 2 300) from lug of torque converter towards front.
- Tighten transmission-to-engine screws to specification. (Scheme 211) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- Tighten torque converter-to-flywheel screws to specification. (Scheme 208) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- If the pulse generators are fitted to a new transmission, they must be reset. Note whether one or more shims are installed between the transmission housing and the pulse sensor. If one or more shims are installed, the distance between the pulse sensor and the pulse teeth of the increment wheel must be measured: Turn the engine on the front central bolt so that a full pulse tooth (1) can be seen through the opening of the removed pulse sensor. Make sure that the pulse tooth (1) is exactly centered in the hole. (Scheme 217) The depth to the pulse teeth of the flywheel must be determined with Special Tool (00 2 407). (Scheme 218) Note depth. Measure depth (A) of pulse sensor. (Scheme 219) Deduct depth (A) of pulse sensor from depth of flywheel. This result is the gap dimension. Adjust a gap dimension of 0.53-0.57 mm with the shims. The dimension 0.55 mm should be achieved as exactly as possible in order to enable exact misfiring recognition and prevent pulse sensor from contacting pulse teeth.
- Center bearing must be aligned at right angles to propeller shaft. (Scheme 203) Tighten nuts of center mount-to-body to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- Replace self-locking nuts of flexible disk-to-propeller shaft and transmission output flange. (Scheme 202) Grip each screw and tighten down nut. This prevents flexible coupling from being subjected to torsion stress. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- Tighten crossmember screws to specification. (Scheme 201) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- Replace O-rings on oil lines. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- Install nut for selector lever cable to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- Brace clamping section (1) and loosen nut (2). (Scheme 220) Press shift lever (3) forwards (park setting). Press cable (4) in direction of arrow, then release again. Brace clamping section (1) and tighten nut (2) to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- To install reinforcement plate, torque screws (2) to specification. (Scheme 221) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-440z__torque-specifications).
- After completion of work, check transmission fluid level and top up if necessary.
