VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION
| CAUTION | Disconnecting vehicle battery will cancel fault codes of control units. On vehicles with radio codes, after disconnecting battery, radio codes must be re-entered. Obtain radio code card from customer. Note stored stations and restore then after connecting battery. Also, where applicable, initialize sunroof and set steering angle. |
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
| CAUTION | Use only the approved transmission fluid in this automatic transmission. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission. Catch and dispose properly escaping transmission fluid. |

Note. Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.
- Disconnect battery negative lead. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY.
- Remove exhaust system. See REPLACING INTERMEDIATE MUFFLER (M62, M54).
- Remove heat shield on right. Unclip cable for oxygen sensors.
- Remove reinforcement plate. Remove engine underguard at front.
- Release stabilizer and slide forwards. See «STABILIZER»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/suspension-front/#suspension-front).
- Remove front propeller shaft. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT. Unclip vent line from transmission at bracket (engine).
- Release screws and remove exhaust bracket (1). (Scheme 222)
- Grip clamp bushing (1) and loosen selector lever nut (2). (Scheme 223)
- Grip cable (1) at hexagon (2). (Scheme 224) Unfasten nut (3). Pull cable (1) out of holder.
- Unlock attachment plug (1) and disconnect. (Scheme 225) Unclip cable (2) from transmission housing.
- Release screw (1). (Scheme 226) Withdraw hydraulic lines (2) for automatic transmission fluid cooler from transmission housing.
- Assemble Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305). Special Tool (24 5 301) must be provided with an additional bore hole. (Scheme 227) This bore is essential to convert Special Tool (24 5 301) into a stable assembly position. Only in this way is it ensured that transmission unit rests safely on Special Tool (24 5 305) and does not tilt. To do so, insert pivot pin into rear bore of Special Tool (24 5 301). (Scheme 228)
- Support transmission and transfer case with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305). (Scheme 229)
- Unclip cable for oxygen sensors on transmission cross-member. Unclip cable from transmission. Unfasten screws and remove transmission crossmember. (Scheme 230)
- Unfasten screws. (Scheme 231)
- Grip propeller shaft at center bearing and release nuts. (Scheme 232) DO NOT let propeller shaft fall into joints. Joints and rubber sleeve on constant-velocity joint can be damaged. (Scheme 233)
- Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing. Remove from transmission output flange and tie up to one side with a cord or wire.
- Release screw (1). (Scheme 234) Lever out protective cap (2).
- Release retaining screws on torque converter with Special Tool (24 1 110). (Scheme 235) Continue cranking engine at central bolt in direction of rotation. Unscrew Special Tool (24 2 300) from torque converter.
- Unfasten screws. (Scheme 236) Pull out transmission with transfer case towards rear and lower.
- Release transfer case screw connection on transmission and remove transfer case.

| CAUTION | Oil cooler and lines must always be flushed before a replacement transmission is installed. |
| CAUTION | When joining up engine and transmission, ensure ease of movement of torque converter. |
- To install, reverse removal procedure. If replacing transmission, fit shift lever, bracket for cable and retainers for oxygen sensor cable from old transmission to new transmission.
- Install transfer case to transmission. Pay attention to dowel sleeves (1). (Scheme 237) Replace damaged dowel sleeves. Apply a thin coat of WEICON ANTISIZE grease or equivalent to splines. Tighten transfer case screw connection on transmission to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Note dowel sleeves. (Scheme 238) Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
- Screw Special Tool (24 2 300) into tapped hole (1). (Scheme 239)
- Turn torque converter until Special Tool (24 2 300) is flush with bore in driving disk. (Scheme 240) Flange automatic transmission to engine.
- Bore (1) in driving disk must be accessible from aperture in oil sump. (Scheme 241)
- Tighten transmission-to-engine screws to specification. (Scheme 236) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Tighten torque converter-to-flywheel screws to specification. (Scheme 235) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Center bearing must be aligned at right angles to propeller shaft. (Scheme 232) Tighten nuts of center mount-to-body to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Replace self-locking nuts of flexible disk-to-propeller shaft and transmission output flange. (Scheme 231) Grip each screw and tighten down nut. This prevents flexible coupling from being subjected to torsion stress. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Tighten crossmember screws to specification. (Scheme 230) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Replace sealing rings on hydraulic lines.
- Install nut for selector lever cable to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Grip clamping sleeve (1). (Scheme 242) Slacken nut (2). Press shift lever (3) forwards into park position. Press cable (4) in direction of arrow and release again. Grip clamping sleeve (1) and tighten nut (2) to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- Install front propeller shaft. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT.
- To install reinforcement plate, torque screws (2) to specification. (Scheme 243) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x5/e53-1999-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-x5-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
- After completion of work, check transmission fluid level of transmission and transfer case. Top up if necessary.
