VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

CAUTIONDisconnecting vehicle battery will cancel fault codes of control units. On vehicles with radio codes, after disconnecting battery, radio codes must be re-entered. Obtain radio code card from customer. Note stored stations and restore then after connecting battery. Also, where applicable, initialize sunroof and set steering angle.
CAUTIONDo not move car by means of engine power once drive shaft has been removed.

Note. To avoid complaints of humming, before removing propeller shaft, mark cardan universal joint to drive flange of final drive. (Scheme 1) Reinstall joint in this position.

  1. Remove complete exhaust system. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M54). Remove heat shield.
  2. Release threaded ring (1) several turns with Special Tool (26 1 040). (Scheme 2)
  3. Unfasten screws. (Scheme 3)
  4. Unfasten screws. (Scheme 4)
  5. Push rear propeller shaft (1) forwards. (Scheme 5)
  6. Grip propeller shaft and release nuts. (Scheme 6) Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing (1). Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and remove downwards.
  7. Check centering. (Scheme 7) If necessary, replace damaged centering. Grease centering mount.
  8. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. Tighten threaded ring with Special Tool (26 1 040) to specification.
