| CAUTION | Disconnecting vehicle battery will cancel fault codes of control units. On vehicles with radio codes, after disconnecting battery, radio codes must be re-entered. Obtain radio code card from customer. Note stored stations and restore then after connecting battery. Also, where applicable, initialize sunroof and set steering angle. |
| CAUTION | Do not move car by means of engine power once drive shaft has been removed. |
Note. To avoid complaints of humming, before removing propeller shaft, mark cardan universal joint to drive flange of final drive. (Scheme 1) Reinstall joint in this position.
- Remove complete exhaust system. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M54). Remove heat shield.
- Release threaded ring (1) several turns with Special Tool (26 1 040). (Scheme 2)
- Unfasten screws. (Scheme 3)
- Unfasten screws. (Scheme 4)
- Push rear propeller shaft (1) forwards. (Scheme 5)
- Grip propeller shaft and release nuts. (Scheme 6) Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing (1). Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and remove downwards.
- Check centering. (Scheme 7) If necessary, replace damaged centering. Grease centering mount.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#propeller-shaft-removal-installation__torque-specifications). Tighten threaded ring with Special Tool (26 1 040) to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#propeller-shaft-removal-installation__torque-specifications).
