Sound Systems

  1. Standard
  2. BOSE

General Information

The radio systems are prepared for satellite radio use or Satellite Radio is installed.

The radio have two tuners with phase diversity and each one has an antenna connection (AM/FM1 and FM2).

Besides switching diversity, phase diversity is the second procedure for reducing reception interference.

At least two antennas with amplifier and a radio with two tuners is required.

If the signal received is interrupted, both signals are digitalized and separated in the tuners in the radio so that the disrupted signals are blocked out as much as possible.

If the reception signal is not disrupted, the radio constantly compares which antenna (amplifier) has the strongest reception. This is then transferred.

In this case, the second tuner checks the frequency band in the background for better reception frequencies for the selected station. If a better signal is found, this tuner switches to reception and the other to the background.

Satellite radio for SDARS is installed in luggage compartment.

Communication with other vehicle systems takes place via the Infotainment CAN-Bus and data bus on board diagnostic interface.

Symphony transport mode, activating/deactivating, refer to SYMPHONY TRANSPORT MODE, ACTIVATING/DEACTIVATING .

Troubleshooting and diagnosis takes place with Guided Fault Finding using vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.

RNS LOW NAVIGATION SYSTEM

Description

RNS low is the Low variant of the RNS-E.

The unit has MMI operation. A CD is used as the navigation CD.

In addition to the navigation system, RNS Low includes a radio/CD player and connection for a CD changer/external audio source connection and a cellular telephone. The CD drive can play music CDs.

Fault finding is performed via Guided Fault Finding.

Repairs on antenna wires, refer to General Information .

Repair to CAN bus lines, refer to General Information .

CD CHANGER

The CD changer is installed in the glove compartment as optional equipment.

It is connected via satellite radio.

Fault finding is performed using radio Guided Fault Finding in => . The wiring connection is checked. Malfunction messages result.

IPOD BASEPLATE

The iPod baseplate is installed in the glove compartment instead of the CD changer.

The iPod baseplate connected directly to the radio just like the CD changer.

It is connected via satellite radio.

Fault finding is performed using radio Guided Fault Finding in => . The wiring connection is checked. Malfunction messages result.

EXTERNAL AUDIO SOURCE CONNECTION

There are several versions of external audio source connections.

  1. AMI (Audi Music Interface) installed inside the glove compartment
  2. The AUX IN socket is installed in the center console storage compartment.

Either an AMI or AUX IN socket is installed.

Different external audio sources can be connected to the external audio source connection

  1. iPod
  2. MP3-Player
  3. USB Stick

Suitable adapter cables are needed. Refer to Owner's Manual.

Fault finding is performed via Guided Fault Finding. .

MULTIFUNCTION STEERING WHEEL

Description

Buttons are integrated in the steering wheel for easier operation of the radio, cellular telephone, navigation and CD changer.

With Tiptronic (automatic transmission), additional switches are installed.

The electronics integrated in the multi-function buttons take over signal processing from the Tiptronic buttons/switches and transfer signals via the LIN data bus (single wire bus) to the steering column electronic systems control module. The conversion to CAN BUS (comfort) takes place there.

The individual button blocks and the Tiptronic switch can be replaced separately.

Fault finding is performed via Guided Fault Finding. Refer to => .

STEERING COLUMN ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS CONTROL MODULE

Description

The steering column electronic systems control module is a part of the steering column switch module. The steering column switch module consists of

  1. Left and right steering column switch
  2. Airbag spiral spring
  3. Steering angle sensor
  4. Ignition/starter switch
  5. Steering column electronic systems control module

The steering column electronic systems control module exchanges data between vehicle control modules (e.g. vehicle electrical system control module) and steering column modules (e.g. steering column switch) and steering wheel modules (e.g. airbag).

In addition, multi-function steering wheel button signals are process and relayed via CAN BUS.

Fault finding is performed via Guided Fault Finding. Refer to => .

Steering column switch module, removing and installing, refer to [For transmission(s) 02E] [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CETA, CCTA, CEPB, CDMA] Description and Operation .

SATELLITE RADIO, ENABLING

When using for first time or when replacing satellite radio tuner, it must be enabled (activated) by the provider (XM or Sirius).

The subscription and application for activation can coincide with submission of all necessary data (US postal address, credit card number, radio ID (XM) or SID (Sirius)) to the provider's call center.

Only SIRIUS

SIRIUS sends the activation sequence 6 times within the first hour after apply for the activation. If no successful activation results, another activation sequence must be requested at the SIRIUS call center.

Requirements

  1. Customer has subscribed to XM or Sirius
  2. Satellite radio is installed and connected
  3. radio/navigation system with CD drive control module is adapted/coded accordingly
  4. Ignition switched on

Procedure

Switch on radio/navigation system with CD drive control module and select satellite radio reception range.

Attempt to receive free channels in XM (e.g. channel 1) or Sirius band (only channel 184).

Change location.

If free channels can be received clearly, the activation information sent by the provider (XM or Sirius) can also be received clearly.

A poor reception situation can prevent a successful activation even though activation information is being broadcast. In this case, vehicle location must be changed (an activation is also possible while vehicle is moving). There are e.g. workshops, garages, parking buildings, underground garages, fuel filling stations with extensive roofs and all other parking areas with signal shadows must be avoided.

SYMPHONY TRANSPORT MODE, ACTIVATING/DEACTIVATING

Transport mode must be activated before sending every symphony radio.

After activation, the internal CD changer drive is in transport position.

After replacing a symphony, transport mode must be deactivated after installation.

Transport mode, activating

symphony is connected and installed.

Press station buttons 3 and 5 and TONE button at the same time.

After about 5 seconds, TRANSPORT appears on the radio display.

Transport mode, deactivating

symphony is connected and installed.

Press CANCEL button.

TRANSPORT display goes out.

Transport mode is deactivated.
