SELECTOR MECHANISM AND IGNITION KEY WITHDRAWAL LOCK, CHECKING

Proceed as follows

  1. If selector lever is in S, D, R or Tiptronic position, starter cannot be operated.
  2. If vehicle is rolling faster than 5 km/h and selector lever is shifted to N, the selector lever lock solenoid must not engage and block selector lever. Selector lever can be shifted into driving gear.
  3. If vehicle is rolling at speeds less than 5 km/h (almost still) and selector lever is shifted to N, the selector lever lock solenoid may only engage after a second. The selector lever can only be shifted out of N when brake pedal is pressed.

The ignition key can be removed.

Selector lever out of P position, ignition switched off

The ignition key cannot be removed.

Selector lever in position P, button on selector lever pressed and ignition switched on

  1. Brake pedal not pressed

With button pressed, selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position P. Shift lock solenoid blocks selector lever.

  1. Brake pedal pressed

The selector lever lock solenoid releases selector lever, a driving gear can be engaged. Shift selector lever slowly through from P through R, N, D, S; while doing this check whether selector lever position in instrument cluster matches the selector lever position.

Selector lever in position n, button on selector lever pressed and ignition switched on

  1. Brake pedal not pressed

Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of N position. Shift lock solenoid blocks selector lever.

  1. Brake pedal pressed

The selector lever lock solenoid releases selector lever, a driving gear can be engaged.

Note. If the brake pedal is pressed, it is possible to shift from N to D without pressing button on selector lever. If shifting from N to R position is desired, selector lever button must also be pressed.

Selector lever in position D, ignition switched on

Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted from position D position to S.

  1. Push button on selector lever

The selector lever is released and can be shifted from D position to S.

Selector lever in D position, ignition and lights switched on

  1. Move selector lever into Tiptronic gate

The illumination of D symbol in selector lever display must go out, and + and - symbols must light up.

When shifting selector lever into Tiptronic gate, the Transmission Range (TR) Display in the instrument cluster must change from PRNDS to 654321.

  1. Shift selector lever in Tiptronic gate to + and

When shifting selector lever to + or -, the 654321 display in the instrument cluster must move up/down one gear (display changes).

If selector mechanism or ignition key withdrawal lock does not function as described, connect Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information SystemVAS 5051B.

Check DTC memory - complete system, if necessary, determine malfunction in guided fault finding and correct

SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING

Place selector lever in position P.

Loosen bolt -B-.

Shift selector shaft lever on transmission into P position.

Let locking lever in transmission engage in park lock wheel by moving vehicle forward until wheels lock.

To release selector lever cable tension, carefully move selector lever front and back slightly but do not shift into another selector lever position.

Tighten bolt -B-, selector lever cable position must not change.

Check selector lever cable adjustment .

Pull selector lever out of position P with button pressed approx. 5 mm toward rear and hold, do not shift into R.

Release selector lever.

  1. Selector lever must jump back into P position by itself.

Place selector lever in position N.

Pull selector lever out of position N with button pressed approx. 5 mm toward rear and hold, do not shift into D.

Release selector lever.

  1. Selector lever must jump back into N position by itself.

Press selector lever out of position N with button pressed approx. 5 mm toward front and hold, do not shift into R.

Release selector lever.

  1. Selector lever must jump back into N position by itself.

If selector lever does not react as described, repeat adjustment.

SELECTOR MECHANISM CONNECTORS, CHECKING

If selector mechanism malfunctions, proceed as follows

Connect Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing, and Information SystemVAS 5051B.

Check DTC memory - complete system, if necessary, determine malfunction in guided fault finding and correct.

A - 10-pin connector for connecting wires from selector mechanism to the transmission (with CAN-Bus lines)

Work procedure

Proceed as follows

Note. Observe general repair notes. Refer to REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS . Observe cleanliness rules when working on transmissions. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS . Follow notes in regard to Direct Shift (DSG) transmission 02E oil disposal regulations. Refer to TRANSMISSION . Only gear oil for Direct Shift (DSG) transmission 02E that is available as a replacement part may be used. Other oils can cause malfunctions or transmission failure.

WARNINGRisk of injury due to hot gear oil. Wear eye protection. Wear acid-resistant protective gloves. There is an accident risk if a gear is accidentally engaged while the engine is running! Shift selector lever into P position and engage parking brake before working with the engine running.
CAUTIONRisk of transmission damage. If there is only a little gear oil or none at all left in the transmission after a repair or after heavy oil leakage, engine must not be started. Pre-fill transmission with gear oil after a repair or after heavy oil leakage.
  1. Transmission not in emergency operation mode.
  2. Move vehicle onto a 4-column lifting platform or over a work pit so that it stands absolutely horizontal.
  3. Place selector lever in position P, engage parking brake.
  4. Engine idling.
  5. Air conditioning and heater switched off.

Read transmission fluid temperature

Note. The gear oil level changes with the gear oil temperature. Gear oil temperature that is too low leads to overfilling, too high a temperature leads to under filling. An incorrect gear oil level affects transmission function.

  1. The collected gear oil runs out of overflow tube -arrow 2-.

Note. Some gear oil always leaks out when opening the inspection plug -arrow 1-, regardless of the gear oil level.

Check whether overflow tube is securely installed in inspection plug hole.

Note. Gear oil level cannot be checked exactly if overflow tube is loose.

Note. Regardless of the gear oil level, a small wave of fluid comes out of the overflow tube every 30 seconds due to the multi-plate clutch cooling oil pulse. This procedure is irrelevant for checking gear oil level. Leaked gear oil must not be reused.

If gear oil level is OK, FINAL MEASURES .

Gear oil, filling
